From the outside we were not sure if this place was open or serving food. When we went inside we got a warm welcome from the young waiter who showed us to a table took our contact details and drinks order all socially distanced and face masked. Prices on the menu seemed very reasonable but we took the waiters recommendation and had the chowder and the pan fried hake. We were suitably impressed when they arrived as the chowder had a lot of prawns and other fish and was delicious. The hake was on a bed of mash and greens including asparagus and surrounded by mussels. The presentation and flavours would do credit to a Michelin star restaurant! Looking at 2019 reviews I think this bar/restaurant is now at a completely new level and deserves great support. We will be back!!

We had very good food here after being to visit hook lighthouse & duncannon fort. Service was good. Good physical distancing in place. Good sanitation practices in place. €3 for small curry dip for a child was a little bit steep but overall a good experience

I ate here twice with my wife during a recent stay in Duncannon. The first night, a Tuesday, was the better experience. The food was good quality, nicely cooked and tasty, especially the catch of the day which was Hake. The next night, a Friday, was less pleasing. Again the quality of the food was not at issue, although my wife's order of prawns in a garlic sauce seemed to be bare cooked prawns for the most part served with a bowl of dry boiled white rice, not what she was led to believe it would be from the menu. My own Thai Green Curry with prawns was good, however, it did not include monkfish as was billed - the waiter told me that they hadn't any, but I was still charged for it. I let it go due to the staff who were young, but helpful friendly and courteous, so I decided to let that one slide. I found matters very pricey here at present. The food is good, as said, but is overpriced by comparison with similar places. Factors here may be recent close down losses due to Covid -19 and the fact that they are one of only two operating eateries in Duncannon. Whatever the case, it's not reason enough to justify what I found were hefty prices.

I visited this restaurant with my family after checking online that they have vegan options due to my 5 year old having allergies to dairy and egg. On arrival a couple had just left and their meal remains were still on the table. My husband went inside to let the staff know we were sitting outside and to get menus. When a staff member came to take our order he asked what we wanted and I had to ask him to clear and sanitise the table before taking our order. The vegan option for my 5 year old was a stir fry or chips, these were the only options. She wouldn't eat a stir fry and chips is a very poor meal option. We said she'd be happy with a baby bowl which we were told there's dairy in it but how hard is it to boil, steam or bake a potato and some vegetables?! My husband and sons meal were average and my vegetarian pasta was overcooked. The service was very poor and very slow. I had to get my daughter food elsewhere. It's disgraceful that children with allergies can't be catered for with as basic a meal as a plain potato and any vegetables in a restaurant.

We visited Roches recently for an evening meal and some drinks. A very nice young waiter came to take our order and we requested the fish and chips. We asked if there was anything else being served with the dish and we were told salad. We asked if we could replace the salad, and have some veg instead, and he responded very apologetically, that this could not be substituted, and would involve an additional charge. We decided to go with the salad, which we found to be fairly average. The portion size of the meal in general, was well below expectation, and a good deal less than we would have experienced, on previous occasions. Just to add, that If we had ordered a curry, with half and half rice and chips, there would have been an additional charge for this as well. When we had finished the main course, and the waiter came to clear the table, we raised the portion size with him, and he said he would take it up with the chef. We ordered a dessert to share, and noticed the portion size had increased, as if the chef had compensated, for the inadequacy of the main course. On departure, and when settling the bill with another attendant, we were asked if everything was okay, and responded, that less than okay would more accurately describe it, stating that since alternative dining was available in the area, we may in future, vote with our feet having been regular customers of Roches in the past .

I was in Roches for food, the food was fine but the server at our table had a serious attitude. From the moment we walked in we all noticed it. She was very short and snappy with us, she made us feel as though we were a hinderance to her. We asked for our bill at the table and when I presented it to her at the till she was very sassy and unfriendly. From the moment we walked in she was unpleasant right up until we left. We would go back for the food but the service we received has turned us off revisiting again.

Roches is a really friendly bar & restaurant . The staff are excellent so professional, accommodating and impressed as enjoying being there. We were visiting Duncannon for St Patrick's Weekend had no booking on St Patricks evening but they made us feel so welcome, very busy but the Restaurant Staff were so friendly. The quality of the food was excellent and very reasonable. Would highly recommend. D X

Whilst holidaying nearby we visited Roches one evening for a meal. In our party were 3 adults and a child with special needs. Our food was superb. My burger was cooked to perfection and served with chips, peas and mushrooms. Delicious! Husband enjoyed the beef chilli nachos (ordered from the specials board) and daughter loved the variety in the snack basket. We also ordered mashed potato for the child (he eats a very restrictive diet consisting of only about 10 foods) but he refused to eat it. I asked the server if it was possible to order some white toast and she was very helpful. Toast arrived promptly and the child was happy. My husband noted that the pints of Guinness were superb and so smooth too. Would have liked to have had some Club orange or Cidona but they only had Fanta. We had such a lovely time especially grateful at how helpful the staff were in regard to my child. Would definitely visit again

Some of our family group liked their main courses , especially the vegetarian Thai green curry, however I was disappointed with mine. I chose the crab claws and prawns, but for the price paid, the portion size was that of a starter and definitely not a main course. The desserts were also a let down. The chocolate brownie was dry and tasted like a sponge and was not gooey in the middle. Also the baked cheesecake had a rubbery texture.

We are regulars in this usually delightful pub/restaurant for 30+ years. The Guinness pints are always good as is the banter with the locals in the bar with the welcoming fire. Will qualify our review - we were aware that the Strand pub opposite had a large party on this Sunday so Roches was unusually busy. Enjoyed our Guinness pints, had gone on the list for a table and then sat and sat waiting for our meal - 3 starters which would normally be served promptly. It took so long, we were halfway through a bottle of Chardonnay before 3 very average starters arrived. Bruchetta was served on fairly stale bread, hard to slice with a salad of mostly red peppers/ carrot. Grilled prawns with nduja sausage came without the sausage but replaced with samphire and 2 sourdough fingers (like stale pitta bread) Chicken wings which appeared to have been doused in paprika. We did tell the staff of all the issues - bill deduction of €13. Robbie, hopefully this was a staff shortage problem and normal service will be resumed. Why not try some more easily prepped Tapas starter plates which could be served quicker.

Very disappointed in our meal tonight. The portions have got smaller but the prices have increased. The fish was lovely but a very small portion of chips. I had the monkfish & prawn curry but there was very little fish in it for €20.95 very bad value for money. Such a pity as I always loved Roches for food. I won’t be back.

I have been coming here since I’m a child. We travel from abroad now and book Duncannon almost exclusively for the food. Last summer we had guests and everyone had said the food was up there with the best they have had. Sadly this summer it has gone massively downhill. Average fish and chips at best, the rice for the curry was hard, undercooked. We had the Ferraro cheesecake and it was terrible, tasted shop bought, cheap ingredients. The most disappointing thing however was the portion sizes. Roches was always expensive, but I was always happy to pay for quality. Now it seems expensive AND stingy. My kids €9 fish and chips was literally the size of a chicken nugget with 7 chips. They own the chipper, literally no excuse to be so mean for the price. No longer half portions of monkish curry, so €23 for grandma. They added a random stale poppadom (with a Thai curry?) I resented the bill when I used to love to pay as I was so proud to show case our fabulous local food. I won’t be bringing people again. The chef doesn’t seem to take pride in the ingredients, portion size and display. The service is very good, the young servers and responsive and have always been well trained and nice kids.

Been coming to Duncannon for years! The food has been declining in Roches over the last 2-3 years. Quality just not there anymore. Portion sizes have greatly reduced. Overall definitely not value for money. We were also served raw chicken we had to send back, looked like the same actual piece of chicken came back just cooked a little longer 5 mins later. Waiting and bar staff are all great but food is certainly no longer!

Our dinner here was such a disappointment. My sister's fish and mash was cold and tasteless. My vegan burger wasn't much better and the side of parmesan garlic chips looked great but they were cold too. When I asked for a fresh plate of them they came back a little warmer. I couldn't eat them. The young staff were pleasant and were doing the best they could. I've read other reviewers' great experiences here and I don't understand it. Maybe we just got them on a bad night but I won't be going back to test that theory.

Spent a weekend in Duncannon and visited Roches each night for food and drinks. The quality of the food was delicious and very portions were generous. The bar staff were courteous and friendly & pints of Guinness were top quality. If in Duncannon I would recommend Roches and will definitely be back.
