Walking the streets of Kinsaqle we came upon this venue. What a stroke of luck. Firdtly, they have a fantastic floor in then dining room. You can lose yourself in the deep rich red gloss of the floorboards. Decoration is great too, subtle, with local art on display. Service: as good as you'd want. Food: even better. Win e: simple list but covers all that you would want. Value for money: not an issue; worth every euro. The oswer is more than ably assisted front of house and even more so in the kitchen where here husband is the chef. Seriously, food this good is a rarity. Langousitnes to start for me. Smoked Makerel for my partner.Turbot & Scallops for my main. He had the pan fried Cod. Finished off with Irish cheeses for me and true vanilla ice cream going his way. All just so well cooked, presented, sereved and consumed. If I didn't live in London I'd be here at least once a week. I really recommend this place (even with the owner's 'talking' border collie / husky cross dog (who apparantly also goes to school)). Loved it!!

Had a great meal with family last evening. I had languoistines to start which were delicious. Monkfish was so well cooked served with green beans. Family members had brie and hake which they reported were delicious also. Both waitresses were attentive without being intrusive and were very knowledgeable about the menu.

When I first opened the menu I was a little shocked at the prices but because it was quite late we had no other options. Having said that, the food was outstanding. I had the Hake and she had the monkfish and they were cooked to perfecyion. One of the nicest meals I've ever had. Service was great too. The waitress couldn't do enough for us

There's nothing that will sour your evening more than someone just being plain rude to you, when you are out for a pleasant evening on your holidays. I don't know if the woman in question is the owner or manager or what but she appeared to be the most senior person dealing with customers. When asked a simple question about the menu, she jumped down my throat, then stood over me and shouted at me. It was extremely intimidating and totally unnecessary. We hadn't done anything, we hadn't complained or given out - just asked a question. I was so upset by the experience that I actually started to cry when she left the table. Stupidly, we stayed in the restaurant when actually we should've gotten up and walked out. Especially, as on arrival, we had already been left standing for at least 5 minutes in the doorway with no member of staff at all acknowledging our presence. Anyway, we stayed and had an ok meal - not amazing, just ok. I've now noticed several other reviews on here commenting on a rude staff member - presumably same one. I've also seen some fairly caustic responses. However, we can't all be wrong can we..........

You were greeted warmly and shown to your table, you left table to go to ladies, you returned to table and shouted across the restaurant demanding menus, you were politely told that we were just waiting for you to return to table to give menus, end of conversation, no caustic reply just facts, On a normal day we would be upset about reviews like this and take it very personally as rankings on forums like this really influence business in a small town with lots of establishments, but in a year of covid and other things I really don't get why venting on forums do it for people when there is more to life and other solutions. I think the positives out weigh the negatives here we wished you would have left as well.

We went to Max’s restaurant twice during our four night stay in Kinsale - the food is absolutely amazing! Everything we ordered was so flavoursome and the fish (we had monkfish and haddock) were cooked to perfection. The chef’s wife does front of house and was so friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed with just the right level of noise. This was definitely the best meal we had in Kinsale.

Good but not great. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic, the decor was eclectic and simple. The menu was a two course prefix only, a starter and a main, with no other options. My preference would have been to order three starters! Despite butter sitting on the table we were never served bread and the wine started to hit us before the first course arrived. I ordered the Brie en croûte which was eggroll style, the same kind of pastry that would use. The waitress looked abashed when I had to ask for bread for my hot, gooey Brie . For my main course I ordered the monkfish which was very good, however the sauce was a bit fishy. He ordered the scallop starter which was delicious, and the Seabass for his main which was very good. We had a bottle of an Albariño wine which was a perfect accompaniment for the fish. And we were able to order a dessert - sticky toffee pudding, my favorite! The wine list was varied and reasonable

We were recommended this restaurant by our family with similar tastes to us and it proved a great choice. The restaurant is lovely and relaxed with the friendliest service you can as for.The two course menu is great value at 42 euro ( with supplements for certain dishes). It is primarily a seafood restaurant and the dishes were top notch nicely accompanied by a nice bottle of Albariño. I could have had any of the choices on the menu and would go back in a heartbeat. Two courses was enough for the four of us but we managed to squeeze in a dessert shared between us.

Highlight of a wet and dreary day in Kinsale was our meal in Max’s. We had booked on the evening before and we like to have an evening meal fairly early so the numbers in the restaurant were fairly low when we arrived. It gradually filled up during our time there but it’s not the sort of place you’d have any worries about being too close to other diners- even before the pandemic. So no worries on that and there are other COVID precautions being implemented. Of course the reason we were there was for the food. The menu is fish biased and though I’m not a massive fish eater there was plenty on the menu for the likes of me to choose from. Decisions made we enjoyed starters and we both had Hake as main. I’d a sweet and we both had coffee. Everything was very tasty, presented well and we enjoyed our evening in Max’s. It was indeed as good as our previous visit so there’s obviously a continuous high standard of food served here. We’ll make it a regular visit each time we are in Kinsale- 100% recommend

The restaurant is pleasant with well spaced tables and a family atmosphere. There were clearly several local regulars in who knew the staff. Service was well paced and the dinner options varied. Portion sizes were “frugal” especially the cheese board. It is fair to say you got just a taste of each cheese with a hint of chutney (it was so small I missed it on the plate until the waiter pointed it out to me!) Presentation of my main meal (scallops) was messy and a bit over salted for my taste but everything else was good. But these are minor criticisms compared to the overall experience. It wouldn’t put me off returning.

My partner and I always love to eat at Max’s when visiting Kinsale. We were unable to book in advance, but fortunately we were very lucky to get a cancellation on the day we arrived in Kinsale. Ann Marie is so welcoming and an amazing host, making the whole dining experience an absolute pleasure. The food is superb. I had the sautéed squid and prawns, followed by the fillet of Hake, and my partner had the pan fried langoustines, followed by pan fried John Dory and Monkfish. Both courses were absolutely delicious. Ann Marie was super kind in letting us sample a wine to accompany our meal before we made our decision. Plus, we had dessert, with two unbelievably amazing dessert wines; I loved the chilled Cahors Château du Cèdre Malbec! Max’s restaurant is one of the best in Ireland - and I can’t wait to return!

An absolute must visit of kinsale. The ambiance and atmosphere of this place is just perfect. From the second you walk in there is such a welcoming and calming feel. The food is absolutely delicious. Limited menu but from, someone who’s a pretty fussy eater, I just found the food so delicious and tasty. This place is the reason I want to come back to kinsale. Well done.

Stumbled across Max's whilst wandering the back streets of Kinsale. We didn't have a reservation but were offered a table in their quaint courtyard out the back. This really enhanced what became a beautifully prepared dinner. We were made so welcome and learned it was a family run restaurant. After a bit of banter, I was even invited to feed their pet fish in the courtyard. Recommend for couples, friends or a family meal out. Mussels followed by Hake is my recommendation however, their mackerel starter followed by haddock is delicious. Absolutely Worth a visit. Highly recommended.

Ate here on Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised. We were attended to quickly and had an aperitif before dinner. Our wine order was incorrect but that was quickly amended (to our advantage). I had monkfish which was perfect with a hint of orange through it. Yummy. I followed this with the cheese board which was spot on. I think the dessert menu could do with a bit more variety as two ice cream dishes is not ideal and the chocolate dishes were not too appealing. That said the service was unobtrusive and staff were lovely. Great place and worth a visit.

We were very disappointed with this restaurant, having been drawn by it’s Michelin associations. Very little on the plate for the price. I had lamb cutlets that were accompanied by a pile of curry flavoured chick peas…completely smothering the taste of the lamb. The menu in general was not very inspiring. Surprised that waiting staff were dressed casually in jeans etc and did not seem very knowledgeble about wines on offer. Wish we had gone somewhere else.

We had a lovely meal here on the recommendation of our hotel (Perryville House). We were warmly welcomed and well served by Anne Marie, the co-owner, and well fed by her husband and business partner, Chef, Olivier. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the atmosphere congenial. I would highly recommend eating at Max's
