This restaurant has just reopened after a complete refurbishment which has seen it expand into the next building and be completely remodelled to present a fresh modern look. One thing that hasn’t changed however is the quality of the food, which remains among the best...in the city.
Previously, this family run restaurant had limited space inside and felt a bit cramped and closed in, but by knocking through into the next building the restaurant is now almost twice its previous size and feels spacious without being cavernous. The interior has been redesigned by a smart team of local architects and is modern and classy, while the exposed stone walls remind you the building’s heritage (it was the former home of a famous Croatian writer)
The new, larger kitchen means they should cope easily with the extra tables the larger space provides.
As for the food, the menu has been tweaked, but most of the dishes the restaurant made its reputation on, such as the fish plate for two, still remain. One superb new addition is a starter of red mullet done three ways - a ceviche style marinaded fillet, a fried breaded fillet and a red mullet crisp. Pretty to look at and very tasty. There’s also a new dessert that I was dubious about at first but was glad we tried - dark chocolate mousse with a black garlic pearl and olive oil. Sounds weird but tastes great!
The wine list is also being revamped - we we had an excellent red from the island of Brač, just across the water from Split. Smooth, but with just a hint of tannin, it hit the spot for those who like a red wine with fish.
We’ve eaten at Konoba Marjan since the current owner’s parents opened it in 2004 and are pleased to see the quality of food and service carrying through to its new, more modern, space.More
