Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I think the ratings here are slightly off. The food we had here was very average. Now I don't particularly like writing reviews saying this because I really liked the pub, awesome atmosphere and great friendly people. For starters we had black pudding fritters, chicken...wings and caesar sald. The blackpudding fritters were nice but just 3 small deep fried black pudding balls. The salad came on a side plate and was a couple of lettuce leaves with some chicken thrown on top. To give credit the chicken wings were pretty great would recommend those. For mains it was lamb tagine and the steak. The tagine was just odd, the spices didn't taste cooked and the lamb tasted like pulled lamb that was added as an afterthought. This with dry couscous randomly placed in the bowl. The steak also came with mash that had raw garlic in it. It was all just very average and not really worth what I paid for it. Now fair enough maybe the Sunday roast is where these guys shine. Maybe if its not Sunday just grab a pint and enjoy the atmosphere.More

Mountain House is a superb Venue. We had Sunday lunch which was absolutely fantastic. Great selection for everyone. There was a gluten intolerant member in our group and nearly everything on the menu was available to them, (with a small tweak). For that reason alone...we'd be back. However there are several other reasons to make a return to this gem, the staff were so nice, efficient and put you under no pressure to hurry your meal. The food is excellent, generous portions and great value. It truly was one of the nicest meals we'd had in a while.More

Wonderful.to the chef , best rare steak and perfectly cooked seafood. I’ve had for a long time. Service by Dan was perfect. Their service to the local community is as good, they drop dinners down to local elderly residents that live alone. The family farm...surrounds the pub - ie the provinence is local as you can get .More

Had a stunning meal with a group of friends for a 40th birthday. All the food was fantastic and there was a great selection on the menu. The coffee pinotage on the wine menu is spectacular too. Great food. Great staff. Great time.

We went here on a whim for a birthday dinner for two. It was already dark, and the appearance from outside was not very encouraging. When we walked in it seemed like nothing more than your standard village pub. However the greeting was friendly, and...we were shown through to the restaurant section. The word quaint could have been coined for this room, especially with the festive-season decorations in place, and we loved the atmosphere. Service was friendly and attentive. My steak was not the best I've ever eaten, but it was a long way from the worst and I'd have it again. The surprise was the prawn curry, ordered with some trepidation. We come from a city with arguably the broadest range of Indian cuisine in the world, and where prawn curry is a speciality. Until now, we have despaired of finding a curry of any distinction in Ireland, outside of specialist Indian restaurants. We found it here, flavourful and spicy, with prawns not overcooked and soggy as they so often are. A delight. Desserts were excellent, service was attentive and friendly, and the wine list adequate. We'll be backMore

The food was delicious and came out with no delay. Service was SO friendly and nice. Loved the Lamb Shank but star of the show was the Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble — incredible flavors and lovely presentation. Mags took our order and she is a real...sweetheart, but the whole team is wonderful and the meal was just a pleasure.More

I’ve reviewed The Mountain House before and had good things to say about the excellent food, service, and staff. I now want to say that if you happen to be in the vicinity on one of their ‘Pizza Nights’ (usually Bank Holidays but not always),...be sure to get yourself up there. They’re great pizzas - lovely thin crispy base and a range of toppings. I like the pepperoni plus mushrooms and blue cheese, but you can design yours to your taste. The spacious garden is an ideal spot for families to enjoy sharing pizzas or you can eat in the cosy pub with a drink. If you’d prefer to have a pizza party at home, you can call in and have a beer while you wait to collect the piping hot pizzas in their boxes. Whichever option takes your fancy, take my word for it, you won’t be disappointed.More

I was in town to visit family from California and we decided to visit after reading their excellent web site and online reviews. After one meal and a night out drinking with the locals.......I'm hooked! This is the kind of place you hear about in...Ireland where the locals are welcoming, the beer is cold, the food is amazing, and the `craic`is off the charts, it had it all! The menu is small(less is definitely more here), fresh and focused, we devoured several of the appetizers to start with. I can still remember every bite, the flavors exploding in my mouth, every taste better than the last. I had the freshest and tastiest clam chowder in my life here, it had 4 or 5 large size shrimp in there, you NEVER get that in the states, ever! The tender steak was cooked to perfection with delicious hand cut fries and fresh veg. Dessert was a warm fudge brownie and ice cream to round off one of the funnest evenings served in their warm and cozy dining room annex. After the meal we stepped into the crowded bar and had a drink with several of the patrons who welcomed this `yank` with open arms, and made me feel like one of the locals in no time at all. From top down this place is extremely well organized. From the well laid out and extremely informative web site, to the friendly and attentive staff, the cleanliness, the parking, this place had it all. If you find yourself in West Cork, do yourself a favor and make the spectacular and scenic drive to visit the Mountain House......I guarantee you won't regret it!More
