A thoroughly enjoyable dinner, with beautifully presented and tasty food. The staff were very helpful and easily accommodated the ‘sans gluten’ requirements (coeliac). We booked - and were glad we did.

We were visiting from America and working out at a gym next door to L’Avocette during our visit to Royan, passing the restaurant daily. It looked like such a good French restaurant I was determined to try it. We stopped in one day at lunch...without reservation. We were told, via French Sign Language, that it is impossible to come without a reservation. The next day we called during open hours to be greeted by a voice message that we didn’t understand as we don’t speak French, but couldn’t leave a message for a reservation. The next day, after the gym we went to make a reservation in person. The proprietor lady took our reservation for three days later. We arrive on time for our reservation. The proprietor rushed us to take our order though we are slow in deciphering the menu as it is in French and she didn’t speak English. We asked for one Menu of the day and told her that we wanted to split it in additional to other items. We have small appetites and have learned that in France, cannot comfortably consume 2 le menus. She was incredulous that we wanted to split a prie fix menu and said she wouldn’t allow it. Her haughtiness left such a bad taste in my mouth, my husband and I decided to leave. I was heartbroken because I really wanted to try this place and believe the reviews of how beautiful the food is. But the personality of The proprietress made the experience distasteful and a barrier for us. In sure she felt relieved to be rid of us. It is her business and her choice, but I am left with sadness. She felt like a bully. In our 3 week travels in France, she was the only unpleasant person we met. Even the Parisians we crossed paths with were gracious and kind.More
Tried to walk in on the Sat 25th August, no chance fully booked so reserved a table for the Sunday evening and wasn't dissapointed. Location away from the busy front about 10 min walk from the tourism office on the front. Had three courses the...food and display on the plate was superb asked for my fillet steak medium and it was just right, I explained that my wife didn't eat meat and the proprietor pointed to the Dorado fish dish which again displayed and tasted great. Good wine choice started with an apperitif and ended on a special coffee cost reasonable I think we paid 119 euros all in. Staff were very helpful I asked what the cheeses from the cheese board were and the waiter wrote them down for me worth a visit if you fancy a nice evening out or romantic if a couple but book in advance especially at the weekend.More
Happened to see this restaurant as we drove past. Fabulous food, very good service and a pleasant atmosphere.. Highly recommended.
Creative, unusual and very well judged meal. Everything was superb. We went just before 8 p.m. and there were still a few tables available on the terrace, but it soon filled up. We settled for the 24€ menu, choosing the tuna croquettes and chicken wraps...for starters, the lamb and sea bream for main courses and the cheese board and chocolate mousse for dessert: everything was delicious. The service was also very good and friendly. Altogether a lovely evening.More
I have been to this restaurant for lunch three times this year. Excellent every time. I have tried to make a last minute booking for dinner on several occasions but unsuccessfully. Such is the popularity of this restaurant. Food is beautifully cooked and presented. Service...is friendly. Lunchtimes are quieter and I would say that a reservation is not necessary for lunch. I have not taken wine here so do not know the wine list. The restaurant has an outdoor dining area which is perfect in the warmer weather. Situation is near the railway station and so a little out of the town centre. Parking would be on the street or in a town car park three minutes walk away. Highly recommended. You should be prepared to speak French because the staff do not appear to speak English, although I think they do understand some.More
L'Avocette is situated by the stade, a little way back from the sea front and the main shopping streets, but it is well worth finding. We went in during the day to book for the evening; lunch service was full. In the evening the retaurant...and the terrace were both full.... with local french people rather than tourists. All good signs that proved to be right. The service was excellent and friendly, as was all of the food we selected from the Escapade Menu. The prices are also very reasonable and all in all great value and I would rate as the best restaurant we ate in whilst in Royan.More
My wife and I are lucky to live not far from L'Avocette and have been going there regularly since it first opened. The food, service and atmosphere are consistently excellent and the prices are fair and reasonable especially given the high standards that Isabelle, Laurent...and Jeremy maintain. Of the family and friends we have taken over the years not a single one has been disappointed and all ask to return every time they visit us. If L'Avocette was in London or Paris there would be a four month waiting list to reserve and the prices would be four times as high.More
We've eaten here several times and the quality of the food is always very good. You can eat at lunch time for €16, 2 courses and coffee so it's very reasonable and the wine is excellent too. So much better than most of the 'tourist...restaurants' along the front. Go, you wont be disappointed!More
Another excellent recommendation from our great hotel. After an awful meal last night on the front our hotel recommended this excellent Resteraunt we would go here again beautifully balanced portions and creative local food
The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the food is very good and reasonably priced with fantastic wine as you would expect
Unexpected find near the language centre and only a short stroll from town centre. Good foie gras(home done) nice veal with an over salty cheese creme brulee accompagniment, and a plate of childhood flavours for desert which ticked all boxes(except dentists!) Decent and correctly priced...wine list with pertinent advice. Overall a rare joy for a seaside resortMore
The staff were welcoming and helpful, the food is very good and reasonably priced with some interesting new dishes to us (the melon granita was delicious) making it a very pleasant evening for us. With a choice of set menus there's something here for everyone.
According to the reviews, and by French standards in general, we were rather disappointed. Had the menu découverte, with the foie gras rather bland and not with a good texture, then the beef cheek (good, but not outstanding) and the cheese platter (only good as...well). Service was mixed. With the cheese, they had raisins and nuts, but we were not offered them?! Out of 3 dinners in Southwestern France, it was the poorest. In Royan, which probably does not have a lot to offer, it was OK though.More
The plus is the quality and the place is crammed so you have to book. Very inventive meal, excellent flavours and priced exactly right. On the down side the tables are very close, as is generally the norm in France, so a feeling of intimacy...is not on the menu. The service is efficient and friendly enough but as they are only two and a full restaurant, there's not a lot of time wasted at the table. We ate there on a Sunday lunchtime and were very happy with the food, I have eaten in a lot of restaurants in Royan and this is up there at the top. Easy parking as it is near the station.More
