Hostinec U Matěje Kotrby in Nové Město is a brilliant hostinec that offer a really good range of Czech meals and a superb range of well priced drinks.
Located in Křemencova'this hostinec offer well priced meals in a superb environment with friendly staff. The inside has a brilliant music themed interior with superb seating options throughout the whole interior.
We had just visited U Fleků and decided to have a meal in this excellent hostinec.Very lively when we visited but we didn't have a problem in finding a table. When we visited we had a fantastic Czech meal and beer's which were excellent and well priced.
Hostinec U Matěje Kotrby is worth going to and very easy to find from Národní Divadlo tram stop it's a short walk..(This is my first review of Hostinec U Matěje Kotrby).

I love nothing better than wandering around the Old Town streets, taking in the great architecture and dropping into the fantastic traditional pubs that proliferate the Old Town, one pub that we dropped into is an old favourite of ours namely Hostinec U Mateje Kotrby .
This is a traditional pub ,interior is superb ,dark wood features ,eclectic decor and furnishings ,a solid wood serving bar and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub,all in all it's a great pub to unwind in.
We were here on a Friday afternoon ,pub was busy with a great atmosphere ,we ordered beers from Pilsner Urquell Brewery ,these were served in excellent condition being iced gold and sparkling and with the distinctive foamy head so characteristic of the way Czech beers are poured and served, for a meal we chose pork in breadcrumbs with mashed potatoes and salad, this meal appeared in no time at all and was absolutely delicious .
My meal was superb, pork in breadcrumbs is as a traditional meal you will taste in this wonderful city,so tasty,so filling and coupled with our delicious beers made for a great dining experience .
We really enjoyed our meal and beers in here before we moved on and as on every previous visit to here we had a great time.
Hostinec U Mateje Kotrby is easy to locate along Kremencova .
Opening hours are;
Monday to Sunday, open from 11.30am till very late .
Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

The service was mixed, everything seemed very hectic, some of the waiters didn't speak any English. Thirty minutes after eating our burgers we got stomach cramps and the mayonnaise we ordered came as tartar sauce. We had to pay standing at the till like at a snack bar - why, when you can also get food and drink at your table? We won't be coming back.

Working nearby, I have occasionally had the lunchtime menu here, which was always pretty good. But I was embarrassed to have brought my friends there for dinner.
The location worked for us, but the alarm bells should have started to ring when we asked for a reservation for 8 pm and were told that we could only be there for 1 hour...which they miraculously solved when we said no. Of course they didn't really have any bookings coming in at 9 pm.
Service was appalling. Our group consisted of Czechs and long-term residents so this is not a case of not being used to Czech ways. Wait staff took beer orders and didn't ask those who didn't want beer what they would like. 3 of them and none capable or caring enough about the basics. We were practically having to rugby tackle the waitress who was more obsessed with clearing a table (which was not required for waiting guests) than in offering drinks.
Rudeness to one of our party who had to go to the bar to finally order her drink. Condescending staff and a refusal to split the bill to allow us to pay individually by card. I have seen (subsequently) on Czech reviews the owner apologizing and saying the staff were all 'brigadnici' (trainees), but this doesn't seem to be fixed.
The wait staff seemed to have been hired as pretty blondes, but they are the reason I can't recommend this restaurant. They are letting the kitchen staff down as the food was pretty good, though price wise, there is better for cheaper in this area so only go here if passing during the poledni (lunchtime) menu period.

This place is a rip off charging the double than the menu online and the one that we had been given. The hotel nearby gave us a 10% discount and they charged us almost the double. The most ridiculous Caesar salad with a chicken tasting like a grilled plastic bag. Just ridiculous! Long story short don’t take Under consideration discounts from hotels that it’s not even valid is a trick to send them tourists, their English is poor as in hospitality you would expect better service and welcoming staff! Nice environment but this is not enough! We would prefer to eat street food instead of this despite of the prices charged! Faulty marketing and misleading prices that proves that this place is a rip off and robery! They take the menu from you so if you want to come back to them there is gonna be a fuss and argue over another menu that they have the overpriced dishes! 10% tip for the service which is not worth it! They are sneaky and not even worth visiting! Nothing special. Guys have a nice meal in reasonable prices at Pork’s and try the pork knuckles and the cabbage salad, generous portions and good prices!

U Matěje Kotrby, a name I hope to be able to pronounce someday, is a great restaurant in Nove Mesto. They accommodated the two of us at 8 pm when I called at 7:30 and had no reservation. When we arrived, they were quite busy--all tables were full, and the staff was hustling. We were seated promptly and the server answered our questions.
The decor is funky old stuff and nostalgia, including old musical intruments (even an accordion), religious items, and appliances. The music is 60s and 70s hits. That, along with the energy of the crowd, made it fun.
The menu is fairly limited, but they have a selection of different beef and pork steaks that fill it out.
We got the pig's ear appetizer despite our never having had anything like that. It was really quite tasty, if a bit salty.
The complimentary homemade bread that was served in a small loaf with a knife that was not nearly sharp enough to cut it. But with some strength, I managed to cut some slices. It was a tasty dark bread. It was served at room temperature, which would have been fine except for the freezing cold butter. It was also served with a mound of green coarse salt.
My wife got the marinated beef neck with bacon dumplings. The beef was a bit dry and needed salt. The dumplings were terrific.
I ordered the sous vide pig's knee, which I had never had. (This is called pig's knuckle in most countries.) It was exquisite, even without the condiments of mustard and horseradish.
We splurged for dessert, much more than we could eat. We got the buchty filled with plum, which was divine. The dough was light and yeasty and not too sweet. The dark plum filling was tart and not overly sweet.
We also got a second dessert, which was a berry-filled dumpling with a creamy sauce. Again it was a great combination of tart and slightly sweet. I recommend it.
They also had several different beers, not just PIlsner Urquell. I tried the Master, which is a terrific dark beer.
Overall I recommend U Matěje Kotrby. Even if you can't pronounce it, you will enjoy it!

Lovely Czech meal, friendly atmosphere and great service. Relaxed and quirky interior. Food served quickly, a mixed cheese starter, mains and a drink came to under £20 each.

The restaurant was across the road from our hotel & we got a 10% discount voucher from the hotel.
We both had burger & chips & I was recommended the Urquell lager which was excellent.
We returned for a second visit on our last night so it must have been good.

My daughter ordered a chicken Caeser Salad and the majority of the chicken was pink. The waiter advised they boil the chicken and it SHOULD be ok. Not worth the chance ( 425 kc). Not a great explanation and no offer to rectify. Burger & Fries were good (372 KC) and a good price on Plzen beer (39kc for .5l) . But the pink chicken was a deal breaker. Would not recommend this restaraunt.

Awesome Restaurant with a lovely menu to cater for all tastes. Service was friendly and professional, prices were very reasonable and the food was fantastic! Highly recommend the pork knuckle 👌
The small bar next door was our favourite across all bars we visited in Prague, barman Leo was fantastic, served us up some great cocktails and took time to chat to us about local culture etc
Would be my first stop on a return visit to Prague!

We were suggested this restaurant by our host at the hotel.
Tereza and Petr were very kind, Petr also suggested us a very nice alternative to goulash that was unfortunately not availble when we had lunch there.
We would recommend for meat quality and kindness.

We came on 12/30/2023 since the hotel we were in gave us an 8% discount to take advantage of, and we had also read affordable prices in the reviews. Well, nothing could be more different but perhaps we should have already become suspicious of the fact that the prices were not displayed outside. The two of us spent 46 euros for 1 dish each (1 goulash and 1 sirloin, the portions of which were ridiculous) and 1 beer each. Also nice is the story of the obligatory 10% tip which cancels out the 8% hotel discount. Just walk further towards the center to spend the right amount and eat a little more. Rejected!

Hello, we visited your restaurant as an international company - Munich, New York, Lviv. In addition to being tasty and pleasant, the great service in the person of Petra & Martin helped us communicate in all languages - English, German and Ukrainian and choose everything we liked. We were pleasantly surprised by their attentiveness and professionalism - unfortunately, you won't find such great service in restaurants everywhere in Prague. Kudos and gratitude to you!!

The service was pleasant, Maruska and Jarda were kind, however the prices were really excessive for each dish.
I would have liked to order a caesar salad but it cost around 20 euros, more than 400 crowns. In many other restaurants we have always found prices to be reasonable if not extremely cheap.
A bit disappointing experience.

Nearly 700 hundred metres long, Wenceslas Square represents the most frequent and buzzing crossroads of the city. When tired or broke, you can explore the city's underpasses, which can take you to the Old Town or to the courtyards of art nouveau houses with secret gems of greenery, white benches and rose bushes that provide unexpected peace in the midst of the city.
