We arrived at Ulaanbaatar late at night and were looking for a place to eat and chill, after a long ride on the Transmongolian Express. This pub was all we wished for and more. Serving food till late at night, big menu to choose from....Good friendly vibe and different kinds of sports playing on the TV's. A home away from home!
Would definitely recommend for a meal or drink with friends. Just off Genghis Khan Square.More
I visited the Grand Khaan Irish Pub twice during a recent visit to UB. The first visit, I had a truly fantastic steak, so naturally I ordered the same on the return visit. It turned out to be one of the worst steaks I've ever...tried to eat anywhere in the world! Tough and tasteless, with lots of fat and gristle. Also poorly cooked. What a disappointment! Service in the Irish Pub also seems to be going downhill. Time to look for better alternatives for steak dinner in UB.More
Grand Khaan is a pleasant pub/restaurant centrally located and easy to find. You can enjoy just a drink or you can have lunch or dinner. It is not a cosy English type pub, but a large area with tables and chairs with the bar at...the back, where you can sit and have a drink. The three times we have visited, there seem to be a mix of local and expat clientele.
The menu is quite varied, with salads, pasta, steaks, etc - both local and international dishes. They have are various beers and better choice of wine than some other places we have visited. The food we have ordered has been quite good - for example last time we went we had German sausage with sauerkraut and potatoes, and wiener schnitzel - maybe not as good as you would get in Germany or Austria, but tasty and perfectly acceptable considering this is UB. The food total (with tax, without drinks) was about 30,000 MNT - less than $12 - so we thought reasonable for somewhere in the very centre of the city.
Decor is tasteful (leather type chairs) and they have screens simultaneously showing different sports. There is an outside terrace which was still being used on a sunny lunch time late September. Staff are friendly and polite and speak some English. Service is fairly prompt. There is a small stage area with drum kit and mike set up, so I guess they must have live music there sometimes.
This is definitely a place we will visit from time to time.More
