If you truly want to experience the essence of Vasa, this is the place to be. This second-generation, family-owned restaurant is set in a meticulously restored historical pavilion, nestled in a lush, verdant park by the inner harbor. With views of sailboats gliding by and the relaxed atmosphere of passersby, you can truly feel the spirit of Vasa. Sipping cider on the terrace while listening to a troubadour and watching the sun slowly set over the ocean is the epitome of summer in Finland and Vasa. The ambiance here is unique, seamlessly blending the timeless charm of old Vasa with the vibrant energy of its modern counterpart. The lunch offering is arguably the best deal in town. We enjoyed a full lunch, which included an extensive and varied salad buffet with a wide array of salads, olives, couscous, bread spreads, and more. The mains on the day of our visit featured options like salmon with apple cider cream sauce and slow-roasted beef with Béarnaise sauce, accompanied by creamy potatoes, potato wedges, and a selection of vegetables. The chef personally serves the proteins, while you can help yourself to the sides, allowing you to tailor your portion size to your preference. There were also salmon soup and vegetarian options available. The meal concluded with coffee or tea and some Fazer Blue chocolates, all for the remarkably reasonable price of €14.50—about what you’d spend on a coffee and pastry elsewhere. It was, without a doubt, the best food we tasted during my month-long exploration of the area’s restaurants. The service was efficient, attentive, and warm. With 25 years of experience in luxury hospitality, I can confidently say that the staff here is exceptionally professional. I was thoroughly impressed. Vasa is truly fortunate to have this gem—not only as a showcase of culinary excellence but also as a cultural beacon, bridging the history of the old Vasa dance pavilion with the vibrant cultural scene of today. I wouldn’t just recommend a visit to Strampen if you’re in Vasa; I would recommend coming to Vasa specifically to experience Strampen.

Ok restaurant in Vasa

Had dinner here and the service was very good the whole evening! The food though was not that great and was lacking flavor. The halloumi cheese starter was fairly mediocre and the main meal was fish and crushed potatoes and was lacking salt totally. But location was great by the sea and the service was great!

Still the best option in Vaasa

Lovely place still. Crowded by Vaasa standards which indicates it’s still very well-liked. We had a private room and the service was fast and attentive. Fish and salad starters were good. Fish entree also tasty; my mother’s lamb was tender and properly cooked. Desserts were delicious. Your best bet in this small town.

A restaurant with all possibilities both inside and outside. High quality food with nice layouts. Nice staff but… We were unlucky when it took almost two hours before we all got food. Once it arrived, the result was good. The irritation was great and the food was good and we were treated to dessert.

Lovely place by the seaside!

My experience was excellent and memorable! It was lovely to sit outside on the patio on a warm summer day. The building and scenery are beautiful, the staff was professional and friendly, and food and drinks were perfect. Amazing experience!

Excellent lunch

The location of the restaurant is excellent, with a sea view from the terrace and next to the main art museums in Vaasa. Lunch was buffet style with a very good selection to start with. The main course was delivered by the chef through the kitchen window, there was a choice of fish or meat (and perhaps veg, don't know for sure). We had salmon and it was very good. The sides (warm vegetables and potatoes) could be self-selected from a buffet. A good experience.

Good, but could be much better

This long established restaurant is popular with locals and tourists. Part of the restaurant has water views and the building could best be described as an oversized gazebo. The food menu is good with a nice variety of dishes to choose from. The "wine by the glass" on offer is very poor. I had the Fish Plate as a starter and although the White Fish tartar was not as fresh as it should have been the dish overall was fine. The main dish of fried White Fish with chanterelles was good. The restaurant was not busy, but the service was slow and definitely not up to a standard you would expect from one of the better restaurants in town. The rating reflects the lack of a reasonable wine selection and below average service. If this restaurant just smartened up the service and offered a better choice of wines it could become great restaurant.

We went to Strampen for dinner and it was excellent! The food was very good we had seafood soup and fish . The service was also very good and nice atmosphere. Totally recommend it and I would go back any time

You order at the bar yourself for practical reasons No big deal. Food and drink and service quality is Fast and Fab. They even had meat from new zealand on the menu. (So a little unhappy with the environmental impact of such practices.) We enjoyed a gorgeous Fish dish with potatoes and a gigantic side of sweet potatoes and halloumi salad. No complaints at all. Would happily live next door for the rest of the summer.

Excellent and surprisingly smooth!

It's always a pleasure to eat lunch at Strampen. The food and the service are both very good. This time we happened to visit when it was basically fully booked, but the lines to wait for foid weren't even that long. And as usual, there was the salad table, the main course and the coffee table. The food was excellent, as usual. The only reason I'm not giving it a full score this time is because of the seagulls, house sparrows and other birds that tried to get their share of our food, since we sat outside on the terrace. So you can't really blame Strampen for them...

Wouldn’t mind a second visit

Nice location on waterfront in Vaasa. The food looked very good and tasted even better. Very friendly and efficient service. Knowledgable and the waitress did not hesitate to question my choice of wine with the dish “to light for the sauce that goes with the dish”. I took her advice and she was absolutely right!
