In his excellent book, "The Glass Wall - Lives on the Baltic Frontier", Max Egremont writes about being "in an art pub near Independence Square [in Tallinn]". He continues... "We [then] go to a small bar that dates from Soviet times, with no purpose or...decoration except for drinking and talking, although voices are low, as if on the edge of silence; a sweating barman rushes between customers in heat that's stifling after the cold street, and it takes time to get our Estonian liquor." Although he doesn't say so, I believe Max Egremont is referring to Valli Bar. An Estonian friend told me of this bar about fifteen years ago. I've been to Valli Bar every year since, most recently in September 2021. On that occasion, I asked the barman for the bar's Wi-Fi password. He replied "We don't have one, we expect the customers to talk to each other!" Occasionally, a man plays Estonian music, on an accordion, sitting by the window. Visit Valli Bar before it's destroyed by tourism or so-called development. That suggestion is also for Max Egremont if, in fact, I'm mistaken and he was not referring to Valli Bar in his book.More
