We have had dinner at this restaurant each winter for the past three years, surroundings are incredibly interesting, but quality is simply going down the hill. Food has been excellent until this year. No bread was offered while waiting, the mains were served as incredibly small portions and the pana cotta dessert was uneatable and shouldn't have been on the menu. In addition to that, the same dessert at the neighbouring table was larger than ours, so we suspect they serve mini portions from a set menu as full mains. Don't bother going, you'll find plenty of good options in other restaurants - and even less expensive.

Wonderful restaurant located on the ground level of Hotel Katajanokka. The service was wonderful and their dinner recommendations were exactly as described. I tried arctic char for the first time - wild from Norway. The fish itself looks similar to a salmon. It was cooked perfectly and was very delicious and complimented the white wine perfectly. I also had a mushroom pasta the following night. It was creamy goodness. The restaurant also serves an all you can eat breakfast that's wonderful. It's a beautiful combination of continental and traditional Finnish items. Great service as well- true professionals in hospitality. I will be back the next time I'm in Finland!!

Restaurant Linnankellari is situated in several basement rooms. We were placed in an area, which was previously used for workshop purposes.
Their menu includes a very good starter for a prison restaurant: water & bread. We shared this course, and it was a nice "pre starter". As actual starters we enjoyed shrimp skagen and pike perch sausage. Skagen was delicious with tasty malt bread as the base. Our mains - beef fillet and reindeer tongue were both good. We also ordered a bowl of sweet potato fries, which were delicious. Apple pie desserts were rather sizeable ones.
The service ran smoothly and their recommendation of Spanish red wine for main courses was fine.

We had breakfast at this atmospheric prison restaurant while staying in the hotel. It was pleasantly calm at 8:30.
The breakfast buffet was quite extensive. Sausages and meatballs I didn't find but there were fried eggs which are unusual at Finnish hotel breakfasts.
The service was friendly.

Really interesting surroundings in former prison. There are also two 'museums' in the basement. Breakfast is really good, lunch is reasonable priced tasty buffet and dinner is tasty. Summer time there is large and nice terrace. Definitely worth to visit.

I visited Linnankellari for dinner with my teenage son. The dishes are named in line with the restaurant’s past and contain plenty of prison slang. My son had a burger, I had salmon, both very good, but not extraordinary. The restaurant is not cheap, but it is not outrageously (over-)priced either. There are a few vegetarian / vegan options as well.

+ Food is very tasty.
+ Lunch is 11 EUR, with salad, bread, water, main dish and coffee.
+ Each weekday three different lunch alternatives.
+ Service is friendly and very speedy.
+Atmosphere is calm, there is space, not crowded.

The lunch was simply put horrible. It was tortilla buffet. Fillings: dry and hard pieces of meat and some beans that looked like baked beans from a can. Tortillas were hard and dry. Salad buffet not great either. Took two bites and couldn’t eat more than that. One of the worst lunches I’ve ever had..

Fascinating ambience being a former prison. Food was ok, but nothing special.
We arrived quite late for lunch and it looked like some of the dishes had already run out. I got the last pan cakes!

We visited Linnakellari with family only for holiday breakfast.
What a great atmosphere and beautiful interior!
Food did not give any surprises, no positive nor negative. Our family members liked wide selections of coffee and tea, however.

Staff knows how to keep the feeling great and relaxed. Tried a vegetarian burger, wow what a great surprise. Also sweet potatoes with a chili sauce were super. If you happen to have a breakfast here, ask for an omelet🤝

Great escape from the busy outdoor eating in the center of town: it has its own garden yard atmosphere with lounge music. Modest menu but very good quality bearing in mind its past-a prison! Looked inside and found a unique prison feel hotel. The friendly concierge have us a tour with interesting stories of its past. Tons of character and probably a fun place to stay.

Visited Linnankellari with family (small children) for a breakfast. Overall positive experience and good quality-price ratio. Good selection and tasty, fresh food. Enough room for family and also highchairs. Easy access with prams. Polite and efficient service. Recommended.

We ate here as part of our tour. We had cauliflower soup, beef and pannacotta which were all excellent. The service was very good and we enjoyed our experience!
