I've never had a bad meal at John A Lau. Even my vegetarian husband likes eating here. Great atmosphere, great food, good service.

Wanted to REALLY like this place, but it is awkward. Not bad, just not WOW. Not many choices in Alpena, this is better than most chains.

I have eaten here several times, and each time it was well worth it. The meals were cooked and served with perfection, and the staff was helpful, friendly and alert. Being an historical landmark ads to the fine ambiance that one experiences while dining.

Great food, we loved it. We both had sandwiches and homemade chips and loved them. Would definitely go back! Portion size was much larger then expected too!

Through a series of events, we ended up at this restaurant and were so glad we did! We had the crab cheese dip appetizer with garlic bread and it was fantastic! I had the salmon and it was delicious...and quite a generous portion! The decor was a bit crazy, but appropriate for a saloon/bar-type atmosphere. The service was just fine.... More

The food was good but I think our server was new. She was very nice but it took her forever just to bring our Coke and tea to us. Then we put in an appetizer order at the same time we put in our food order and the app came out shortly before the food...it was just fried pickles and... More

There were four of us for dinner. We were all satisfied with our sandwiches and drinks. The history of the building was very interesting. My husband felt the waiter was a little odd but that was the way they were to represent themselves for the business. We chose this place for dinner because so many restaurants were closed on Mondays.... More

Between the three of us we had a soup in bread bowl, hamburger and a ruben sandwich. The sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their choices. Excellent Restaurant. Great beer selection.

Happened onto this place downtown Alpena. With it's bold, gold lettering and english pub looks, we thought it would be a great place for fish. The fish and chips were the best I've eaten in a long time, and best bang for the buck! A bit dusky and outdated decor, but cozy and private atmosphere. Pricey on the dinner menu... More
