Felt as though we were eating where the locals ate and seemingly not a lot of tourists about which made for a very authentic experience. The food was decent and service was efficient. Probably helped that we were with two German friends who struck up...a rapport with the waiter. I can understand the need for table turnover so I wasn't offended when they asked for the table back after we had paid the bill and they wanted it freed up for the next clients.More

If you are asking for a table for 1- don’t bother!! They showed me to a table at the back and informed me that I only have 30 mins to drink and eat. I asked to sit at the other empty small tables at the...front - they rudely stated NO!! Agreed with the other reviewers - staff are rude and lack customer service skills. Naturally I walked out!!More

We stopped here for breakfast and it wasn’t busy when we first arrived which was nice. I was happy I was able to order the stew in the morning, it was one of my favorite meals while in Vienna! Service was good and the owner...shook our hands on the way out. Bathroom was a little hard to find, it was next to the bar behind a curtain.More

Me and my wife ordered food, which was brought to us without cutlery. When I tried to get one of the waiter's attention he just made a cutting neck gesture and literally said "I'm finished, I'm not here", and walked out the door. After my...wife went to the bar herself for the cutlery and we finished our food we wanted to order coffee and dessert. I tried to ask another waiter about the different desserts on the menu but he was incredibly rude, brusque and snappy, saying something like 'whatever you want' and basically just hurrying us up to pick something. So with that we just ordered the bill and left, without ordering anything else. I don't think I've ever had a waiter speak to me like that before, it was disgraceful. If you expect to be treated with an ounce of respect, don't bother coming here.More

Walked in front door to see if this cafe would suit my mother in law and I got forcibly pushed out by the waiter. Disgraceful!

Classic coffee ☕ place for those who miss the good old times. Sit down, relax and enjoy your coffee and cake at a pedestrian alley in the center of Vienna. The waiter was friendly and professional. The outside area doesn't differ from other places but...the inside takes you to a travel in the past.More

Looking forward to spending time where the artists and writers hung out in Vienna in 1950s. Sadly, it was not a good experience. Very brusque and rude waiter shoved us into a table by the front door and didn’t even give us a menu, just...asked us if we wanted coffee or tea and either chocolate cake or apple strudel. Plenty of other options on the menu when we asked for one from a neighbouring table. We were compelled to order quickly and when we asked for something else about 5 minutes later this never arrived. Same brusque waiter told us we had to pay in cash and lectured us about how they relied on tipping but it was up to us (said sarcastically). Was going to give this waiter the benefit of the doubt and put it down to him having a bad day, but looking at the other reviews, this appears to be quite normal. Coffee and chocolate cake were ok, nothing special. Will not be returning and cannot recommend. Lots of other cafes to choose from,, much nicer and friendlier with better food and coffee and far better service, such as Cafe DemelMore

Great pick-me-up in between museums. Nice patio area to watch the crowds go by. Coffee was great and though we wanted a sweet sampler - the options were limited beyond what was available on the menu.

Horrible, very impolite waiters, super expensive and simply not worth it. Better go somewhere else like Cafè Central, plenty of others to choose from.

Came across the cafe by chance on our last day in Vienna. Not having had the chance to visit a coffee house, we went in. The place was atmospheric and the coffee was good, but, as others have noted, the service was not impressive. Although...it was busy, it was not overcrowded by any means, but no one seems to notice you are there! Our waiter, when we eventually we got one, was not rude, but rather, indifferent. A pity, as our experience with hospitality in Vienna had been very positive up until that point.More

Lovely old world café which had been recommended to us previously. We enjoyed coffee and chocolate desserts served with grace. We sat outside on the terrace however the interior, which has been restored back to its original, was very elegant and impressed. We met the...owner who spent some time regaling us with the history and all in all, had a very pleasant hour or so.More

We came here to experience the old school cafe culture of Vienna. Location is very close to the hustle and bustle of Stephensplatz with all the tourists milling around, and upon entering Cafe Hawelka you feel instantly transported back in time, and you almost forget...about the busyness outside. We sat at a table and gave our order to the waiter, and admired the décor which hasn't changed for a long time, along with the furniture, and it gives the space a very authentic feel. We ordered an espresso, hot chocolate, and the seasonal cake which was cherry, and this was the best pudding we had all week, and possibly the nicest sponge I have ever tasted. What gave me a lasting memory however, was when Günter Hawelka himself brought out our cake, and as we had ordered 1 cake between two asked if it was enough, like any good grandparent would, and also an extra plate for my girlfriend so she didn't have to lean over. I don't speak fluent German so he spoke to us in English, and in a way that gave me the feeling that this was a genuine interaction, and that he cares deeply about his family business, treating just another tourist like family. I hope to visit Vienna again one day, and I will be heading straight back here.More

The specialete was a far cry from the promised...review we read - yes, it was fresh and soft but the jam was horrible, the coffee - they have only black (three alternatives only: black with whipcream or milk was strong there was no Nescafé.
