We had a lovely meal last Saturday. the restaurant isn't much to look at from the outside and its on a side street so its unlikely you will find it by simply walking past. It is worth finding though. Its interior is inviting and comfortable the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The are currently using virtual menus (you scan a code on your phone and it brings it up) my dad is not tech savvy though so we did request a paper menu which was not an issue.
We booked for 6.30 so we were able to get their early bird menu which is great value. The rest of the menu didn't look overpriced either though.
The food was fresh and full of flavour, the vegetables had a lovely texture to it. My vegan sister had no problem ordering. My fussy nephew who does not like sauce on anything had some issues but its not an Irish style restaurant so that's to be expected. There were able to alter a chicken dish to make it as plain as possible for him too.

Great food and quirky decor. Some of the nicest Thai food I’ve had in a long time. It’s pricier than other Thai restaurants I’ve tried but the food is super tasty and the staff are pleasant and helpful. I started wit chicken satay skewers. Plenty of meat and sauce was pleasant, about 3/5 for this dish. A bit under seasoned for my taste.
The meal took off after this though! We ordered the Crying Tiger, red Penang chicken curry and the Som Tum Set. ALL to die for. My wife isn’t a fan of Thai cuisine, although it’s my favourite. However, she was blown away by the crying tiger and the Som Tum Set.
Overall, a delicious experience, and friendly staff. Highly recommended

The food was excellent and they were very accommodating to my partners food allergy. We had the set menu and shared a dessert, every dish was delicious and fresh. The service was excellent and all the servers maintained there distance as much as possible without impacting there customer service. Each table was sanitised between bookings and they had hand sanitizer for customers to use. Overall this was an excellent dining experience and we will definitely be back next time were in athlone.

We spent almost two weeks staycationing around Ireland. This was on our journey home and was thee best food of the trip. Really loved the flavours and variety of dishes. A brilliant waiter helped us decide on dishes and if chicken or beef went better with the massaam curry, he advised chicken - perfect!! We had a dish each with rice and the mee krob on the side. Fantastic portion sizes and affordable prices. €75 for the two of us including a bottle of wine. We will return to Athlone for this Thai restaurant alone!

Tonight I received chicken satay as a main and fried rice. I literally received chicken on skewers with v little sauce in a separate small white pot. It was very dry, too dry to eat.
I understood this dish to be satay curry with chicken and vegetables, Inedible I am afraid after my husband driving round trip one hour to retrieve. Portion sizes are also very reduced. Won't be back - used to be fab spot.

Thanks for your comments. We are very sorry that you were unhappy with your order. It is quite some time since you were in with us as the main course dish you are referring to was taken off the menu nearly 2 years ago. We do have customers who order satay chicken skewers with a rice or fried rice and that is what our chef would have made as that is what would print into the kitchen.
Our portion sizes have not changed at all. We still have the same no of starters in each bag and the same weight in each takeaway. We are still a fab spot. We change our menu from time to time as we are always listening to what our customers like and we are always testing out new dishes. Nothing ever remains the same.

I liked the atmosphere of Kin Khao and the service was very efficient. As a celiac I appreciate that all of the curries are gluten free. I ordered the Lao curry beef and although the beef and vegetables were good quality, the flavor just wasn’t for me. I normally like yellow curries, but I wanted to try something different. This is no reflection on the restaurant, what I ordered just wasn’t the right thing for me (and it’s really my fault that I didn’t ask how spicy the dish was). I would definitely go back though, and maybe try the yellow curry.

We ate here on sunday last, august bank holiday weekend. They appear to not have reduced capacity at all from the previous times I've been here. I was back to back with the people behind me. While I wasnt facing them, this still doesnt adhere to the 2 meter rule...or even 1 meter! They had sanitizer and staff wore visors but the close proximity of people was just wrong. Felt very uncomfortable and wont be returning even after Covid, very disappointed with the Management of this establishment. They were very busy with takeaway so just greedy to try and cramp people in against all the advice. Unfair on decent restaurants adhering to the guidelines.

I enjoyed the food, which was delicious. It is more expensive than your average Thai place, but there is an early bird menu as well, which is much cheaper. All good, but be warned: there is no indication of how hot is the food. My yellow curry was mild, which I did not want and the tom yum soup too hot for my daughter. So DO ASK how hot it is, as it is not on the menu

We arrived on a cold, wet and windy Sunday afternoon without having made a reservation. Our welcome was warm and instant and we were promptly let to a cosy corner table.The decor is eclectic, colourful and for our taste very appealing to the eye. We had one cold and one warm starter and both were very artistically presented. For mains we each had a mixed seafood dish, mildly spicy - cannot remember the name - and very tasty. Service was friendly, attentive and alert. We'll be back. Highly recommended.

I have reviewed this restaurant on at least 2 previous occasions. From a Covid-19 perspective, everything seems fine as is what you might expect. My wife's favourite food is Thai food and this is her favourite one that she has visited. She started with the chicken wings in a fish sauce which she really enjoyed. She then had the Yellow Curry which she simply adored. I had the pork skewers to start and then had the Panang Curry which was delicious. I detected a little "kick" to this dish. It was very good, both of us had the really nice fried rice and they offered extra rice when they saw us flying through it, an unusual offer I would say but a nice one. If you like Thai food and are planning on a meal out in the Athlone area, include this in your plan and you will not be disappointed.

We have long been fans of Kin Khao and regard it as the best Thai restaurant on this island. In recent months with lockdown we have had regular takeaway meals from Kin Khao at the weekends and they never fail to impress. We have them delivered by the Delivery Guys which is a great local service.
For myself as a vegetarian the starter just has to be the fresh spring rolls, these are raw fare served cold but bursting with flavour - great vegetables and herbs and served with cashew nuts and a wonderful sweet chilli sauce.
For main courses our firm favourite is the roast cashew nut stir fry - with vegetables for myself and usually with chicken for my wife. We generally order these dishes with noodles but you could opt for rice or potatoes. A close second would be the Thai yellow curry which is equally good. It is just brilliant to be able to get such quality food delivered to the door when restaurant visits are not possible due to Covid restrictions.

My wife and I stopped in here on Tuesday evening during an overnight stay in Athlone.
We hadn't booked, but that was no issue notwithstanding the fact that it was busy, even for a Tuesday.
The restaurant itself is located in a very interesting building on Abbey Lane which possibly could lay claim to being one of the oldest and most interesting buildings in the town of Athlone.
We had a great meal and evening here.
The food we ordered was of the highest quality in terms of preparation, taste and presentation.
The Khai Soi ( egg noodles, pickled cabbage and chicken in a coconut sauce) which I ordered as a main course, was really good.
The atmosphere was also just right with prompt friendly but not overly intrusive service.
A big thank you too to Vik and the rest of the team who looked after us so well on the night.

Had the pork belly wok, seafood wontons and chicken wings. All ordered on line for pick up. I arrived very early and it was no problem - my food was cooked fresh and no complaining from staff for my very early arrival. Would have preferred more spice with pork belly but I wok ask next time!

Myself and a couple of friends ate here lately and overall it wasnt a great experience. The food was very average. A bug walked across the plate for one of our starters. We sent it back. 3 of us got the same main course and it was very dry, lacked taste. There was no ice for our drinks. We were told they would take the starter with the bug off the bill which they did not. We asked however afterwards and they did but was not very professional. Would have expected more than just a €5 starter to be knocked off for something like that. Would not recommend going here.

Firstly apologies for the bug. Something like this isn't acceptable when one is dining. I have checked with the kitchen and floor staff. They examine each dish before it leaves the kitchen and also before the floor staff serve to the table. They are confident there was nothing on the plate when they served. It is possible that the bug was airborne and decided to land on this particular plate. We have learned so much about airbourne bugs in the last 2 years that sometimes these things are sometimes out of our control. Again I am sorry this happened to you.
I cannot comment on the dishes regarding taste. Our menus have dishes that are relatively speaking less tasty / spicy etc than other dishes. Every dish that is made in our kitchen is as authentic as you will get outside of Thailand. Sometimes we as staff love a simple mild dish that does not interfere with our tastebuds:).
On the night you were in there was a boil water notice in Athlone. You were informed of this on the night.
We did take more than the affected dish off your bill and this was explained to you. We could not actually delete the particular dish as the computer would not allow this. We did take the price of the drinks off your bill.
On the night my staff apologised profusely about the bug as they were highly embarrassed. They also asked during and after your meal if apart from that everything was ok. It is a pity that you did not mention anything about the rest of your experience. That was we could address issue on the night and saved you the job of posting on TA to an audience of 000's.

A delicious takeaway from Kin Khao is something to cheer you up during these difficult times. The duck curry in particular is consistently excellent with tender meat and flavorful curry sauce. Kin Khao is a lifesaver these days! thank you to all the staff!
