This used to be my favourite Japanese Restaurant in the late 80's when Japanese food was still new and exciting on the Melbourne dining scene. It's décor is still authentic, yet tired (nothing has changed). It has become so busy that on a Saturday night af 8.30 we had to wait for our table even though we had booked. It's... More

Melbourne has a lot of Japanese eateries ranging from the takeaways to high end posh restaurants. This place has a loyal following and possible a captive audience as there is not much else around. For the price and especially the fish quality - seriously? I have not had thinly sliced stringy raw salmon at a proper sit down restaurant in... More

Friend came here often years ago and it was very good, but it's not the same anymore. Both of us weren't excited about our food. They didn't use Japanese rice for sushi. Grilled eggplant didn't have the right flavors. The place just didn't have the Japanese finesse. Won't go back again.

Being curious by all friends recommend to ever try this restaurant, founded the environment is great though its a busy restaurant but the food (for me) just average. We tried from tepanyaki mixed, tepanyaki meat to ramen... and some more. I might say that there are plenty places offer you better food.

This is a busy restaurant with a good wine and food selection. While the gyoza were not all that impressive the beef tataki was excellent

We had been having post movie supper here for years. The grilled eggplant starters were partially cooked and flavourless. Seafood tapanyakis made up of mostly cheap squid pieces and muscles. Undercooked and bland. Presentation on plastic plates the last straw. This place needs to be avoided.

My favourite sushi in Melbourne. Kanpai is the only place I will go for sushi. I often take friends and staff from work. Friendly fast service with a smile always

My partner and I went here for dinner. We love Japanese food and visit Japan regularly. Can't get enough of it and so were hoping to find a little Japanese gem in Cairns. We were greeted at the door, and initially the service was prompt and friendly. The atmosphere and seating in a booth was nice, and we loved the... More

The food used to be good, have been going for a while and each time i visit it seems like an ingredient was dropped off the list. Cutting corners by lesser meat and such. Shame. Food is somewhat expensive considering the serving size given. Consider other restaurants, the food quality has fallen.

An average experience in terms of food and service, although in a nice location. Bit on the pricy side for the average food quality. Open till very late, which was the reason we went.

Staying in Chapel Street

Neighbourhood Profile
Chapel Street
Seek and ye shall find! Prahran is a treasure hunter’s paradise of vintage stores, upscale boutiques and emporiums. Chapel Street is a one-stop shop with specialty stores selling just about everything. The famous Chapel Street Bazaar has so many curious and vintage knick-knacks that you will feel as if you're in a huge and busy museum. By contrast, at the northern end of Chapel Street, South Yarra and Windsor cater to high-end designer labels and exclusive boutiques. The community flocks to Prahran’s organic markets as a Saturday ritual, while art and film students leaf through vinyl LPs on Greville Street. The gay community also has a strong presence here. Prahran’s heritage buildings like the Reads Emporium and Prahan arcade offer a grand sense of scale and history. No matter your interest, come feel the pulse of one of Melbourne’s most loved precincts.
