We dined at this restaurant last night to celebrate No.1 Son’s birthday not really knowing what to expect. It is located in a rather bleak Ipswich street and first impressions were that we had rocked up at a fish n chips shop. After entering, it...became apparent that we were wrong, the place was buzzing. After a bit of confusion over whether we had a booking and if we did where we were to be sitting, we were placed at our table that had been thoughtfully decorated for the occasion, much to son’s embarrassment.
The menu was a tour through edible sea life, right from the tank of lobsters awaiting their fate through to the smallest winkle. I had calamari to start, which was cooked to perfection and the others enjoyed their tempura prawns and mussels. For main course, Son and I opted for an Ocean Platter which was an absolute delight, with each mollusc, crustacean and finned friend being prepared and cooked to perfection. The Bride had a pan fried monkfish with prawns and No.1 Daughter a seafood linguine, both of which received excellent reports.
Desserts were distinctly non-fishy, but complete with an indoor firework and a round of Happy Birthday for No.1 Son, to his embarrassment.
This is a great place to dine. Visit if you can.More
This place was amazing. Simple as that. The food was delicious and very reasonable price. The waiter overheard it was my birthday and raced over with a balloon and birthday confetti and then when I ordered my second beer put it on the house.
We...had the Ocean Fish Platter which consisted of muscles, fish, scallops, calamari and prawns. We had it with chips and rice which all were fantastic. Very meaty fish. Perfect chips and beautiful light and fluffy rice.
It’s a shame that other restaurants charge so much for fish and don’t know how to cook it. This was amazing.
The service was friendly and polite and even seemed shocked that we were wanting to tip.
This is a great find and certainly will be revisited. I have already booked for my lads meal.
P.S. they have burgers and steaks, etc. So not just for fish lovers.More
Only found this fish restaurant when googling Suffolk eateries open on Mondays. To discover such a gem in Ipswich of all places is amazing. It has a sort of continental feel to it in so far as being a simply furnished cafe/restaurant but serving good...food perfectly cooked (not had such good scallops for ages). I was apprehensive about such a modest restaurant offering such an extensive menu but everything was fresh. Efficient helpful smiling service exemplary .
Cost is around £25 for two courses excluding drinks and service charge, which seems about average for fish restaurants nowadays, and very good value for this quality. Wines are a bit dear but aren't they everywhere?
2021 turned out to be the worst year imaginable to open a new restaurant and I hope The Ocean Fish Platter gets the sustained support it deserves. To judge by the comments on Tripadvisor for a place only opened seven months and two lockdowns ago it's made an auspicious start.More
Went to have lunch to celebrate my husband's birthday an dmentioned this when I made the booking, and they have suprised us with balloons, and at the end with a desert with fireworks and candle, and they even sang Happy Birthday.
We were not expecting...this, it was such a nice surprise, especially that we always spend his birthday back home with famiy, but this year we couldn't due to Covid.
The food is the BEST seafood we have ever eaten. I had the pan fried king pranws as s tarter, and you wouldn't think that dill goes well with the mediterranien sauce, but it is an excellent combination. Then I had halibut, with potates and vegetables, and everything was so well seasoned. He had the pan fried scallops and the sword fish kebab, and he was very pleased with his choice. The staff is very polite, caring and just generally you feel welcomed. Will definitely go back to try the lobsters too.More
I'm really not much of a fan of fish, my partner however loves it, so as lockdown 2 looms I finally relented and we came to the ocean for dinner, she had tempura prawns for starter I had the halloumi, both came with quite a...spicy salsa dressing, very nice, for mains I had the cod as I felt I really should have fish, it was again very nice, my partner had haddock, which was huge, I just about had room for dessert so went for the sticky toffee pudding, lovely. The food was very very good, the restaurant was very well presented and the staff were all very efficient and very friendly, it was almost like being abroad in the med (well if you swapped the view of sainsburys) we will return when we are able to.More
