At first glance The Poet looks rather unremarkable. A pub on the crossroads of Matfield and Brenchley with, it has to said, rather limited parking if you want to be right by the front door, and not necessarily looking like it's beckoning you in! It's a bit like 'if you do, you do, if you don't, you don't'! However, if... More

I have written about The Poet before but I think that it's changed hands and it's been a while. I took a group of 14 to lunch and we were given a private area next to a welcoming wood burning fire ( there was snow outside). We had been asked to pre-select from a limited menu but everyone seemed happy... More

Our meal at The Poet for my Mum's 60th couldn't have been better! The food was absolutely brilliant - and ahead of the meal we had even been slightly worried that the party menu for large groups was perhaps a little limited - it certainly didn't matter one bit! Every single course was fantastic - right down to the coffee's... More

In the beautiful village of Matfield you will find the Poet, once a pub it is a now warm, welcoming restaurant. The interior is authentic olde worlde with some lovely original features. There is alway a good choice of Gin at the bar, if it is your tipple. We have dined here many times, sometimes for lunch from the set... More

We went there for the first time on recommendation and exceeded all expectations. We've lived in Kent for the best part of 25 years and this is the best restaurant we have been to in that time. I have been living and working in South Africa for the past 3 years and we happened to be talking about SA; Petrus... More

...good in parts. We were 4 adults and two adolescents. All adults were v happy with the starters, one was happy with her main course, two were not terribly impressed and one was seriously disappointed, it would be tedious to delve into details. This was lunchtime and not particularly over-busy. What a disappointment overall. Service was good, the ambience was super.i... More

Been meaning to go to The Poet for ages, and with a childfree night over Christmas made a reservation. Immediate thoughts were impressive but were quickly undone by one of the staff being rude and abrupt, spending most of her time complaining she was working over Christmas and couldn't seem to make eye contact. We were shown to our table... More

This is a great pub and is a real asset to the quaint Kent village of Matfield. Always a warm welcome, a fantastic range of beers, wines, gins etc. The food is delicious and I think it must be the best place I've eaten a Sunday roast out. Great service, great food, great pub!
