We were looking for a place for dinner and were enticed by the offer of free drinks and appetizers. Not a great selection in the free appetizer area, but we enjoyed the garlic bread. We had the lasagna and the Chicken Max. Both were decent, but nothing exceptional. Service was very good. It was also nice dining outdoors and being... More

This place will lure you in with the promise of free first drinks and an appy. So, we stupidly took the bait! Two glasses of warm house red wine were given to us and we had a choice of garlic bread or bruschetta. We aren't big eaters, so ordered a pizza to share. The waiter cocked his head and said... More

We found this restaurant on our first night in Melbourne. It had a great atmosphere with Indoor/Outdoor dining. The menu has a great selection of Italian and Australian meals, and a wide selection of local and international wines. Our meal was fantastic and the service was outstanding. Will definitely visit them again when next in Melbourne. Graeme.

There are so many restaurants on Hardware lane that they have to be good to survive. Max happened to be our choice, seduced in by a free glass of house wine with each main course ordered. The food was excellent Italian style and the pricing moderate. Enough said, we would like to go there again to try some other dishes.

I was with my parents looking for a place to eat lunch near our hotel (Mantra on Lt. Burke) and we came across a laneway with enticing restaurants along. Max is the first one and we notice that there were plenty of people and we wonder what the buzz was all about. The manager/owner was also very hands-on he catered... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
