About
This famous traditional café with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature café was a meeting point for all ages, regular guests, Viennese locals and visitors. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialties, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience. Daily Live Piano Music from 5pm on! We were waiting for our turn to take a seat in the café, once we got to be the first of the line, the person taking care of welcoming the guests and guiding them to their table, completely ignored us and called three other persons...cueing behind us (same number of guests), just because he decided so and regardless of the time we spent waiting to be served. After mine and my husband’s complains about this, the host, very coldly, told us to follow him to the table. This unjustified move really spoiled the mood and disappointed everyone, especially after so much time spent waiting for our turn. Moreover, a little side note, the tip should never be asked to the clients. It should be a spontaneous act of the customer to decide whether to tip or not for the service received. Especially if the hospitality is of such low quality.More

The best case ever. The decor is stunning and we had the most amazing cakes we ever had. The coffee was ok, the cakes were orgasmic. Brilliant place and the most famous cafe in the City. Make sure you give it a visit

After queueing for a short time we were shown to our table in a beautiful dining room. Service efficient but without a smile. Food was good and generous: sandwich and salad was really good. Didn’t try the cakes but they looked amazing. The wait was...totally worthy.More

Wanted to eat their world famous Kaiserschmarren but i was told that it isn’t available before 10 am but only the cakes on display. Ordered the applestrudel, instead which was a mediocre experience (was served cold) Bottom line: you pay for the name and not...for the food.More

We had booked this online and were so glad we did as the queue was long; we walked straight in and had a lovely meal before going to the opera. The staff were really friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent. The schnitzel was...the best we've ever had. The cakes looked amazing but we couldn't manage one! Beautiful room and ambience. This was the best of a number of cafes that we visited in Vienna.More

Eat here if you like history (Trotsky) and a little bit of exhibitionism (since at many of the tables you are on display to the queuing hordes as you eat). We had to fight our way inside together with other people who also had reservations,...the entrance was so crowded this was a daunting task. Once in, contrary to some reviews we had read beforehand, service was prompt and smiling, food was tasty, piano music was a fun addition. Tip: it closes at 9pm and became significantly quieter as the evening went on, but people could still come in for coffee and cake right up to the end of service.More

We queued for about 40min to get lunch at the famous Café Central! The location is great. The interior looks very nice and you can feel the history of the building. The food was good but not exceptional. I was most excited about the desserts...but they were average at best (we got no.12 and no.6). The service though was disappointing (they were extremely slow for our entire sitting. We waited a lot for the waiter to come and give us the menus, pick up the order, bring us the drinks etc.)More

The dining hall has beautiful architecture. Service was great. Food of course was amazing. We ordered pancake (a cake baked in a pan, not crepe), apple strudel. Coffee with orange liqueur. Melange. I wish i could have ordered more. We went around 10 am. After...11 is started to get crowdedMore

Very nice and characteristic place to have a unique breakfast. A bit expensive honestly! We took one coffee one cappuccino, two pieces of cake = 23.8 € According to others eating there for lunch is less expensive in comparison...

Very beautiful decoration. The atmosphere is just perfect but the cake and coffee are average and there is nothing special about them. They are the same as everywhere.

Waiter Leo was fantastic... friendly, attentive and quick service. Mostly gorgeous food (especially scrambled eggs and chocolate mousse cake). The only let down was the smoked salmon -mostly the grey bits. Lovely atmosphere, definitely book so you don't have to queue.
