Go early evening when HK is relaxing after work. Great atmosphere, classic cocktails, beer in pewter tankards, and classy resident band. Excellent service from staff, try to get a seat at the bar.

Beer served from a frosty pewter mug with impeccable service! It doesn't get much better. Live jazz in the evening and a great buzz throughout!

Attentive, polite service, cool pewter mugs with good British wallop. Great bar food (sliders, bar snacks or something more substantial). Live music and a bustle of international accents and laughter. A favourite spot of mine even if I don't stay at the Mandarin hotel (which is a great hotel to stay at by the way!).

Unchanging venue and patrons, ever increasingly silly prices. Especially for ridiculously named (mock)cocktails. No idea who drinks this nonsense. If you want to NOT have the details of your latest investment banking deal come out, make sure you avoid: it's wall to wall bankers in there 5-7PM. Mind you, impossible to hear anything once the band gets going - in... More

The Captains Bar was ever rarely empty or dead...unlike most hotel bars you visit on a Monday or Tuesday early doors this place was lively and full of joie de vivre - we found it irrestible most evenings!

Consistently good service Always a good old fashion served in a tumbler and Pewter mugs for a gunner. It's always been like this, and the decor seems as unchanging as the waiters. Now that's a very good thing. It's a comforting level of discrete service, which is always exceptional. Never disappointing - I would recommend lunch - great curry. I'd... More

One of hong kong's finest. It is just steeped in history. Many a great night has started or ended here. Must have an "old fashioned", or a pint from a silver tankard or a traditional gunner for the non-partakers. A must do for visitors or hardened locals.

One of few ultimate places to hand out after duty. Came her today at afternoon, had my beer and relax in this decent and rather quiet atmosphere. Service is outstanding top. Just love this place.

We had a few late beers here - we had been told it was worth a visit so made sure we did. The whole layout, atmosphere and service was a unique experience and it seemed that nothing had changed in the last 80 years - a great evening!

Classic Far Eastern hotel bar with lots of history. If you are familiar with or interested in the history of Hong Kong and of Asia's economic rise then you will very much appreciate this establishment.

Keeping Hong Kong entertained for over 50 years, Captain’s Bar is a city institution. Popular with both guests and locals alike, it has been Hong Kong’s favourite after-work watering hole for decades.

Enjoying a relaxed, cosy decor with red, wood and brass furnishings, Captain’s Bar exudes comfortable, classic style. Famous for nightly jazz performances and for serving draught beer in silver tankards—regulars receive their own engraved with their name—it’s the kind of place you stop by for a drink and stay all night.

Guests in comfortable attire are welcomed throughout the day. After 5pm, ladies are kindly asked to wear elegant attire and proper footwear. Gentlemen are kindly asked to wear closed shoes at all times with smart shirt and long trousers after 5pm.

Staying in Central

Neighbourhood Profile
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.
