Really beautiful food in a stylish environment. We were heading somewhere cheaper but the queues there were huge and a friend had recommended Gingerboy. Despite us being underdressed (straight from the tennis) we were well looked after and the meal was fabulous. The Duck Thai red curry was a surprising highlight - which we had with with the corn fritters... More

We have dined at Gingerboy many times since it's opening in 2007. We dined here again on 18/1 and were amazed at how good the food, service and atmosphere are. We were seated upstairs around the bar. Old favourites such as the Son in Law eggs and prawn dumplings remain, together with dishes such as the snapper and flathead share... More

Gingerboy has a menu with plenty to choose from. It doesn't matter what you choose you know your going to get an outstanding dish. The environment is very nice, with fairy lights, peaceful music and fancy chairs. The Staff are very welcoming and tell you information about the dishes. My experience there was great and I highly recommend it if... More

We went to Gingerboy as part of a department meeting. There were 12 of us and we had a private table at the top of the stairs. The set up was great and the table was the perfect size so every one could interact with each other. The music was quite loud though which made it very difficult to talk... More

Very special restaurant. The food, wine and service were all excellent. We wanted to taste as much variation as we could so we tried each of the dumplings - yum. Next we worked our way through most of the street food section of the menu (small tasty dishes) - truly delicious Asian fusions. On this visit we did not get... More

Our group of 5 dined at Gingerboy for Friday lunch during the first week of January. It was unusually quiet. We enjoyed a selection of share plates - crispy chicken, wagyu brisket, pulled pork shoulder and green curry vegetables. Truly great flavours. The waiting staff were friendly and efficient, offering advice when requested. Two of us ordered wine by the... More

On a visit to Melbourne we bought an entertainment book and as Gingerboy was in it we decided to try it. Wow the food was excellent as was the service. Couldn't fault any of the dishes we ordered and have recommended this restaurant to friends when visiting Melbourne. The lane the restaurant is located isn't that appealing but the decor... More

Staff are very friendly, place is bit narrow, environment is pretty bar/modern feels. The food is quite good. Not a bad choice for a date night :). Only downside the rice was too hard and dry.

Interesting combinations of flavours, a lot of new ideas about food. However, the dishes we had were overspiced - when the taste of the main ingredient is not recognizable any more I may call it that. The Wagyu was chewy (how is that possible?) All in all too expensive for the performance.

Description
The dining experience at Gingerboy is centered on a modern Australian adaptation of the Asian hawker-style street market food. The restaurant's hustle and bustle, its fast-paced, youthful and dynamic environment is influenced not only by the dining culture of Southeast Asia but also by buzzing Asian marketplaces and an Asian sense of colour and fun.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
