I have heard about this place for awhile and I was looking forward to see where Sot lies on the spectrum of burger pubs in Trondheim. Perhaps my expectations were just too high. It turned out to be a just passable restaurant experience.
Perhaps there...were new trainees on duty, as there seemed to be a lot of loud banter with the (apparent) manager among the (young) crew. Service was decent, but it is essentially a self-service joint. One pays at the counter, one waits for the beeper, on picks up the order at a self-service pass. Drinks were served promptly, but the food took nearly 25 minutes to be ready. I suspect that it sat at the pass for awhile because the fries were cold and the burger just luke warm.
We ordered the blue cheese specialty burger. There was no detectable blue cheese flavour in the first few bites. We actually had to confirm that we received the correct order because the overwhelming flavour of the burger was sweet. Sweet onion relish of some sort overpowered the burger. It was not helped by the non-descript white bun they used. After about the third bite when we broke into the center of the burger that we finally hit the blue cheese, very subtle indeed. I would not call it a blue cheese burger but a sweet relish burger. Also, yet again, I must take issue with the nomenclature "burger" as technically what we had was a chicken sandwich. A grilled, butterflied, seasoned breast of chicken sandwich.
As I already mentioned, the sweet potato fries were cold. I wonder if they might have been from the freezer.
Decor was nice. Tableware is that rustic shabby chic that is en vogue now, like enamel ware plates. Prices were fair market for Norway. All extras like cheese, bacon, sauces, etc. cost extra. I suspect part of the appeal of Sot is the bar.
Overall, though I was disappointed, I would still hold it out as a decent choice for Sentrum eateries. Perhaps I just hit a bad night. 4Just know that there are perhaps 6 better burger joints about a stone's throw away.More
