This restaurant has cuisine history dated back to the 1950's (when Thailand adopted Western architectural style). It has an elegant dining room, live piano, female vocalist and the view of Democracy monument. Perceived among the Thais to be upscale with authentic royalty style dishes. We were there recently and were pleased with the food and services. We tried Pomelo salad,... More

Were delivered here by a tour. The waiters are dressed as naval officers. The pianist played and the singer sang throughout lunch. The food was uneventful and quite bland. I gave this an extra point for ambiance but I should take it back for having an officer looking over my shoulder the whole time to take my plate the moment... More

We had lunch after visiting Anata Samakhom. I liked fish soup and shrimp dish. My wife liked spicy fish. The services were ok. The views were good.

Not a bad restaurant overall, but it lacks in "Thainess" - the decor and feel of the place is quite European. Feels a bit too fussy for regular tourists, but it might be nice for someone on a special date or occasion. Food is good, but expensive relative to the same quality provided by other establishments.

We went there for a lunch during our Bangkok tour. The restaurant is classy and charming. They have a live music performance of Thai and western songs (mainly swing) and these were great. We felt there so good and relaxed. The waiters in marine uniforms are very friendly and they speak some English. The food was very good (including vegetarian... More

We , two families, stopped by for lunch as we were staying at their sister Hotel next door. A lot of Retro charm with a crooner on the mike with Thai songs and waiters in tacky "marine" uniforms. The food was actually good , but the portions were small and not very filling. The USP seems to be their history (Claim... More

Not an expensive hotel, clean, with coffee, tea and water in the room. Breakfast a little expensive for the offer but you don't have to take it. Great location close to temples and other tourist roads

Went there for lunch as we waited to see the guided tour of the Rattanakosin Hall museum If I had not been in the company of a very knowledgeable guide I would had never found it. The place is old school elegant but yet modern in bright colors. We sat overlooking the round about and got a feel for the... More

I like Methavalai. I have been coming here for years after being introduced by an old Thai friend. This is absolutely retro Thailand. Walk into Methavalai and you are stepping back 50 years. The decor, the live music, the service, ist all 1960's. Love it. The food is consistently good, but the serves are small and the taste quite subdued.... More

Staying in Banglamphu

Neighbourhood Profile
Banglamphu
While you’ll see skyscrapers in most parts of Bangkok, it’s the gilded roofs of ancient pagodas that adorn the skyline of Banglamphu, the city’s historical and most touristic district. Hordes of tourists flock to this area to tick quite a few must-see attractions off their to-do list, with the Grand Palace being the most spectacular of them all. Banglamphu is also home to Bangkok’s infamous tourist ghetto, centered around Khao San Road. Visit at night to feast on road-side pad thai, cheap beers and if you’re up for it, some dancing fueled by buckets of Thai whiskey.
