If you are after something different and out standing service be sure to check out the Journal. I went for lunch with some friends and ordered the Gnocchi Spinach and ricotta with tomato and basil sauce. The servings are massive, the taste is devine (you can tell they make every thing from scratch including the sauce) and you can see... More

Very popular at all times of the day for meet-ups, coffee, lunch and a general community feel. Might need to book. It is also handy to the City Library so great wifi.

Good coffee in cute cafe. A range of simple breakfast options with some interesting bruschetta. Porridge was good. Nice place.

Came to the Journal Canteen for lunch, and was incredibly surprised and how limited the menu was. About 8 options available, only 1 of which was vegetarian. The staff also didn't really offer any guidance, we had to ask for a menu before being told that it was only what was on the blackboards around. Two of our party ordered... More

Step in to a good menu and good coffee. Bacon and eggs on toast were well presented and tasty. Worth the visit.

I've eaten lunch here a few times now - upstairs in the canteen (not downstairs in the café). Good hearty pasta dishes, well presented. Bustling atmosphere, shared tables. Cosy on a cold winter's day. And good dessert! (we shared a piece of pie which was very good).

Avoid this place at all costs. I sat there for 40 minutes waiting for porridge only to be told by the rude waitress 'oh that order got lost'! No apology. Nothing. Meanwhile I was served the most bizarre tasting coffee I've ever had. It was undrinkable. With so much competition around the Melbourne CBD it'd incredible this is still in... More

Love this place, quiet and so cute! Their Chai tea on almond milk (boy was it hard to find almond milk in Melbourne) is one of the best I've had and their banana, cinnamon & walnut bread & house toasted, fruit & nut muesli with yoghurt and strawberries are so yum, you'll be back for more!

We ate here twice for breakfast- the canteen on Friday, & the café on Saturday. The Arabian smashed avo with beetroot, dukkah, feta & a poached egg will go down as one of the best (if not the best) smashed avo in a town where plenty of places do this well.

Once you get to the CAE, walk straight past Journal to Canteen upstairs. Same people, but a much better menu and ambiance. Always a small menu, always at least one entree that is vego. Small selection of wine, mostly Italian. I come here all the time. It is simple, well made home-style food. It's not expensive but not student food... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
