Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Open even in the middle of winter, when most places like this around here are closed, it is the perfect place to go on a rainy morning in Castletownbere. The cakes are delicious and they also cater for those who can't (or pretend they can't) tolerate gluten. We didn't eat lunch but the lunch menu looked equally good. Highly recommended!

Our family had a selection of cakes - lemon drizzle, hummingbird and chocolate fudge cake. They were all mouth-wateringly delicious indeed. Staff were so friendly, patient and made you feel at home. We highly recommend this lovely cafe!

What a gorgeous place for a break and re-fuel. We popped in for a coffee and had to try some of the beautiful cakes on display. It was so good we got a few slices to take away so we could have more scrumptious treats the next day. If you are in need of a good coffee and a treat, then I highly recommend. Wish I could find somewhere in Dublin with cakes as good !

We were thrilled to find somewhere that serves vegan food and went to this establishment for lunch. We ordered food and we were given our drinks quick enough but after half an hour we asked a waitress if we would be waiting much longer for what was basically two sandwiches. She returned from the kitchen and we were told it would be another ten minutes to which I calmly pointed out that 40 mins was a very long time to wait for lunch. To our dismay a woman whom I can only assume is the owner came storming out of the kitchen and angrily pointed out we hadn’t been waiting for 40 minutes and that she was on her Own in the kitchen and went on to rant about other customers in the restaurant who “forgot” to tell her they were gluten free and if we weren’t happy we could go somewhere else and have our drinks and just not pay for them. We were mortified to be shouted at in front of the whole cafe. As a person who runs a business in hospitality myself I was disgusted at our treatment. There is no excuse for this type of behaviour.

We went to the cafe for lunch yesterday and were left waiting for ages (despite the place not being busy). It got to the stage that after around 10 minutes of waiting for service to come over to ask if we wanted tea/coffee/cake after our mediocre lunch, we decided to leave as the staff were too busy talking to customers they knew in the cafe. The hygiene standards weren’t great in the cafe either, all of the cakes were out with no covers on them and customers/staff standing over them talking. Definitely won’t be returning.

At first we went for tea and cake, it was so good we went back for coffee and cake, and that was just as lovely so we went back again for lunch (which also involved cake!) and that was great too! And so it went on!
When you walk in you'll do a little sigh of pleasure; if only all tea rooms were like this! The selection of perfect cakes, tempting traybakes, cookies, monumental meringues and cheesecake is a delight to behold. Every mouthful was delicious. I don't even like cheesecake but this cheesecake was so good, we came back for more!
Everything is made by them, in their kitchen which is rare now, and so it tastes like cake should be.

When you walk in there's no sign to say please wait to be seated so my husband went up to the counter to ask if there was a table for us, he was rudely told to go back and wait in the hall. While waiting, he overhead staff give out about us. A table of 4 got up to leave while we were waiting. When the waitress came out she said she had no table of 4 for us, looking at the empty table who had just left. Another table overheard and said we are leaving so we could have their table. The waitress said we couldn't have a table for at least 10 minutes and go out and come back later (it was a yellow warning rain storm and we have 2 small kids). As we were leaving another table for 4 were getting up to leave, and a customer behind us asked could we not take that table. My 2 children asked could they stay for some ice-cream. The waitress still said no to go out and come back and they might have a table. We decided to leave and not return, as my husband was upset at overhearing the waitresses give out about us, and I was so embarrassed to be treated like that. I'm not sure if it was because we don't look like we are from area or they just did not want to serve us. Very disappointing and bad customer service.

Hi Bobbi, thank you for taking the time to send us feedback. I’d like to apologise for the way in which you feel you were treated whilst visiting us at the Tea Room. It was a very stormy day when you visited, we were completely booked up throughout the whole day. It is true that upon your arrival we didn’t have a big table free. One table was reserved and the other table were just about to pay their bill. The customer did say he was due to leave but due to crowdedness in the hallway he couldn’t actually get through to pay his bill. Therefore our staff member advised that a table could be ready in about 10 minutes time, once it had been sanitised according to government guidelines and the previous customer had finished their meal/paid their bill.
Unfortunately we don’t have the space to be able to allow customers to wait inside, despite the weather, due to the current restrictions. In normal times this wouldn’t have been a problem of course. We have had to become fairly strict on ensuring customers wait near the government issued signage, visible as soon as you enter the tea room, in order to maintain the correct distancing levels and ensure our customers are kept safe. The signage is bright yellow and I can only apologise if this didn’t appear clearly enough on your visit. We have reviewed this and feel it is very clear what we are asking customers to do to keep themselves and our staff safe, we couldn’t pick a brighter colour.
Whilst not disputing your version of events regarding service , I was personally here that day and did not hear any of my staff “give out” about customers. Nor do I think this would be something they would do considering we rely on custom not just locally but from tourists as well.
We always welcome both tourists and locals and have regular customers that return time and again from all over the world. I therefore cannot accept that any of my staff would discriminate due to you not being from the area. I really hope you do come and visit us again in the future. You could always ring in advance to book a table, that way it would be reserved and ready for you.

I have been to The Tea Room several times for both breakfast and coffee and cake. It is warm and welcoming wirh pleasant smiling staff. Their home made cake selecion is excellent. The breakfast menu is wide and varied, I can recommend their “Hash Brown Special”. It is unusual and very very tasty. The ambience is very relaxing. Well done to owner and staff on your excellent service.

We had a brunch here. The staff were friendly and helpful. I ordered a cheesy ciabatta which, according to the menu, was to be accompanied with crisps and a salad. While the chiabatta was toasted, the cheese was unmelted and cold in the middle, the crisps were crushed, presumably from the bottom of the bag, and there was no sign of the salad. At least the Coke was OK and came with plenty of ice. We also had a slice of cake each and that was excellent - fresh and delicious.

We found this to be a charming little tea rooms, perfect for a spot of breakfast before setting out on the drive to Rosslare for the ferry. We both had avocado toast which was delicious, as were the cakes which were devoured on the journey. The staff were charming as well as efficient, everything you could have wished for.

Stopped off for a light lunch and had the nicest scone I've tasted in years. Was told it was an old recipe which came from a lady in Cornwall. Lovely tea set and delicious cake made this a very enjoyable visit.

I have been traveling throughout Ireland for 4 months, and I have stayed in many hostels and B&Bs, but this is the BEST of the lot. I found it hard to leave this place and always wanted to stay one more night. The staff and the owner are super friendly and the breakfast menu is mega. Unlike every other place, there is an extensive choice of different breakfasts, coffee and teas, and the beds, my god, the beds!! I slept like a baby every night here and I have never experienced such comfort in a bed. All this, and the fact the locals are very friendly and welcoming, make this an amazing place to stay. I will be back soon. Thanks to all the staff! Ryan x

Ate here twice during our stay in castletownbere. First day we just had coffee and homemade cakes, were delicious . We decided to return for lunch following a walk a few days later . Wraps and paninis were very tasty . Of course we had to indulge in the lovely homemade cakes. They all went down a treat, especially the coffee cake . Definitely worth a visit. Small but felt very safe with hand sanitizer at entrance . Staff wore masks. Staff were very pleasant.

We have just had a beautiful brunch, The Tea Room full breakfast and House French Toast. Beautifully presented, tasty food.
The waitresses were prompt, pleasant and COVID precautions were observed.
Thanks for the hard work that goes into creating a lovely way to start the weekend.
