This place has never changed. New owners are really friendly and the place seems a bit brighter somehow. The food is excellent value and the portions are generous. I would prefer more variety in the pan fried rather than battered fish. Almost all of the...More

Very casual dining. Minimalistic decor but still cosy. Chowder was delicious but way too much pepper sunk to the bottom that ruined the end of it. The fish and chips were average but something we needed to get when in New Zealand. But the service...More

Dine-in Blue cod n chips were fabulous. Portion served was a lot. However when we bought takeaway blue cod with squid rings n sausage, it tasted like another cook prepared the food -- soggy n oily.

Best Cafe has amazing fish and chips - especially the blue cod! The chips have a little seasoning on them that is superb as well. It's affordable and no frills and completely delicious. We heartily recommend!

Hi Lu, yes we have a Gluten Free batter option for our fish and oysters, however if you are celiac we don't recommend as it is cooked in the same fryer as our flour batter. We have many Gluten Free customers though who can... More

Established in 1932 the Best Cafe is a Dunedin icon. It has been through World War II and the Great Depression and has changed very little over the last 85 years it has been trading. I am very lucky to be running a restaurant that was originally started by my great-grandfather and then passed down to his son and family through until the 1980's. The following proprietors kept the traditions alive to maintain the Best Cafe's great reputation. As the proud owner of our old family restaurant my aim is to provide a truly unique dining experience, one where we can provide old fashioned, friendly service alongside a delicious plate of fresh, local seafood, golden hand cut chips and the best Bluff Oysters in New Zealand. If you want to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane and taste some traditional New Zealand fare then this is the place to visit.
