About
Handmade Wood-Fired Sourdough Pizzeria in the secret garden behind Patsy Dan's bar. About us: Why Sourdough - The long leavening process and use of only organic stoneground flour, water and a bit of salt in production makes it digestible, nutritious and tasty. Join the sourdough revolution. Big up to Ben Mackinnon of E5Bakehouse in Hackney who started us on this path to sourdough enlightenment in exchange for wind, waves, power cuts and whisky in a wintery Donegal. Why Dunfanaghy - We like to get outside and there is no better place than Co. Donegal! We have created somewhere we want to work and hang out. Big thanks to everyone in Patsy Dan's Bar, especially the Devine family, for all their help and continued support. Who - An eclectic crew of artists, horse riders and surfers are putting in the required hours to bring hand-mixed sourdough to your table. Enjoy. Mainly walk ins but we do take some bookings for larger groups by e-mail / Facebook pm.

We booked online via Facebook for the 5pm sitting. On arrival we were explained the new rules regarding Covid, nothing onerous. We were given a great table under cover (it rained during our time there, but we felt no drops) opposite the wood fired pizza oven - so could see all the action! the drinks are served from the pub next door - all very efficiently The pizzas we had were just perfect = great bases and toppings - not a fault. the music playing really added to the rustic and relaxed atmosphere One of the highlights from our week visiting the area

Rusty oven was full but they suggested going into Patsy Dan's and you get the same menu. It was mental busy so you had to wait 90 mins for pizza so theh suggested garlic bread while you wait. Shor if was the size of a pizza. The nicest one ever. But I loved the old pub with an old black telephone fiddle old punt nots on the wall. Full of character this place is. The rusty oven is ag the back of it and you order your pizza there and try accept cash only. Bar takes contactless. Staff were really great in both places. One guy not wearing a mask which is a shame.

The restaurant Wasn’t taking booking so we arrived 10 mins after opening and all the tables were gone. Delighted to hear a neighbouring pub allowed the over flow to sit in with pizza from the rusty oven served to the table. Approx 30 mins wait time on food after we ordered which was grand as there was bar service to the table also. Really enjoyed the goats cheese and caramelised onion pizza. A trendy restaurant where you can watch the chefs spin and make the pizza.

You really need to book ahead because it's so popular. You book through their Facebook page and everything is sorted in advance. We ended up with an outside table which leaves you at the mercy of the elements but we were lucky. We got to sit out in the sun with great pizza and drinks. The menu is pretty simple but the quality of the pizzas was top class. The garlic bread starter is a new twist on garlic bread and went down well with our kids. The alcoholic drinks were served by separate staff from Patsy Dan's bar but it's a largely invisible distinction. They do two sittings but both seemed to be fully booked. They take the Covid regulations seriously and ensure things are done properly. Definitely worth the effort of booking ahead. Oh, it's cash only so just keep that in mind before you arrive.

Have eaten in the Rusty Oven twice recently & absolutely no complaints! They are totally up to speed with Coronavirus precautions & eating outside feels especially safe. The sourdough pizzas are so tasty & there is a great range of toppings. The staff are attentive, polite and keen to please and the atmosphere is relaxed & backed by a good playlist. The bar staff waiting on tables are also very efficient. All in all, a great experience.

Second year in a row that we’ve been messed around by this amateur-hour restaurant. This year we booked an early table as we’re here on holiday with our toddler, received the text the day before to confirm and promptly replied to confirm (and received the confirmation back) and then showed up to a locked up restaurant. When we asked in the attached bar we were told they’d “decided not to open.” No contact received from them to cancel but apparently “sure it’s on their Facebook.” Totally raging that we wasted our time driving here to be messed around and now we’re driving round Donegal looking for dinner with our kid. Last year was a pretty similar situation. Pizzas are pretty doughy and overloaded with toppings anyway but there’s so little choice in Dunfanaghy and the bar attached has great Guinness so it’s the only reason we tried to go again this year. Avoid.

My family have gone here the past few years that we’ve stayed in dunfanaghy and we really enjoyed the experience this year too, any pizza fanatic like myself will LOVE this restaurant. The sourdough is absolutely incredible and our waiter was friendly and helpful, they even have some gluten free options. Since there weren’t any bookings available we had to wait for a seat for about an hour, so if you are planning on going, make sure to book your seats at least a few months before.

The pizzas here are first class, nice thin bases ( made on site) and superb flavours. Staff are very attentive even though it was very busy. Really best to book, though one can turn up for takeaways

This place is a gem. Rusty Oven has a serious offering for vegans, wish I took a pic but absolutely inhaled it in seconds because it was that good. Melty vegan cheese and perfect toppings (capers, chilli olives etc). Sublime crust. Top tier pizza. Genuinely than any vegan pizza I can get in London. Thanks for a belter of a meal and actually taking the time to make something special for the plant based gang. Vegans, GO HERE! You won’t be disappointed I promise. Also there’s a great organic Rioja on the menu I would recommend to go with your pizza. Too good.

We booked via Facebook and felt the staff were friendly and helpful. Decor and atmosphere was great, well spaced out but you could *almost* forget about Covid, with the cool vibe there. Goats cheese green pizza was delicious, washed down by a bottle of kinnegar from the bar next door. Heaven. Well worth a visit.

My boyfriend and I have absolutely loved our diner there. The pizzas are really good and different from other places, and the place is really nice with an outdoor garden area, or indoor really cosy by the fire. Service was really fast! Really recommend this place for a quick lunch/diner!

I have lived in Dunfanaghy for many, many years. The Rusty Oven is rated No1 of 14 restaurants in Dunfanaghy. There are not 14 restaurants in Dunfanaghy, sooooo the first claim to fame is simply incorrect. Secondly, if it is a friendly relaxing evening that you are seeking, look elsewhere. The Rusty Oven offers a noisy experience and long waits for run of the mill food. The staff are mostly rude and expert in sarcasm. The tables are sticky and dirty, service is definitely not with a smile. Obviously, the management (if there is one) has become overcomplacement, believing that because they are busy they are excellent in what they do. My visitors from UK couldn't wait to leave this establishment, never to return.

The Rusty Oven was a complete surprise! Hand made and tossed wood oven pizza that was light as can be and delicious. My wife and I sat outside and enjoyed a quiet dinner on a weekday night. The restaurant was very crowded, and reservations would be suggested. The waitstaff was solid, we felt well taken care of. The drinks menu is a bit odd as the only alcoholic beverages available are wine by the bottle. This suited us however, and was not an issue. Would I visit again? Absolutely.

Luckily we got a cancellation when we tried to get a table , good pizza , very chilled and relaxed in a good way , packed so you must book. Trip advisor doesn't give a "good" rating, just average or very good. It's a good place- I'd recommend it

Serving up beautifully made pizza in unique surroundings, The Rusty Oven nails it! The food is always amazing and this visit was no different, ideally book as this place is always heaving and deservedly so. The staff are all wonderful and friendly which is a big plus when out as a family and not as a couple! You cannot beat the charm or this place and the story of it, we make sure to visit as often as possible!
