The dumplings here are pretty good, although options are quite limited. We particularly enjoyed the wantons in chilli sauce as the sauce was a great accompaniment to the wantons. The dumplings we had were fine. Ambience wise, this place is rather cosy although i think there are floors above. We were seated downstairs on the first floor. There were frequent... More

I met a friend here for lunch when I was visiting Melbourne, he works in the CBD nearby and comes here regularly. If you want to come at any kind of peak time you'd best make a booking! Even though there are 3 (maybe more?) floors they were all pretty full when we arrived. Despite the place being busy, my... More

We are a couple who are looking forward to visit this place which supposedly serves the best dumpling in town. As our hotel is just a stone's throw away, we were dressed casually in shorts and tees. Before we get to approach the staff at the door for a table, we were already given a look of disdain. Next we... More

Rated for its dumplings, you won't be disappointed. These were truly terrific. I don't think you could pick one you didn't like. Top of my list, the Xiao Long Bao and the spicy Wontons. We progressed to mains after several dumpling tastings. Equally good mains. Not too spicy but on par with the ratings in the menu - some places... More

Checked out this place for lunch on a Monday and was really glad we didn't have to wait (had read reviews that there was a long line at times!). We were taken up several flights of stairs to a very spacious table for the 6 of us. We shared several plates of dumplings and a few other dishes. The Shao-long... More

I live in Sydney and visited Melbourne with my partner for a mix of work and pleasure. We love good food and I told someone at work that we had a booking at the chef hat restaurant in Market Lane and they recommended the dumpling bar across from it. On the Saturday we had no plans for lunch before seeing... More

Had a great lunch including many versions of steamed dumplings which were delicious. Staff were helpful and the food was quick although we were rushed a bit as the kitchen was closing at 2.45pm. Chinese tea was a bit tasteless which was a shame. Very basic little retaurant but we were lucky enough to sit in the front window was... More

Hutong is always consistent. Prompt service, reasonable prices, but very popular so booking is a good idea. Order a spread of delicious dumplings, and include an order of pan-fried dumplings. They take a bit longer to prepare and will hit the table just as you finish the rest and will be ready for more.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
