My wife and I had an excellent dining experience at Lou Portaou's. The restaurant is situated in an 16th Century passage way. Uniquely decorated and romantically lit. The menu selections were all in French, however, our waiter were able to translate it for us. The food preparation and presentation was excellent. We both enjoyed our meals immensely. This was a... Lou Portaou is located just of one of the main shopping streets in Bormes. We were there for lunch. The food was very good and well priced. The waiter combined our dishes into one menu which gave us a great price. Very nice. The wine choice is straightforward and good. No fancy long lists only understandable for experts. We loved... Dined here in July as a couple. This provencal patoie-named restaurant "The Door/ Gate" is charming and unusually situated under a classified 12th century stone arch and hallway, very medieval looking. The chef (and owner maybe) has been there for nearly 30 years. We had a romantic dinner and enjoyed the food, there's a good selection of aperitifs and wines,... More

Having booked, we were disappointed not to be offered a decent table - there are two round tables that seat four or five, insist on one! Very earnest food, trying hard to be complicated, and succeeding. We were in a party of four and none of us had a plate we would return for. A shame, because the location is... More

This restaurant is down a small street and off of the main plaza area, so you need to search for it.....but it's worth the effort. The food is fabulous! I was a little cautious when we were seated in the courtyard/cave area, which also seems to be access to the apartments and stairs to the street above. The tables and... More

There are many eating options in the tiny hillside village of Bormes Les Mimosas and many are middling to awful. Lou Portaou is one of the exceptions, and in nine visits over eight years, it has never proved a poor choice. The best seating is in the cave/tunnel which adjoins the kitchen. It's a warm, friendly atmosphere, and although the... More

I tried to get in here last summer and it was fully booked so had to go elsewhere. So I was definitely going to make sure I tried it this time round. And I was a little disappointed having read all these reviews. The service was slow and the food, whilst tasty, a bit too heavy for my liking (I... More

Visited this restaurant for lunch as we were attracted by its pretty exterior en its interesting menu. We chose the formule at 26 euros, consisting of an excellent tapanade, an amuse-bouche of a tasty carrot soup like concoction with a tiny creamy mousse on top, followed by a choice of main course and dessert. We both chose artichokes stuffed with... More

The place is small, so be sure to call to book a table at least 2 days in advance if you're in the busy tourist period. You will find there a very typical French restaurant. Not so much for the food they serve but for the atmosphere. It is tiny, under a dome of centuries old stones, which gives it... More
