We stayed a week in this small town north of Helsinki and wanted to eat something typical. So, asking local people, we decided to give this restaurant a try. From the outside it looks like a very elegant and high level place, the interiors are...also well furnished and classy. The kitchen is open to view and the staff very friendly. I ordered reindeer a la carte with a red wine sauce and a side of seasonal vegetables. The beef was really good, very similar to our beef stew. Very tender that fell off the bone on its own. If we really have to find a fault with this place (but it is something that many classy restaurants have in common) it is that the portions were slightly small. For the rest, a place that I absolutely recommend to try.More

Visited this restaurant with friends. Gingerbread house sounds really nice and we had heard it's the best restaurant in town. Place had nothing to do with gingerbread or quality!! It was only expensive. I gave feedback to the waiter. Her reaction was "aha, ok". Avoid...this place!More

We all had different meals and couldn't have been happier! Loved everything about it, especially the tartar and petit filet. The staff were attentive and looked after us well.

We visited the city of Hämeenlinna and on came the radio a song about the gingerbread man.. Over to TripAdvisor and the top rated restaurant was the gingerbread building.. Perhaps, this was meant to be? Situated in the centre, parking was a bit difficult to...find, but we made a reservation for an early time, only to be placed next to another table in the empty restaurant. So much for spreading the tables to avoid social distancing. On the reservation, I wrote the dietary requirements a few hours before the opening time. When we arrived, they said they only just saw it... This was a sign that the staff do not really look at the booking details and doesn't warrant the quality that other reviewers have noted. Anyway, fortunately, the menu dish was suitable as long as the sauce for the dish was made up without garlic. This meant the chefs only needed to mash up some bland cashews to accompany to grilled cauliflower. The cauliflower was disappointing, yet there were no waitresses nearby to raise this once the food came out... Rather, they arrived after the food was almost finished, but rather interrupted us at the table than to get into a conversation. Anyways, for 24Eur, i would expect the cauliflower to be a large one, like a steak, that is well cooked, and not pieces it the ones you get from a frozen pack! The grilled vegetables also were a bit too burnt, and went served was only luke warm, rather than piping hot. The other dish was, so they have a problem with keeping the food hot on the foyer, and the wait was too long. It was disappointing, to say the least, and it is certainly over priced given the lack of quality in the food, chef experience, and service. The dessert was ok, with the creme brulee being thin, so to be sure it cooks properly, and Ice cream pleasant, but nothing amazing. The table setting was for four people, but we only had three, yet, they never took away the fourth setting. Another example of poor service, and this is certainly an overrated place... Needing much improvement to justify its claim to be the top restaurant in the city. It has the potential given the building, but if its certainly has a poor rating right now.More

The starter, beef tartar was ok, not splendid but eatable. The main, charcoal grilled chicken was poor, I have to say bad. It was only cooked, skin was awful. Not crispy as it should be when grilled.

Fantastic octopus from Josper grill. Great snails with blue cheese, and delicious gingerbread ice cream for dessert. Friendly, professional service. Reasonably fast despite the fact that it was a busy evening. Compared to Helsinki prices, good value for money. Thank you very much!

When having a couple of hours time to visit Hameenlinna, old town in Tawast area I walked around to look for suitable restaurant, before driving into surroundings area into hotel. I found this old wooden building which was told to have been a normal living...house. On the other hand just realize that exactly in same address have been living famous Finnish artist, Albert Edefelt (from 1855..) which was told in placate. Also this building have a lively music cellar in ground floor. But this house, called Gingerbread House (Piparkakkutalo) offers a delicious meal, I would say a little bit taste of gourmet with reasonable price. As it was after rush hours, middle of week, there were not so many people eating at upper, 2nd floor. I enjoyed a delicious fish which was just suitable (not too heavy to have before continuing driving). I will put that place in my mind if my friends will ask advices for good restaurant at Tawastehus - Hameenlinna.More

We went to the Gingerbread House for dinner, based on great TripAdvisor reviews. We had tasty, good enough mains. Then we tried to order the desserts. Now the restaurant doesn’t exactly have a great dessert selection, and had only 3 desserts on their menu plus...one on the specials board. The first waitress says “sorry, the lemon dessert is out of stock”. Ok, we thought, we can live without that, even though we wanted to have it. Then we place an order for the gingerbread ice cream and we get told by a second waitress that this too is out of stock. The waitress was completely unapologetic - is this a regular occurrence, perchance? Now if this was late in the evening midweek, I could understand it, but this was 7:30 on a Saturday night. There are going to be lots of unhappy customers tonight. Absolutely awful. Suffice to say we did not stay for the scraps of dessert that were availableMore
