We visited Thyme for the third time recently, having really enjoyed our previous visits. There was some obvious changes made to accommodate social distancing ect, which was fine. The disappointing part was the fact that the portion size was noticeably smaller and the prices noticeably dearer. My wife had probably the smallest glass of wine she's ever seen. Also, having spent €55 a head for three courses, one would think a cup of tea or coffee would be complementary. It wasn't. The food is second to none but I can't help but feel I was a little ripped off. Athlone and surrounding areas punch way above their weight when it comes to great restaurants. There is better value out there!

Myself and my husband visited this restaurant for a Friday night sitting quite recently and were so impressed we booked again for the Sunday night just after. I'm a Vegan and my husband is not. From reading their website I noted that I should advise them of this when booking, which I did, and am delighted that I did so as the Chef prepared a vegan set menu for me before hand. Also it was noted as a value menu so for a 3 course meal it was only €35. I had a broccoli and almond soup to start, gnocchi and seasonal veg for mains and pear and sorbet for desert. My husband ordered from their main set menu which was €55 having the scallop to start, monk fish for his mains and chocolate tart for desert. Both meals were delicious and well worth the money. In addition to this they have a decent wine list and great cocktail list where they use aquafaba instead of egg whites in the cocktails making them vegan friendly also. I really can't recommend Thyme restaurant enough, it was such a treat!

We came to dinner early and were seated immediately. The waitress gave some recommendations to fit our differing tastes. The chef was willing to change what he side dishes to go with a main dish for my spouse at no extra charge. Food was excellent. The waitress came back to make sure we were well taken care of.

Firstly, the food was superb. I ate the veal to start which was delicious followed by the beef which was cooked to perfection. The food was of the highest quality. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I also liked the fact that the menus were forwarded to us prior to our arrival to cut down of waiting time. I did have some issues however. 1. We were seated directly in front of the main door. I made my reservation a number of weeks ago so this was very disappointing. As such, we were often cold throughout our meal as guests entered and exited regularly. 2. My wife informed staff of her mild nut allergy (the majority of the dishes contained nuts.) As such she was advised to have the scallops and black pudding which she went ahead and ordered. When it arrived there was no black pudding and the waitress stated that this was due to a disclaimer on the packaging which read, “may contain nuts”. My wife should have been informed of this at the start and either given the option to order something else or to make a substitute. The choice to have the scallops without the pudding should have been hers, not the chefs or waitresses. Simply handing her half of what she ordered wasn’t good enough, especially when being charged for the full dish. 3. While we were eating, one of the waitresses came and began spraying disinfectant on an adjacent table. The table was still vacant when we left at 10.30pm so it could have waited until we were finished eating. I enjoyed our meal but for the price paid (€140 for two people), the issues above should not have occurred.

This was my 4th time at this restaurant - i was really looking forward to it as i hadnt been in almost 4 years. Service was good and friendly but food was a let down. Surprised to see some of the same items on the menu 4 years on. As i had enjoyed the ham hock previously i went for that for starters - nicely presented but felt it was lacking any flavour. The person attending with me had the cheese mousse which they enjoyed. Mains we had hake and venison. Mussels that came with the hake were cold, hake was nice but the sauce it was sitting on was horrible - tasteless and not a nice consistency and almost spoiled the really fresh fish. Venison portion was very small and was jsut ok. Desserts were ok. at €50 per head we felt it was over priced for the portions we received and the quality of food. will not be rushing back unfortunately.

This beautiful restaurant ticks every box. The staff make dining here a pleasure with their attention to detail and warm and friendly welcome. Best of all is the food, elegantly presented, fresh and varied. It is art on a plate. When we booked i mentioned to the owner it was my fiancees birthday and he went to the trouble of adding her name and birthday message to her dessert. I have visited before and will continue to do so. I would definitely say this is one of the best restaurants in ireland. It sure is our favourite. Thank you to john and the staff for another terrific meal. Sean and judi

We dined here as a large group of six adults with two babies and had a lovely experience. The food was excellent and they had a great kids menu( this isn’t on their website but handed out on the table!). They were very welcoming and accommodating of the babies in the group making sure we had everything we needed for their meal. We all got the three course set menu and everything across all courses was excellent. They had good social distancing in place with partitions between table and sanitised the credit card machine before each use at our table. Overall lovely experience, would definitely recommend!

Booked a table for 2 in Thyme restaurant for 815. Afternoon on the day of visiting we were sent pics of menu. Arrived at restaurant and server took our order. My wife went for Scallops for starter and lamb for main. I went for ham hock for starter and beef for main. All our food was, superb, but the stand out for me was the ham hock starter. Absolutely devine.. We both had chocolate tart for dessert. In my corrispondent with the restaurant I mentioned it was my birthday and our wedding anniversary and to our shock our desserts were personalised. Pics attached. It was a great visit. The staff, the atmosphere and most importantly the food were all perfect. So looking forward to visiting again soon

Celebrated a special event last night in Thyme, and the food was fabulous. The lamb starter with curried chickpeas and the beef with crispy cheeks were particular highlights The staff were very friendly and all precautions were taken. A great night, although we fought over the yummy sticky toffee pudding(!), we'll be back!

I did enjoy my meal but unfortunately there was a very limited vegetarian choice for my other half. 1 vegetarian starter on the main menu but they did accommodate a further two choices off menu. Only one vegetarian main dish and no alternative. This is of course not unusual for most restaurants and the industry needs to do something about this as more and more take up this choice. There was a party of 5 in the restaurant and they were exceptionally loud and you could see from their table several bottles of wine had been consumed and this was contributing to their high sprits. The noise was so bad that we contemplated leaving after our first course. I could overhear the table next to us discussing the level of noise as well and they were very unhappy leaving as they said quite loudly that the “the shouting is ridiculous in here” I guess hoping the table would hear them. The floor manager eventually went to their table and had a word and then silence was blissful. And fair play to her for doing this as it can be a delicate situation to handle. Ah I thought, we can get back to an enjoyable evening at last. Unfortunately that didn’t happen as the wine continued to be poured by the waitress’s and the more they guzzled the louder they got. I went to the toilet downstairs at one stage and I could hear them shouting and laughing above the normal drum of a bustling restaurant. My issue is that the staff contributed to our and other customers discomfort by filling them up with wine after they were already asked to keep it down. The staff did not ask us at any point how our meal was either as if they did I would have used the opportunity to tell them I actually developed a headache throughout the course of the evening as a result of the party of 5. The food was good and it was clear that a lot of time and effort was put into each plate. The only one small issue I had was there was no seasoning on the tables and this is common place since Covid but most other restaurants will ask at least would we like seasonings. Will I go back again, most likely at some stage.

We selected Thyme as it seemed to be one of the only places in Athlone offering fine dining. We were not disappointed with our choice, and we were offered two tasting menus at a set price. My wife selected the June seasonal menu, and I decided on the a la carte. both were amazing. Make sure you visit if you’re in town.

The staff were friendly and helpful, it's not easy working in masks all the time, nothing was too much trouble. Loved the food especially the ham hock dish. My lamb was perfectly cooked, and my husband said his beef was gorgeous with a very tasty jus . Desserts finished the meal perfectly. Will definitely be back. Thankyou

We must have caught them on a bad day as our previous day was really good. No forks on the table. Monkfish was cold in the middle , sent it back , came back exactly the same , no apologies ,and I was not asked if it was ok . I left it behind. Another of our groups Pork was very rare , sent it back , came back in 3 pieces and obviously fried and tough. Again no apologies. Also had to ask a second time for my daughters coke. Wasn't going to order desert or coffees because of the bad experience. Overall a disappointing meal and €140 for 4 adults and one child.

Very disappointed with the serious lack of vegan and vegetarian options in such a high end restaurant. Could not find one veggie option on the menu. I note on trip advisor it says vegan options available. I presume if I had asked, the staff would have created something, however I don't think you should have to feel awkward and special request the kitchen to make something that isn't on the menu. Please add more vegan/veggie options! I've left 3 stars as the person I attended the restaurant with has said their dish was very nice. I however was very disappointed.

Made a last minute (2 hours prior) dinner reservation on a sunday night and got it They have a 3 or 5 course dinner set and even the former is sufficient. Portions are large. And the food is delicious - goat cheese starter, crispy pork main and custard pie dessert Service very good as well Solid 9/10
