My family have been coming to Chateau la Coste since it opened. This year we were particularly excited as a friend had an exhibition and new sculpture. As usual the Art walk was fantastic. Despite being midweek (Wed 5Aug), and the virus, the place was...very busy. We booked the Tadao Ando at 1pm on the terrace, left hand side just after the door. The waiter was off from the start but also working in hospitality we cut some slack to staff when very busy. The waiter, about 170cm tall, dark hair- longish over short sides, stubble/light beard, asked us for our order starters first. We didn’t want any starters which seemed to confuse him, and ordered four entrecotes and two child meals. My wife asked if she could swap the potatoes for salad and he said: “It comes with salad, just don’t eat the potatoes” It was rude but we let it pass. Our steaks arrived and there was some confusion as to which was medium-rare and which was medium. In the end only one was medium rare and given to the wrong person. Tasted good so we didn’t say anything. My son had nearly finished eating his chicken when I noticed the center of the leg was red. We pointed it out to the waiter he said “It’s fine you should have told me before , I would have brought you another”, we tried to protest that we didn’t know before but he said the same thing again. No sorry, didn’t say he’d mention it to the chef, didn’t offer to comp a coffee, nothing. This was well below the experience we’ve come to enjoy there and expect for relatively simple food at that price point. Though we understand mistakes happen it is inexcusable not to at least apologise to the guests when they are unhappy and try and accommodate them where you can. This also falls back on the management to make sure they are adequately staffed for the number of bookings they take and the staff have the proper training for interacting with customers.More
