Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at the Talbot Hotel for two nights, then two nights at another hotel for a family wedding. The Talbot was the better stay, for sure. While at the Talbot Hotel, we had the convenience of walking downstairs to the Talbot Seafood Bar &...Restaurant for dinner and drinks. This was convenient during the rainy October weather. We also came to dinner here one on the non-wedding night. Over the past decade during trips to visit family in Belmullet we have made the Talbot Restaurant our dinner location of choice, and we were not disappointed this year. The food is excellent, the drinks good, and service and staff very friendly. Special thanks to Brian the bartender, who is a wonderful gent and great to talk about football with, especially EPL. I watched several EPL matches there and enjoyed several Guinnesses with his friendly input on the games (YNWA). Our food choices included the burgers, panini sandwiches, fish specials, some wings, and each time bowls of the seafood chowder (absolutely amazingly good), All dinners were fantastic and the Talbot Bar and Restaurant is worth visiting if you are staying at the hotel or anywhere in town. We highly recommend this bar & restaurant.More

Throughly disappointing despite being rated quite highly on TripAdvisor. Our waitress was very nice but we felt she could have handled the situation better or escalated it to a manager. To start we had Mozarella dippers which should have come with a sauce but didn't....The BBQ wings were bland, lukewarm and stuck together as if they had been microwaved. We asked for side plates and never received those either. My friend and I both had the sea bass for mains which in actuality was half a fillet each, the cost per portion was extortionate at €18.90. I am understanding of the fact that prices have increased across the board but the portions were very tight. The mash was the star of the dish however the carrots were a disgrace, stone cold, crusty and nearly brown. Our other friend had the prawn and chorizo pasta which was fairly bland and again tight on the prawns and chorizo. We wanted to give the staff the opportunity to rectify the mistakes given the fact that two of us work in the service industry however no one came down at any point to ask how the meal was. It was busy but not packed, there were plenty of staff on the floor. Once our waitress came back to clear the dishes we highlighted our disappointment. She apologised and offered us dessert menus but not before asking if Tommy, who seemed like a manager, could change a light bulb that was directly over us. Why this was suddenly so urgent was questionable but much more so was Tommy's reaction when we attempted to discuss our disappointing experience at the bar. After we complained our waitress disappeared and as Tommy was focusing on changing the light bulb we sat up at the bar to finish our wine. We waited for the waitress to come back but it became clear she was avoiding us. Given the situation I couldn't entirely blame her. We tried to get someone's attention at the bar without success for quite a while before a nice young barman came down. We received the bill and explained that we had tried to give them an opportunity to rectify the situation and would be leaving a poor review. We would never do so without first trying to fix the situation as I know myself from working in customer service it's unfair. In fairness he tried to help as best as he could and went to discuss the situation with Tommy. The young barman was then sent back to apologise and offer a 15% discount. We explained this wasn't the point but appreciated his effort and left the remainder as a tip. Only at that point did the senior barman, Tommy, come over and say a brief sorry. I felt the staff were badly let down by a lack of management and an outright refusal by senior staff to address customers directly. The nice young staff need guidance and the chef needs to pull up his or her socks majorly.More

Tasty food, friendly and welcoming staff but incredibly slow. Half our food arrived and the children were so hungry by that point that they began to eat without waiting for everyone else’s or even plates to split their pizza on to. We had to request...plates, and had to ask 3 times for glasses of water before they arrived. Unfortunate as the staff really did make us feel welcome but their efficiency needs improvement.More

My previous experiences of Talbots Seafood Bar were always positive but on this occasion most definitely not. My main course was the most expensive item on the menu, the Seafood Platter. All six crab claws on the plate were utterly devoid of crab meat and...the 'prawns' consisted of tiny little shrimps hardly worth eating. Most of the bulk on the plate came from two large pieces of traditional soda bread.More

On our recent trip to Belmullet I checked to see which restaurant we should visit and it seemed like The Talbot was the best bet. We were seated in the bar area which I think doubles as a niteclub. It was very busy but we...were served quickly and the staff were nice. My husband had the goats cheese salad which was quite average and I had fishcakes that were made up of mostly potato. I asked the waiter if I could have mash instead of chips and he said he'd have to charge me extra. I thought this was poor form. I didn't ask to change my whole order, just to switch sides. Particularly at almost €17. I don't think we'd return.More

We had our evening meal here one night during our stay in Belmullet. We were seated in a large room at the back which initially appeared quite quiet but quickly filled with with other diners. Booked a table following local advice. The staff were friendly and professional and the setting was nice. The starter for us both was good, tasty. However the main course was poor. We both chose the pan fried seabass. The fish was OK, slightly overcooked but...the accompanying potatoes and vegetables were extremely disappointing. The mash was dry and lumpy with no seasoning or flavour. The cauliflower was overcooked and bland. The carrots were the worst, cold and dried out, almost a brown skin on them. It would have taken only a little care and effort to make the vegetables presentable and tasty, some butter and herb garnish. Similarly, the mash potatoes should be a meal on its own, creamy and smooth. Very disappointing.More

This restaurant was highly recommend to us by our hosts. There was a good atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. I ordered the seafood special which was sea trout. The fish was beautiful but the portion was extremely small. I did point it this...and was offered an extra portion which came well after I had finished my meal. One of my colleagues ordered fish and chips which the menu stated was served with a special homemade tartare sauce. The cod arrived minus the homemade tarter sauce and when we enquired we were directed to the packet of tarter sauce on the table. We were later told that the homemade tarter sauce was taken off the menu ‘ so that the kitchen would have one less thing to make’. The rest of the food was good and I loved my Seafood chowder. It certainly is on the higher end price wise particularly for the starters A very popular place but I felt there were a few unnecessary slip ups. Martin DelaneyMore
