We have never eaten here but regularly drop in for a glass of quality wine and nibbles in a really fashionable, classy little space. A feel good Melbourne institution.

You could easily walk by this place and not know that inside is a foodie/wine connoisseur's version of Aladdin's cave. It's a cosy little European-style bistro with paintings and mirrors in gilded frames, century-old jarrah and red leather chairs; it feels very old-world. But the food is modern, fresh and superb. And the wine list is sensational. On top of... More

I actively looked for something Non-Hotel and Non-Asian for a Pre-Theatre meal. (As much as we like Asian food, we did not want any on that particular night out) Given our theatre's proximity to Melbourne's China town, we were lucky to find Punch Lane. The place is very cozy, in a dimly lit kind of way. There is a very... More

This restaurant is the epitome of style, grace, good food and wine. This must be on your list. Attended lunch with five friends and each of us had the 5 dish tasting plate. Each one was a standout and certainly by the end of it was sufficient. Wait staff was extremely helpful and nothing too much of a bother, we... More

Arranged to meet a new friend here. Hoping for a relaxed environment to discuss a prospective business alliance. Could not be happier. Friendly informal atmosphere. Ideal to discretely discuss business arrangements. Excellent wine list. Ideal environment.

Thanks to all the previous TripAdvisor contributors for your ratings of Punch Lane. We walked over from the Marriott last night and were able to sneak in for an early dinner (do get reservations if you go; they are popular and busy). A wonderful selection of wine and we just had to have some genuine Australian beef. Yum. A delightful... More

From the moment we walked in to when we left, the service was exceptional. Friendly, genuine and efficient. And the food!!! OMG THE FOOD!!! We had sheep's milk haloumi with PD prunes, honey and preserved lemon for entree. Mains were divine!!! I had the gruyere soufflé with cauliflower salad and my partner had wallaby with salt bush, macadamia, lime, bee... More

Popped in here while waiting for a friend. The staff were very happy to seat and serve a single customer. Went back another time with a larger group and the staff were just as accommodating...

Everyone was very excited when we said we were going to Punch Lane and I can see why - the food was unique and fantastic. We were a big group of 8, which sometimes results in really slow service, but the food was still quick to come and tasted great. The only complaint I had was that our wine was... More

Have been here a few times over the years and yet again, consistent. Food choices were great (quite a few for vegetarians), great wine list and lovely team looked after us all night. We choose the Chef's 5 courses and it had a few quite different and unexpected dishes in it but flavoursome and glad we trusted the chef. Love... More

A Melbourne institution now in its 22nd year Punch Lane is situated at the Paris end of the CBD near Parliament . We are also in the theatre precinct and perfect for a pre/post show bite to eat . glass of wine or a plate of cheese . Our food style is Modern European with Australian overtones , there is an extensive range of wines by the glass as well as an array of beers and spirits . We are house in one of the original CBD police stations as we where situated in the heart of the red light district of the time . We also boast the original chairs from the Southern Cross Hotel which was the home of the Beatles during their Australian Tour . We look forward to seeing you for a relaxed lunch, a glass of wine or an intimate dinner.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
