Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First time visit on a Saturday evening, absolutely fabulous! Quite possibly the best fillet steak I have ever had with friendly service from lovely staff. A real hidden gem of a place, I can highly recommend it and will most definitely be back. 5 stars...⭐️More

We had a brilliant meal at Black Pepper tonight. A lovely atmosphere, with really friendly staff, who took great care of my Nana, making it a really enjoyable evening for her. The food was sensational, we loved the fish of the day, tiramisu and banana...pudding. We would definitely recommend and look forward to coming again :)More

My wife ,my daughter and I booked this restaurant for Sunday lunch. When we arrived at two o'clock and surprisingly empty, maybe this was because we made the earliest booking. We were greeted by a very welcoming waitress and seated promptly. We skipped starters and...went straight for the mains. My wife ordered the chicken supreme and my daughter and I ordered the beef brisket. It was all cooked to perfection, the meal was accompanied with cauliflower cheese, carrot and parsnip mash, red cabbage and Yorkshire pudding. All cooked to perfection and every bite was so tasty and fresh. our deserts consisted of cheese board, lime cheesecake and chocolate brownie all delicious. Definitely the best restaurant in Wigan I have been to and a well kept secret. really great food, a wonderful atmosphere and great hosts. Thank you so much for a great experience.More

We visited The Black Pepper last weekend, the restaurant is small and has a lovely open kitchen. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent! The Hake from the specials board was lovely and I would go back to have it again....As was the duck from the main menu. We would definitely return.More

The food including its presentation was excellent. I had almost given up on eating in the town centre before hitting the pubs, but this restored my faith. Don't go for dessert usually but had to try the lime cheesecake with gin jelly and cucumber lolly...and it was really refreshing. Loved it.More

I am a big fan of the Black Pepper. I have dined here three times in the last six weeks or so both with family or friends. Each time, I have been overwhelmed with the tasty quality meals that they have to offer. Each time...the menu is changed it allows you to choose from meals you have never tried before and you are never disappointed. The Black Pepper is a small, family run bistro that really focusses on the customer. I have and will continue to recommend to other people.More

Food was nice service too shame the lady with the glasses felt the need to test my soup with her finger. Won't be returning!

Heard this was worth a visit. Only a small place, but very homely and friendly. Made to feel very welcome. I had pate to start which excellent. Tasty, with toast, and the ratio of toast to pate was aligned. Too often had ten times too...much pate to toast! The cod dish was recommended as the dish of the day. I questioned the recommendation, and the waitress gave me a full explanation which sold me. Absolutely fantastic. The food at this place is off the scale. Forced a dessert down! Brioche was to the standard of the first two courses. If I could give 6 stars, I would. Read my other reviews, my praise has to be earned. From the moment we walked in, I could not fault it. Six out of five.More

Great food in Wigan’s town centre Usually go eat at the Red Door Bistro round the corner but a them night on so went here. Now nothing beats the Red Door in the Wigan area that’s a fact but this lovely little place comes a...close second. Shared a haddock risotto with poached egg to start which was cooked perfect then steaks to follow mine rare fillet with Homs made chips amazing the red wine sauce had a chilli kick and was perfect . Steak great quality melt in the mouth . Service friendly you can see the chefs cooing in the open kitchen Will be going again nice atmosphereMore

This place has seriously gone down hill. No customer service very flat and no interaction. Meals felt like small portions heated frozen meals, place filled with smoke from kitchen. No difference in taste only soya sauce taste. Good job I took my own wine their...selection is poor and of cheap quality not worth considering £20.00 a bottle. Still hungry when finished crumble pie the crumble wasn't cooked. Won't be going back. Avoid this 0lace. DisappointingMore

the baked alaska wasn't baked - it just poured flat onto the plate - the outer mixture was scorched with a blow torch but when this outer skin was removed - the rest couldn't stay in place .... it was definitely not baked meringue but...uncooked white mixture, what a shame - asked specially for a window seat when booking and i even emailed several times to check this was ok - but on arrival was told my party wasn't big enough and that a bigger party was paying more so they got the window seat - pity they couldn't have told the truth a lot earlier in a reply to my email ad telephone call. The waitress also picked up my bill when I had paid by card - so I had no proof of what I had eaten. I couldn't therefore check if I had paid for two meals with two course charge or for four separate courses as the bill reached over £60More

If you want something a little different, a little dainty and serving really good produce then this is the place to go. Been a few times, with seasonal menus and tempting specials. The autumn menu was particularly excellent. The butternut squash soup was a superb...way to start, followed by the Guinea fowl 2 ways; breast and part of a shepherds pie. Outstanding dish! Finished with the baked Alaska, and enjoyed the hint of ginger in the base. Just seen the new winter menu so excited to give that a try in the new year. Keep up the good work!More

It's a very small menu - if you cant see anything then there probably isn't, but if you ring and talk to them they may well sort something out for you
