This pub was our local until we moved to Brighton almost a year ago. We have missed the Kentish pub ambience, the food and the beers so we thought we would come back and see if it is still as good as we remember. The restaurant was full so there was a great atmosphere. There was a 15 minute delay... More

Had an awful lunch experience here! Ordered Ham ,Chips and salad and this is what I got.... fairy ham, half a dozen chunky chips (one was black) and a handful of lettuce from a bag! This delight would have cost me £12.95 ! There is no GF choice, the coffee was chilled at best, the decor was shabby , needless... More

Dear Anna M. We are not generally in the habit of replying to reviews but cannot let this little nonsense pass unchallenged. We recommend anyone with any special dietary requirements to ring ahead and discuss their needs. Unfortunately you did not - which is your choice but it is then disingenuous to complain about a lack of choice. I could... More

Eaten here several times. The food has always been excellent and the vegetarian options are extremely good. Only downside is that when we booked a table for 2pm we got our mains at 4pm. Excellent chef, good menu, great atmosphere.

We had a lovely lunch to celebrate my sister's special birthday. Gemma and Rob were so helpful in accommodating our various dietary issues!

How difficult can it be? Saturday night dinner for four, large part of the menu unavailable, and an hour before we got what they did have. This with only 3 occupied tables. By the time it came, would happily have gone without. Food was heavy, rich, nothing to write home about. I don't like to be negative, but these people... More

We had Sunday lunch here today (26/2/17)and received a card inviting a TA review, so here it is. Annoyingly,a nd in a very patronising manner, they expect you to arrive 15 minutes before placing your order. They make a bit of a song and dance about it if you arrive early. We ordered 3 roast beef lunches - very standard... More

Wonderful homemade bread and pate brought to the table while we waited for our starters. Food was delicious and well cooked. Special thanks to Rob for going out of his way to make sure our party of nine had exactly what they wanted after we had accidentally preordered from the wrong menu. A great evening and thoroughly recommend it.

A truly welcoming venue - amazing food, great atmosphere and Gemma was very welcoming and informative. A hidden treasure which we will be visiting regularly now that we have found it! The food was incredible in taste, presentation and quantity. We will be recommending it to all family and friends.

The Wheelwrights Arms at Matfield is a traditional Kentish weatherboard pub. Built in 1602 as a farm building, the pub has been privately run by Rob & Gem Marshall since May 2011. We have up to 6 cask ales available on draught featuring local favourites & craft beers, together with a varied selection of good wines generally under £25 a bottle, with several options by the glass. We keep a small, frequently changing menu, prepared from fresh ingredients which we serve at lunch & dinner times, & traditional roasts on Sundays. At lunch we also offer sandwiches made from our own bread and butter churned in our own kitchen. We've sometimes been called a gastro pub, and if we are then we insist it is as much about the pub as it is the gastro. Drop in - you won't be a stranger for long.
