U Hrocha (the Hippopotamus) is definitely a locals-only pub whose owner was kind enough to serve two Amercans who stumbled in during a cold, rainy day. Small place with LOTS of character and LOTS of characters...and it's obvious, they want to keep it that way....If you're kind and pay cash only, they might even offer you a seat. Beer is great, company is great, and I'll be back next time I'm in Prague! Thank you for your hospitality!More

If you want to experience a real authentic pub then a visit to U Hrocha is just the ticket. I been going to U Hrocha ( At The Hippopotamus) for years ,its never changed, its only a small pub, interior is basically one room, a...cool looking serving bar dominates the main room, minimalist decor and furnishings and seating options, it's a wonderful unpretentious pub, that's always a joy to visit. My twin brother and I were here on a Saturday afternoon, pub was busy with a great atmosphere, we luckily managed to get seats at the serving bar, no need to check the beer range its only beers from Pilsner Urquell Brewery, these were served in excellent condition being iced cold and sparkling and with the distinctive foamy head so characteristic of the way Czech beer is poured, we chilled out and soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular locals pub. A big fan of this most famous of Czech beers, its a golden, light and hoppy lager style beer bursting with taste and very easy to drink especially when served freezing cold as in this pub ,its hardly surprising that this pub is so popular with beers served in this good a condition. We both really enjoyed our beers in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to U Hrocha we had a great time. U Hrocha is easy to locate along Thunovska in the Lesser Town ( Mala Strana) district of Prague. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, midday till 11pm. Well worth checking out if you're in the area.More

U Hrocha (The Hippopotamus) is a brilliant local pub on Thunovská that in my opinion offers the best Pilsner Urquell beer in Malá Strana if not the whole of Prague. This is an excellent pub thats located in the superbly atmospheric cobbled back-streets of Malá Strana...and what a pub it is. It's not a fancy pub it's a pub thats got one of the best interiors you will see in this part of Prague. With a two-roomed interior'thats got thick white-washed walls and a vaulted ceiling with heavy wooden furniture and an excellent little bar area. This brilliant pub is very popular and its full from when it opens up at midday to when it closes. We have visited here lot's of time's over the year's and it never change's which is good as it's beer is superb as are there fantastic range of beer snacks. We visited early on in the afternoon and as usual it was bursting at the seams in here.We were very lucky as there was room by the bar when we visited here and we stood there and had a couple of pints of Pilsner Urquell beers which were perfectly served and superb and were well priced considering were we where and the area the pub is located in. U Hrocha is in my opinion a must go pub in a superb area thats very atmospheric and a proper local pub with bag's of character and well worth visiting and very easy to get to from Malostranské Náměsti tram stop its a short walk.(This is my second review of U Hrocha). I’ve been here four times now, twice in three days but before that every 11 years or so. It’s certainly an experience; it’s supposed to open at 12 but if you turn up at five past it’s already full and it’s pot luck if you...get a place or not. They seem to only have three employees that you ever see. One is an old bloke who does nothing. One looks like Fish from Marillion, and he just pours the drinks and points at things. One looks like the clock guy from the Repair Shop on the BBC, he literally does all the work. He just doesn’t stop. It’s probably the most ‘locally’ place you’ve ever seen, there’s always places reserved although I can’t work out how you do that. I’d love to be a local, but I’m English and it’d never work. Today there was a bloke dressed up like St George for some reason at midday that I couldn’t work out, just on a random December lunchtime. Otherwise it was just another Sunday and rammed at 12pm. It’s absolutely mad and one of my most favourite places in the world. You just have to go with it; have some pork knee or sausage and keep the Urquell coming. Just don’t forget to put your beer mat in top of your glass when you’ve had enough. Five stars as ever, Christ knows what the Tripadvisor warning is about.More

I really love this place. My first visit was back in 2013 and it’a taken me 10 years to find my way back! Don’t expect a friendly bar man and do expect to be seated on a table full of hairy-arsed locals if it’s busy....It’s not geared up for tourists and if they don’t like they look if you then you won’t get a beer. If you’re feel brave then go with the flow and stick it out. The atmosphere is great and the beer is even better.More

A really good place to have a beer or eat something, they are very traditional and also very friendly with tourists, so when you visit the castle you just have to stop here for a beer. Remember, it's a cash only place, bring all your...group and enjoy.More

Walking down the hill from the castle to look at the British Embassy. (Nice statue of Churchill). Went round the corner & spotted this pub early afternoon so not to busy. What a find… Beer fantastic served traditional Czech way & very reasonably priced. Pilsner...Urquell Mrs T had local white wine which she enjoyed. Interesting food menu. Had the beer cheese with bread. Perfect. The lady who served us was very nice & spoke English. Highly recommend this friendly local pub.More

U Hrocha ( At The Hippopotomus ) is a wonderful and unspoilt pub in the Castle Quarter that's always a joy to visit . Make no mistake this is a locals pub ,it's quite small but full of character ,a cool looking serving bar ,pubby...decor and furnishings ,seating options ,it's got an ancient feel to it ,been here many many times ,vibe is always good ,as stated it's a locals pub ,it's a pub that doesn't rely on the tourist trade ,service can seem a bit gruff but I think that's just the way it is in here ,let's just say that staff here are not noted for their warmth and hospitality ,doesn't excuse their behaviour ,it's just the way it is ,anyway you're not there to be their friends you're there for the beer or a simple meal or both . My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Wednesday afternoon ,we ordered at the bar ,we actually sat by the serving bar ,no need to check the beer range as it's beers from Pilsner Urquell Brewery ,served iced cold and sparkling and with the big foamy head so beloved by the Czech's ,we chilled out and planned out the day ahead while sipping our beers. A big fan of this beer ,light, hoppy and very easy to drink ,when this beer is served freezing cold as in this pub it's such a delicious beer indeed. We really enjoyed our beers in here and the unique vibe so much so that we stayed for another beer each before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time. U Hrocha is easy to locate along Thurnovska. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, midday till 11pm. A wonderful and authentic Czech pub that's well worth seeking out if you're in the lesser Town or Castle Quarter .More

An excellent pub with a real local feel and delicious beer. It's tiny and busy and noisy and fun. Everything you'd want from your local dive bar. And decent food,a s well. But really, I enjoyed the beer and the atmosphere. My daughter (11) felt...a little out of place, but she was absolutely welcomed. It's location is great after visiting the castle. Stay off the main streets and see where the locals gather. Truly authentic and a good time.More

U Hrocha ( At The Hippopotomus ) is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most authentic pubs in this part of town,a pub I've been visiting for close to 30 years . I love the look of this pub ,interior is basic...,a small serving bar ,walls are mostly bare bar for a few beer enamels and a few ornate hippo statues and toys and there's not that much in the way of seating but this all adds to the charm of this pub . My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Saturday afternoon ,no need to check out the beers on offer as it's only beers from the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, these were poured immediately ,two pencil ticks on our piece of paper and we were away ,enjoying this fine beer . Pilsner Urquell beer is such a light, hoppy and unpretentious beer ,when served in pristine condition as in U Hrocka it's such a refreshing brew,it was just so good being in such a lovely pub enjoying a freezing cold beer and soaking up the great vibe in this busy and popular pub,I've noticed a few recent reviews about tourists not getting served in here,I'm not doubting their accounts of their visit but would it not make more sense to get here earlier as opposed to after 10pm to enjoy your first beer of the day, personally I've never saw this occur in here and I've been here 100's of times,to me it's just a no frills pub serving the best Pilsner Urquell in Prague. We stayed here for two beers each before we moved on and as on previous visits to here we had a great beer experience . U Hrocha is quite easy to locate along Thurnovska ,it's very close to the famous Winston Churchill Bust . Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, midday till 11pm. Well worth checking out if you're in the area.More

U Hrocha (The Hippopotamus) is without a doubt one of the best pubs in Malá Strana and has stood the test of time.U Hrocha is a true Prague classic and we have been to this pub many times while visiting Prague. U Hrocha is not...an upmarket pub were you get upmarket food or a selection of drink's from craft brewerie's its just a local pub on a superb cobbled street called Thunovská who serve simple czech cuisine and Pilsner Urquell brewery beers. U Hrocha is classic Old World Prague with white washed interior with a arched ceiling and many interesting fixtures that relate to this area of Prague and of course the pubs emblem the Hippo. With dark wooden furniture and great light features throughout the interior'U Hrocha has a medieval look and feel and no trip to Prague would be complete without a night out in U Hrocha. When we visited this place was as alway's packed and I'am surprised we got in here but we did. They serve one type of beer in here and its served in perfect condition the beer which is served is Pilsner Urquell brewery beer an excellent Czech beer. When here we had a few pints which where superb and very well priced. U Hrocha is in my opinion a pub that is well worth a visit and a must go destination pub for anyone who has an interest in really old pubs with bags of character.Easy to get to from Malostranské Náměsti tram stop it's a short walk. (This is my first review of U Hrocha). Opening Hours. Monday-Sunday-12.00-23.30. Public Transport. Bus Stop. Malostranské Náměsti. Tram Stop. Malostranské Náměsti.More

It is very small and offers little in the way of food. It is popular with locals and serves only the famous Pilsner Urquell beer at a ridiculously inexpensive price.
