Even though not a vegetarian found the food was absolutely beautiful. Fresh and tasty, well presented. Lovely surroundings and service was excellent. A wonderful experience.

While staying in the Lygon St vicinity we came across this wonderful Indian vegetarian/vegan restaurant. What a wonderful experience. Whilst not strictly vegetarians we do appreciate good, organic/biodynamic cuisine. Highly recommended .

Consistently great food over many decades. The tofu satay skewers are a satisfying filling delight. You will want to return.

We went to Shakahari as a group of friends and families so had a mix of adults and kids. It was a great menu, great diversity with many vegan delights. For kids with less adventurous palettes it was a bit challenging but also a chance to try something new. A great range of starters and mains. Overall, this was a... More

They know how to cook vegetables at Shakahari. The dishes are from various cuisines, not only from India as the name if the restaurant suggests.

Very good vegetarian and vegan place. Even though name sounds like Indian (Shakahari means vegetarian in Hindi) it does not have any dish with Indian flavor. However, other dishes won;t disappoint you. Reservation in advance is recommended. Staff is nice and accommodating in terms of storing coat/stroller.

We were invited to visit this place for lunch. Great atmosphere in an interesting building. Very good and friendly service. The menu had a list of appetizers (entrees) and mains (entrees in the US). I was surprised to see a relatively short list of options to select from. We ordered the linguini and the curry. They came relatively fast. The... More

Great secluded find in the middle of bustling Carlton. My boyfriend's mother is very conscious of what she eats. I did a bit of research and decided on Shakahari. I was so worried that I was going to crash and burn on this find. Luckily it was amazing. The team here are fabulous. Very friendly, attentive and helpful. And my... More

In our party there were delighted vegetarians (because they had more than one or two choices on the menu) and equally delighted meat eaters because the quality, taste and flavour of the dishes on offer was pleasing to all of us. Most of the menu is vegan and there's plenty of gluten free options too. The decor and the toilets... More

Staying in Lygon Street

Neighbourhood Profile
Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
