The location of this restaurant can't be beat - views of the Uspenskin Cathedral, Market Square, the harbor and the streets nearby are fantastic.
I told the staff that I just have time (break) for a glass of good beer, and they were quite agreeable...- after all the sightseeing I'd had that day, a great glass of cold Pilsner was an absolute bliss. The seating outside on top of the deck was very comfortable and quite relaxing.
Savvy travelers know to avoid gimmicky and tourist trappy restaurants - and the fact that this brewpub is literally in the visitors center smells of that. Had it not been for a word of mouth recommendation, I would have skipped it...
...and that would have...been a bad thing.
This tiny pub has a spartan interior and you order at the bar. But the food is excellent, and the cider (I don't drink beer) brewed on the island is just plain amazing. it's not cheap, but nothing in Helsinki is, and given almost everything has to be shipped to Suomenlinna...I think the prices are reasonable. It's right by the ferry dock, so perfectly positioned to eat, drink, and stumble onto the ferry back to the mainland. (Which after their portions, you will).
Took a star off because it was very unclear that you have to order at the counter.More
The restaurant had beautiful selections at good prices. My husband had Reindeer prepared with roasted potatoes and grilled vegetables. I had lamb sausage which was served with a barley and onion compote and grilled vegetables. Even the bread basket was excellent
I can’t speak for the food, as we didn’t have any, but I did get a flight of the four beers available when i stopped in. We sat out on the terrace, which is really nice, and separated from the hustle and bustle of the...ferry dock, only meters away.
The Pilsner was quite good—very crisp, dry, with good flavor, highly recommend it.
The berry beer was tart, with good berry flavor, with out being sweet. Very quenching for a warm afternoon.
The pale ale was pretty enjoyable, but lacking in citrus hop aroma and flavor—drinkable, for sure, but i would take the other two ahead of it.
Sadly, the wheat beer was just lacking in flavor and aroma. Nothing technically wrong with it, but nothing to recommend it, either.
I would love to go back and grab a pint of the pils and sit out on the terrace and try the food. Perhaps on another trip.More
I came to the first place I found when disembarking on the island as I was so hungry and wasn't disappointed with the quality of the food. This being Finland the same thing could not be said for the price, but one knows that when...deciding to come. Nevertheless it came as a bit of a shock after disembarking from Tallinn where things cost somewhat less. I can see why the Finns go there for the beer! I chose the mackerel salad, which came with 2 small pieces of delicious smoked fish, a few bits of what looked and tasted like fried bread and various leaves with tomatoes. It was actually surprisiingly filling. The local beer that washed it down wasn't bad either, although too pricey to repeat too often! It filled the gap, the setting was nice and the service reasonable so I guess this has to be at least an average rating.More
I can't give this a zero rating, so it is a "1". We sat in the terrace on a nice afternoon, the indoor seating was empty, and we waited.... A waitress cleaned the table, and never came back. I eventually went in and was told...they don't come to the terrace to take orders. So, I ordered 3 beers, and they messed it up. We had planned to eat there, but were too annoyed to risk it.More
