U Bulinu is a really charming traditional restaurant a little south of the main area of Prague that most tourists frequent. The interior is whimsical and uses a host of authentic details to create real atmosphere. For example, the electrical box behind the bar appears...to have come from the turn of the last century and was described by the bartender as “steam punk” but it merges seamlessly with old tile work, deeply seasoned wood, and multiple whimsical touches to create a really unique feel that is simultaneously an ode to tradition and a riff on what it can be. There is a hilarious backstory available that tells the “saga” of the restaurant. A quiet and welcoming garden is also available.
If U Bulinu only offered atmosphere, I would not be writing such an effusive review. Our hearty lunch meals included a rich, beer based stew, a chicken paprika dish, a well-made beef soup with crispy noodles, little “quiche” on salad, and brussel sprouts and new potatoes. All were flavorful, expertly prepared, and attractively plated.
As noted, the bar tender was extremely friendly, patrons were interacting, and there was a convivial spirit. Prices are very appropriate, especially for the lunch specials. Well worth the walk, with the chance to get off the beaten path.More
