Stayed in the Arch bnb run by the same couple( separate review) Ate there both nights, just had the meat and cheese platters and some wine. Very good selection, nice breads, chutney, and super cheese. Nice layout in the courtyard and tables well distanced. Great wines and advice from Anke, but service was a little haphazard. Excellent hygiene and visor wearing. This place , with the bnb, has great potential, and I wish them well .

We were drawn into this lovely restaurant on our second evening in Clifden, by the very enticing view down the side, and the lovely ambient music. We had a glass of wine or two, and felt fortunate to be able to get a booking for our third and final night. It did not disappoint. Food, atmosphere, service, heat, lighting, wine - it was all perfect. We had smoked salmon, burnt ends of pork belly, hake and fillet steak, and everything was delicious! We are not wine experts, and the lovely Hannah gave us a great recommendation on the first evening that did not break the bank, and she remembered on the next evening what wine we'd had. Clifden is really lovely, but II would come back for the Lamplight alone!

Arriving for the first time in Clifden, in January, I had booked to stay above the restaurant, (The Arch Guesthouse), and had been advised to eat here. Along an outdoor/indoor passage different dining areas are furnished in a mix of interesting and unusual salvaged items ( look for the confessional )! Bench seating topped with sheepskins and chairs. A very nice menu and great wine. A bowl of excellent Olives. Mussels in an excellent, and unusual, sauce with toasted sourdough and a dipping bowl of olive oil and balsamic. A brilliant Cheesecake in a bowl. 2 glasses of house white. In the smoking area 2 coffees and 2 glasses of White Port ( served in Cut Glass tumblers! ) €59. Thank you Ray and staff for a very enjoyable evening. One small negative, most of the Mussels were over cooked.

The atmosphere was great, the staff were pleasant, the wine was tasty, the food was only okay. I first had the potted crab along with two glasses of white wine recommended to me by Hannah who was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, the wine was delicious, I wish I had bought a bottle or written down what it was, I did later send a message to the restaurant Facebook page to ask about it but they read the message and didn't respond. The potted crab was nice enough, served with homemade wheaten bread. Then I ordered bruschetta, it was not nice, I couldn't finish it. It's something I order quite often and so have eaten in many different restaurants including a few in Italy and the version I had here was like none other I've seen. Rather than fresh chopped tomatoes it was a tomato passata/sauce and rather than being served on light grilled crispy white bread it was on dark, heavy, sour, chewy bread, I actually had trouble cutting it until inevitably it got very soggy from the sauce. The sourness of the bread totally overpowered the other flavours and I gave up eating and went back to my (delicious) wine. I wish I had asked about a charcuterie board for one, and I would actually go back, but I would steer clear of the bruschetta.

Excellent food Very poor service We were seated at a small table in a nook, and despite several staff members checking on us during the night the service was extremely slow. Waiting over half an hour for starters & an hour for mains. The waitress took the wrong order for main course for me so I was served the wrong dinner. As it was late I accepted the dish which was delicious. The starters: rainbow carrots & goats cheese salad were delicious Our mains were smoked mackerel & the pollock on noddles (I’d ordered the risotto. No dessert as last desert was sold before we could order. Food & wine were tasty so I’m hoping it was a bad night from service and hope to return.

Whilst it was out of season when we visited, we should have been told that we would be waiting for nearly an hour before the food arrived. When it eventually arrived, it was awful. We opted for the beef which was one of three options. The beef was inedible although the vegetables were nice. In fairness my wife and I are foodies and appreciate good fayre, but this place should be avoided at all cost. Talking of which….€19.50 each for food we couldn’t eat was terrible value. Folks, if you can’t provide good food or even good service in down season then don’t stay open, you are damaging your brand.

AVOID My husband and I were here for two nights for my 50th Birthday. No hot water in shower for two days. No hot cooked breakfast on one morning. No bulbs in any light fittings. When I asked to move rooms I was told that a plumber was coming out to resolve issue only to be informed that night after 7pm on a Saturday night that the issue could not be resolved and that these things happen. I am a sea swimmer and had a party to attend could not wash my hair or shower for 48 hours. Received a complementary pint of beer each! Manager absolutely DID NOT WANT to know. Would not consider a refund or credit for our stay. Felt so disappointed and disrespected that in a first world country Lamplights management can get away with this. Had tapas on the Friday when we arrived and it was expensive however in fairness the potatoes and garlic sauce and Mac and cheese were tasty. Absolutely shocked by the attitude towards me about having to endure no hot shower for 48 hours.

Small, cosy, quirky, this is a great place for those who enjoy wine and are happy eating simple but very tasty dishes. Not for those wanting a full dinner experience, it is laid back, knowledgeable and assured in a simple way. The smoker gives the food a wonderful flavour and keeps it succulent. The smoked chicken supreme with pea puree and the lightest blue cheese bon bons ever, was finished with a morel sauce and enjoyed with a fabulous Gruner Veltliner. Lots of carefully chosen wines to buy from the little wine shop at the front. Genial Ray was very welcoming and the team deserve success with their venture.

Discovered this little gem on my last trip to Clifden. A small, cosy wine bar (which is well stocked and perfect for people watching if that’s your thing) doesn’t give much clue to the charmingly quirky restaurant to be found along the cobbled alleyway to the side of bar. A mix of outdoor and indoor seating is available and the decor of both is just effortlessly cool. The menu was an eclectic mix, but something for most tastes, all of which were designed and prepared by a chef clearly on his game. Add in the friendly and welcoming service and excellent value for money and Cliden’s onto a winner!

This was my second visit. There were five of us dining and the food was delicious. Each of us chose differently from the menu and were not disappointed. The wine list has a good choice. Service was a little slow, which seems to be a common theme with restaurants since opening up after Covid. Some avoidable hiccups that were avoidable as they related to internal communications. However, overall, we had a great experience and I look forward to further visits.

Very happy to happen upon this cosy tapas restaurant. Great choice of local foods. Our young server was delightful and very kindly went through the menu offering advice and recommendations. She is a wonderful host and most accommodating. The ambiance is warm and the restaurant has a cool vibe. Will definitely recommend and return.

Made sure we booked a table for this restaurant. Small plates make a very interesting meal, we had 4 plates between the 2 of us - belly pork, prawns, zucchini and tomato and barrata. May have managed a 5th plate but we had dessert as they looked really good so we indulged in those. Approx 100 euros which included a carafe of wine. It’s quite intimate and has an appeal.

..the best chowder we have tasted in Connemara, accompanied by mackerel pate and a glass of Prosecco with bitters..not to be missed on any trip to Clifden. A splendid and unusually varied, good quality wine list, at very reasonable prices. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Hannah was a welcoming helpful hostess.

I stayed in the Lamplight B&B for one night as i was attending a social occasion elsewhere in town. I got a great rate so i was delighted to be in the centre of Clifden. I was greeted by Ivan, who made me feel most welcome. As I said, The lamplight is perfectly situated in the centre of Clifden, therefore in walking distance of all amenities. It is also great value, considering it's location. I have to say I had a great night sleep. The room was clean and cosy. I had an ensuite room, fresh clean towels, a bottle water, a TV, everything I needed for my stay. I didn't dine here this time, however I know from eating here on other occasions that the food is exceptional! There is a wonderful atmosphere and aroma of the wonderful food they serve in the restaurant, where you have a choice to sit inside or in the courtyard (which is covered in and has heatlamps, so you will be nice and toasty) , which brings a lovely holiday vibe to it. The lamplight has a great menu to suit all tastes and budgets. If you are looking for a light bite or something more substantial, such as brunch , tapas or an eclectic choice of mains , you won't know what to order (for the right reasons) A wonderful wine menu too for the wine connoisseur. So if you are a foodie, you won't be disappointed. I would highly recommend the lamplight for a break and be sure to stay for dinner too!

THANK YOU, NILS! I popped in for bite, but the kitchen was closed. A young man named Nils was in charge, and he recommended a croissant and coffee. Absolutely delicious, and he pulled a cappuccino like a veteran Italian barista. I was a lone traveler, but Nils made me quite comfortable with some great casual conversation. We traded stories of our favorite Netflix shows, and he informed me about the educational system in Ireland and his future academic hopes and plans. The boy has a bright future ahead, whether pulling coffee or designing the world's next architectural wonder. Thank you for your time, Nils. And best of luck in your future!
