We wanted to try the „smoked beer”, the speciality of Bamberg. The building is itself old, very famous and popular, so there were too many guests. We sat down in the beergarden and shared our table with others. We had to wait for a long...time and the waiter wasn’t very polite, but it was O.K. The Rauchbier was unusual, fine. We have never tasted anything like this before. It was a good experience, it’s worth a visit.More

Went here for lunch yesterday, and of course it was very busy. We sat down at one of the few empty tables, and I asked a passing waiter if I could please have a menu. He looked me straight in the face and shouted back...at me that they were very busy and were working very hard - and walked on. I could see that! I didn’t see my request to ask for a menu in a restaurant as unreasonable. For some reason, possibly a bit shocked, we actually stayed, and didn’t immediately leave. The lunch was ok. I used to live in Germany, and this attitude was unusual. It did, of course, spoil my lunch, and this waiter continued to serve us, without any flicker of admission of rudeness whatsoever. There are many restaurants in Bamburg, choose another and have a more pleasant experience.More

I cannot complain about our reservation or the service. We were three, however none of us liked the famous Rauchbier, since no alternatives were available we paid our unfinished drinks and left. Just a matter of taste.

Smoky beer was top notch! Never tasted anything like that before. Atmosphere felt like you were drinking in the Hobbits home. Food was one of the best German meals of whole trip. Get the onion stuffed with meat and gravy!

My German friends took me to Schlenkerla to try the "smoked ham" beer. They said people either love it or hate it. You can now count me in the latter group. It took me quite a while to nurse this beer to completion, but it...was a heck of a time enjoying the sun and camaraderie on a cold April's day. Schlenkerla is quite famous for this strange tasting beer and it is certainly an experience for Americans to openly drink beer on the city street. I highly recommend giving it a try. Or try getting a table in the restaurant if you can.More

We were on a motorcycle trip in Bamberg and decided to try the local beer speciality. The Rauchbier is unique and tasty. Beer lovers really need to try one of these! The restaurant itself is located in an old monastery. During summer you could sit...outside drinking your beer whilst enjoying the sun. Very delightful!More

We stopped here for lunch and the smoked beer. The place is huge with a bunch of smaller rooms for dining. The servers were very nice. We tried the traditional dark beer and a wheat. They were both great, but I recommend the traditional dark....For lunch we had the Bamber onion. I highly recommend it. It's kind of like a meatloaf stuffed in an onion with gravy. It was delicious. Great atmosphere too.More

We stopped here during a brief walking tour of Bamberg. This is apparently the oldest beer hall in Bamberg. The smoked beer is worth a try, but is really nothing special. You will find a lot of people gathered here, including outside in the narrow...street.It's a nice touristy thing to do, but you will find better places to spend your money as you walk through Bamberg.More

Visited as part of the BierSchmecker brewery trail offered by the tourism office (24€ gets you four vouchers for beers at local breweries, including this one). We got the smoked beer (interesting flavor, worth it for the experience if nothing else) and when it came...time for the bill we handed the server the vouchers. He would not accept them as payment for the drinks. We tried to explain and showed him the brochure from the tourist office. His reply - “Not my problem.” We ended up paying for the beers. We had been to a different participating brewery without issue. This put a sour mood to the rest of our evening to say the least. We plan on letting the tourism office know as wellMore

Amazing traditional German (Bamberg) food. They have many tips of beer produced in house. A very special one dark. In the center of the city, very history place. Need to be booked because is really busy restaurant. I was there on Tuesday and was 100%...full.More

When in Bamberg for the city walking tour we were told about this pub with smoked beer. A friend I met on the river cruise joined me and it certainly was different. Not bad and I could get used to it. The atmosphere though was...so dark and unappealing. We were warned by our guide that service will be gruff which it was.More

I love this brewery, I have been here numerous times, and in my opinion Schlenkerla is one of the best beers in the world. However … We sat in the little courtyard (Beer Garten) and ordered some beers. I then saw that my favourite Weisswurst...was on the menu. The waitress walked past me and took an order from another table. On her way back ordered the Weisswurst, but was told they weren’t available because it was past midday. On my iPhone it was just 12.00. The loud adjacent cathedral clock had not completed ringing 12. But no Weisswurst for me! A few minutes later the waitress walked past us with the orders she had taken seconds before mine on the other table, needless to say it included Weisswursts!!! I regularly travel to Bamberg, and know that this item is a Bavarian breakfast dish and only sold in the morning. However, this waitress’s behaviour was deliberately rude, unnecessary, and designed to annoy foreign tourists. It was an appalling advert, to those I had taken with me for Schlenkerla, Bamberg or Bavaria.More
