I am quite hesitant to write this because the elderly couple who ran this seemed ‘nice’ BUT what we were served needs to be mentioned. In spite of the rave reviews and its number two dining spot in Beppu, we could not find any basis...to justify such a standing based on the meal we were served last night. It was a quiet and very wet Monday evening. When we arrived just a little after six, there were just three other diners at the sushi bar so they ushered the five of us into the adjacent empty dining room. It was understandable to be given the tourist menu which was limited in choices with pictures in English, Thai, Mandarin, Korean. The ‘sweet’ obachan took our order of the three sushi sets, one sashimi and the grilled fish. The sashimi arrived first and what a shock it was! Sitting there prominently were three slices of semi-frozen sake (salmon). Aside from the point that salmon is so rarely served in Japan because it is not indigenous - the fact that it had not been properly defrosted was abominable!!! That in itself was such a sacrilege and huge turn-off! In our opinion, NO sushi chef worth his salt would EVER do such a thing. The salmon appear again in the sushi sets. In addition, the maguro (tuna) was still bloody and the ika (squid) less than fresh. Strange too was the substitution of the amaebi (sweet shrimp) with an uncooked and not deveined ebi (shrimp). The grilled anago (conger eel) was pale and tasteless. Faring only slightly better was the ikura and hamachi. All this would never never happen in Osaka, Kyoto or Tokyo and while Beppu may not be regarded as a culinary destination, this kind of substandard fare should never happen for a restaurant rated so highly.More

This was a small family-run restaurant (granny was one of the waiters) and one of our most memorable dining experiences of the trip. There was one table each of aussie, french, english and welsh supporters. At one point we were all singing and the owners...of the restaurants were getting involved too. Traditional-style restaurant with everyone seated on the floor. We had the sushi and sashimi platters which were delicious and so fresh. We tried to go back the next day but they were shut unfortunately.More

Stopped in here a couple of times while over for the Rugby (Wales fan) Wonderful warm welcome - sitting on stools watching the chef's prepare the fish - it is all sashimi/sushi so only for fish lovers! The sashimi was magnificant - a good variety...of fish and tasted very fresh. Simple, unfussy but meticulous presentation. The sushi premium meal was also wonderful and particularly the conger eel - I have not enjoyed eel in the past but this was delicious. All washed down with some lovely cold sake. Great fun communicating with the restaurant team, who spoke enough English that we could understand each other. Definitely go if you are in Beppu and like fish.More

Went to Hajime last night after reading last review and were not disappointed. Beautiful nigiri platter with conger eel, quality maki and amazing sashimi. The place is a very simple sushi bar with 9 seats and small Japanese style restaurant. All food is prepared in...front of you and these guys are very good. The food, however good, was not the thing we will remember. When we left the restaurant one of the staff, maybe the owner, came out after us and stopped us to thank us for coming in Japanese with the warmest smile and multiple bows. Very moving and a fantastic end to our stay in Beppu. Just a note all signs outside are in Japanese so look at the picture on this site of the outside of the building, it is up a small alleyway.More

We were on our way back from a trip to Shikoku. The restaurant was hard to find because there were no signs to it and the kyacchi in front of the alley you had to pass through proved to be unhelpful but luckily we found...it anyway. The owners were a lovely couple, the sushi were very delicious and fresh with still hot freshly roasted anago and something even i havent eaten before, Tenshi-Ebi which wa also very delicious! After eating the owner even posed for a photo with us! Overall a very satisfying experience.More

I have had so much better sushis in other restaurants for less than half the price. The rice tastes like plain rice without vinegar, it was not especially tasty and for 7 pieces of sushi 2000 yen is very overpriced for this quality.

Went to Hajime Sushi for dinner and ordered the sushi platter. All I could say is WOW! The seafood is fresh! I guess that explains why the restaurant is packed and even the Japanese made reservations before coming. We were lucky to get seats. ❤️

Very little place compised by on the bar service and a separate table room. It's famili run and customers are japaneses. Choice is not so big and focuses on sushi, fresh and nice. A lively place with unique atmosphere with good food. Fish slices are...thick and in two: a 2 set of 7 sushi pieces, 3 tuna tekkamaki, 1 cucumber tekkamaki, 1 beer,1 sake together with miso it was 7340 yen, all sigle yen deserved.More
