Used to have the best chowder in the country

We visited My Melody Bistro a few years ago and were amazed by the chowder. It was delicious and its presentation was wonderful. We made a number of trips from Dublin to Athlone simply to have the chowder. On our last couple of visits to the Bistro we were disappointed to find the quality of the chowder had dropped significantly.

Lovely food

Greeted by a friendly girl. Menu was great,good choice and Kiddies menu meals €5.95. I had mushroom carbonara (no bacon no chicken) served with garlic bread. Others had chicken gougons chips and salad. The menu has lasagna,curry,fish and chips, stir-frys,burgers,salads,sandwiches,wraps,soups etc Something for everyone. So three mains two cokes one hot chocolate and one tea served with biscuits was €44.95. Everything was lovely . If I had one piece of advice it would be that it is difficult to get good chips in many restaurants so I would make my own if that were possible for you,if not and you buy in chips choose the better quality thicker chips. Great to see lots of happy customers there today both inside and outside. Good to hear under new owner and there will be a name change. Best of luck ongoing and we will be back soon. Ty

Really lovely place

We called in on a Friday evening , we were on a quick overnight stop in the town and came across the restaurant coming down the hill past the castle . It was very quiet , and we got seated straight away , the waitress was so friendly and our food was delicious , we had breaded chicken with mushroom sauce and tagliatelle . It was so tasty, the double chocolate brownie was also delicious . We really enjoyed our drinks and food and we would definitely be back next time we are in Athlone.

Worst service I ve ever had ..like Fawlty towers terrible experience

The menu looked good and reasonable so decided to try it. There were 6 of us ..each can of drink ( which you paid 2.50)even though we saw the owner coming in with them after bulk buy) each can came over seperately to our table which at first we just laughed off. Then meals came out two at a time at first but two of us didn't get anything. We asked after nearly everyone was finished My freind and her son both had fish so we coukdbt work out why they weren't cooked at time time. The girl explained the chef had forgotten they were in the oven! After another 20 mins waiting still nothing complained again by this time everyone's finished. We spoke with the owner who offered two free desserts. Eventually ours came out..my freinds sons fish looked totally different to the one my freind had. On second bite of my pulled pork focchaia ..which was a nap not what you think..the middle of the pork was really cold so not propely heated. I ended up not bothering to have another as totally did t trust what I got or I d be 100 by the time it arrived. If you want to find somewhere in covid you can stay more than 90 mins this is your place as it takes longer to get your food. Then the bill came we d had lunch menus the fish was 11.50..owner charged 14.95 off dinner menu even though we hadn't been given them .when quieried he was gutted that making up the free dessert money had t paid off. As we were leaving a man with kids came up ranting that they d been waiting for their kids good for ages but had there's ..and was ready to leave. Where is Gordon Ramsay when you need him. Anyway we saw an amazing looking restaurant over the bridge looking over the river.we said we d visit next time .at all costs do not waste your time or money at the melody toilets also are a war zone

Outdoor shelter was very good, kept us warm and dry. Food was average, but I did enjoy it. The service however was quite poor. We waited at least 20-25 mins before having to ask for our menus and were told one table of 6 “had all the menus”. Waited 30-40 mins for our food to arrive. It was fine, nothing amazing. After finishing, we waited another 30 mins and no one came near to allow us to order dessert or to take away our plates. Staff were very forgetful and didn’t seem interested in serving customers. After waiting too long too order a dessert we decided to skip dessert and get the bill. My friend went inside to ask for the bill as no one was coming near us to see did we need anything. When she asked for the bill the waitress sighed at her and turned away to get the bill leaving her completely shocked. Service here was very poor and I most definitely would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

"There is no table 15"

The original restaurant booked had to cancel due to a failed cooker so at the last minute we booked "My Melody". The appearance from the outside wasn't very enticing but we proceeded in giving it a chance. Our starters arrived and were ok. That is where the good story ends. The waiters hadn't a clue on how the table service worked, we waited 1 hr & 20 mins for our mains 1 of 8 appeared but we later discovered that wasn't our main. Our other mains it happens went to other tables. The waiting staff wandered around asking if people owned certain dishes. It was such a disappointing experience and we ended up leaving without having our mains. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Terrible restaurant

This is the worst restaurant I have been to!! Service is terrible and the waiters are very forgetful and inexperienced. My husband ordered a 2nd beer which he did not receive and dirty dishes were left on unoccupied tables for a lengthy time after customer had left. The food is only average, I had the ribs, which were over cooked and had very little meat on them. I could see people at other tables beside us waiting to order but staff were not checking on outdoor tables. After waiting for over 10 mins to ask for the bill I went inside and asked who I think is the owner/manager for a bill. I mentioned that my husband had not received his 2nd beer. The man said it was not his problem anyway as they do not serve beer and they get them from the bar next door!! This was not mentioned to us at any point when we placed the drinks order. I did not receive an apology or even a thank you as I paid our bill. The fault in this restaurant seems to be coming from poor rude management. Dont waste your money dining here!

This is a place I will avoid, we called early on a Sunday evening and found the place empty, never a good sign but we figured it was too early for dinner crowd and too late for lunch . We were hungry and the young lady who was there greeted us with a smile and gave us our menu and my wife had chicken stir fry and I had the cod and chips, I asked for a coffee while we were waiting only to be told the coffee machine was broken, so I got a bottle of sparkling water instead but was just given the bottle, no glass, our food arrived in a reasonable time and was tasty enough to satisfy. When I went to pay I was then told cash only as the card machine was not working, luckily I has some cash, after reading other reviews it seems this card machine has been broken for months. In general it needs a good clean up and all the broken machines fixed but I for one will not be back again

Terrible food & worse service

Place looked busy and nice location near the river so decided to sit down for lunch. Bad decision. 30mins to take our order (another family left as they never got theirs). Order taken and another 30mins for 2 samdwiches and one soup. We were told the soup was tomato but turns out it was leek. One of the sandwiches was inedible. Ordered 2 drinks that never came but were on the bill. Watter did come with 2 dirty glasses which I sent back. I complained and the 2 dtinks were removed and I was offered free dessert. I declined as I couldn't get out of the place quick enough.

We sat down to eat here this evening and were extremely disapointed in the food and service we received , No Ice with our drinks , no cutlery with food, food order wrong for the kids, my plate from my starters was left on the small table while we ate out mains and when the mains arrived they were actually inedible, the sauce on the tortillinies was yellow and the food was burnt, even the kids couldn't eat the simple fish and chips, we ate because we had a long day and long journey home. Before we left I overheard the manger speaking in an extremely disrespectful way to one of the girls who works there, if you don't treat you're staff well you will never have a good buissness. By the way we don't have airs an graces but I expect decent food and service when I am paying. Very disapointed won't go back.

First meal out in a long time and if was a disaster. Service was beyond terrible. At one point we had meals in front of us, no cutlery, no condiments and eventually a server asked us would we need forks. Just forks! We were then each handed a fork, held out to us by the tines. You couldn't make this up. My starter and dessert were very nice but that is where it all ended. One server made us feel very unwelcome, lots of eye rolls and a general bad attitude that was nearly comical. Every request was an effort and we ordered far less extras than we usually would as a result. A bit of organisation, a lot of cleaning and serious staff training required here. We won't be back and we will actively not recommend it.

Horrrible experience

This place was recommended by the tourist office in Athlone Castle which really surprised me. Firstly we went for lunch and had a lo g wait for the menus. Then between menus and very bad service it took over an hour for our food. The food was mediocre. The tables were sticky. Social distance was non-existant as they crammed as many people in as possible. The staff were totly inexperienced and kept delivering the food to the wrong tables. The owner put some extra tables out. They were picnic tables which were fold up and very grotty. No attempt at covering with paper table cloths to cover the grime. Everyone waited a long time for their food. My partner used the gents and said they were disgusting and the ladies was much the same. No attempt at cleanliness. It was a horrible experience and judging by most of the other reviews we were not the only people who had this awful experience. It was an owner who took full advantage of outside dining and just threw up bad food and bad dining experience with no respect for people and customers. I am embarassed that people from another country would have this experience - how awful and all they would think is the Irish are dirty and would dish up any old slop to customers

Very bad food and ssevice

A gang of three of us stopped here for lunch as there were very little places serving food outside. The service was slow, had to ask twice for ice in our drinks. My friend ordered a toasted sandwich and what arrived was a limp looking thing barely heated. She sent it back and it arrived back just the same. She couldn’t eat it, it looked disgusting. I had the open smoked salmon sandwich and it was good, no dressing on the salad leaves though. My other friend ordered the chowder and it was just cream and fish. Very disappointed with the whole experience, the waitress was nice but they weren’t trained enough. I wouldn’t advise anyone to go there. Sean’s bar next door does burgers and chicken wings and we should have gone there

We visited this restaurant for breakfast on Sunday 27th June. Its in a great location at the foot of the castle and beside the river. Tables were outside on street and under canopy due to Covid restrictions. However the service was very slow, breakfast was no longer being served (12pm) so only lunch menu available. Club sandwich was average at best, Sea food chowder was inedible. Also it was filthy, sticky tables and just tatty everywhere. The only thing that came quick was the bill.... We wont be back anytime soon

Horrible experience

Visited recently and was shocked at how bad this restaurant was. We sat outside at a table which could only be described as grotty. On the table beside us someone had trapped a wasp in a glass and he was there for the entire time of our meal until I freed him. One of the items on the menu was fish, I asked what type of fish was it but received the reply, "it is battered" I thought the server was joking but she wasn't...when I asked again she said, I dont know, will I ask the chef? I didn't have the fish but ten minutes later a lady at the table close to ours asked the same girl the same question and got the same reply😀 My meal and my sons meal were fine; however, my wife's meal was inedible. She asked for stuffed chicken but received plain chicken covered in breadcrumbs. When she cut into the chicken it was pink and had not been cooked. We decided we had enough, paid our bill and left.
