Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I loved the atmosphere here. It's been called shabby, but I feel at home here. I had several coffee drinks, such as a Wiener Melange and a Schale Gold, and a few beers. I sat reading the newspapers for quite a while, just relaxing after...my day of sightseeing. I've daydreamed about that Schale Gold ever since. Just really wonderful, superior coffee.More

We had very unpleasant experience at Cafe Havelka in Vienna today. Rather rude waiter insisted on paying only cash for our order. When we asked to pay by card, he said no way. To our question why, he replied why not. Very disappointing for such...place located at the downtown of Vienna, almost on the most prestigious Graben street. Rude service, not clean. Will never visit this place againMore

I chose this bar because of its rich tradition. It's not really cheap, but the quality of the food and drinks served is good. The service is very professional, but not always polite... The café is characteristically furnished.

Café Hawelka, located in central Vienna, offers a distinct experience that evokes a sense of stepping back in time. The interior, with its vintage decor and nostalgic ambiance, feels like a preserved piece of Vienna's past. One of the café's highlights it'd definitely its strudel,...or if you manage to be there before 11AM, the breakfast (warm bread and croissant with jam and butter, ham, cheese and a boiled egg). The atmosphere at Café Hawelka is warm and inviting, though it tends to be crowded. This means it's often bustling, which can add to its charm but also makes finding a seat challenging. For the best chance of securing a spot and enjoying a quieter visit, it's advisable to come early in the morning.More

Unforgettable moment of the Vienna Caffe Culture celebration. Hawelka Menu - double espresso with a splash of Birnenschnaps and a piece of Sachertorte. Great!

Went there due to a recommendation from a friend. Old guy serving us seems to accept only german speaking customers and upon identifying that we speak no german he rudely spoke to us and made us leave instead of explaining to us in simple english....Avoid at all costs if you don’t speak english !More

So, there aren’t a lot of choices for lunch/dinner, but the veggie strudel was good. All three of us got that and liked it. I didn’t get there for coffee, so I can,t vouch for the coffee, but judging from all the rest of coffees...I had here in Vienna, it’s probably good. I never had a bad cup anywhere I went. Cafe Hawelka looks like it hasn’t changed since it opened in 1945. It was charming in that way. Not elegant like Cafe Central, so don’ t expect that. But sort of a faded glory realness to it. Not super touristy. Apparently Andy Worhal and Henry Miller hung out here. So if you want elegance, go to Cafe Central or Cafe Sperl ( less pretentious that Central and more locals). If you want a more local experience, try Hawelka.More

We wanted to visit a historical coffee in Vienna (it was my whim) and we chose this one. The place is nice and authentic. We drank coffee and hot chocolate, as well as a piece of Sacher torte, and they were quite good (a bit...expensive, as it was to expect in the center of Vienna in a coffee recommended by the Lonely planet guide). We liked the atmosphere, the decoration, the service and the coffee.More

Very rude host, after waiting 20 minutes in the rain, the host let past 1 guest and said “he is our regular guest” you have to wait, we mentioned we were tourists and it's not a good way to greet guests, but he seemed careless...and shut the door in our faces. We left, but very bad experience from the beginning.More

If you get the opportunity to visit this wonderful coffee shop please do! It’s like stepping back in time. Totally authentic; wonderful owner who will gladly shake your hand and tell you more about the three generations of his family who have run the coffee...house. Coffee and service is great. Try the Kunstler Fruhstuck for a traditional soft boiled egg and bread with chives and butter. Delicious! Please remember to take cash and it does get busy over the weekend so you may have to queue. And coffee and cake only served on a Sunday.More

Crazy busy traditional café. Still, less of a wait outside in the bitter cold than the more famous nearby places. We were asked if we would share a (tiny) table, which allowed us to be seated much sooner. Our hot chocolate and mélange coffee were...the perfect warmer uppers. The Sacher torte was moist and delicious. And our table mates were delightful.More

Visited this cafe as we wanted a coffee and a sit down to escape the cold and have a nice sit down and relax. I’d read about this cafe and so was keen to visit an institution rather than Starbucks or something similar. There was...a group of 6 waiting in the queue in front of us who told us to tell the waiter manning the door that we were a party of 2 in case a small table cane up first. When I told him he said “what do you expect me to do about it”, I was a little bit shocked, I didn’t know what to say. Another couple then arrived who spoke in German to the man at the door who was friendly to them and confirmed they were looking for a table for 2 also. I have enough basic German from school to understand what was being said. He then proceeded to let them in first ahead of us. Luckily they kindly told him we were first and insisted we go ahead. It was obviously deliberate because we were tourists. When we wanted to pay we were told cash only, despite the fact the table next door had paid by card 2 minutes previously. The waiter said “you can leave a tip”. I didn’t bother. Tips are for service. Clearly the staff of this cafe don’t feel they need to make any sort of efforts with tourists who won’t become regulars. This visit left a sour taste in my mouth instead of the warm enjoyable experience it could have been and I hope this review means others won’t spend their hard earned holiday money here.More
