We went with a group of 14. They sat us at 2 tables (8 and 6). The service was excruciatingly slow. Only water given, and no drink order taken for over 30 minutes. Took about 45 between appetizers and main course. We had been pre-warned we had to order off the group menu, and then we found that exceptions had... More

I've been to this nostalgic restaurant a couple of times now and I have no complaints. The food is traditional finnish food with a few international additions to the menu. Last time I had chicken with dark boletus sauce and garlic potatoes (asked for them instead of beetroot-barley-mix), it was simple and delicious! Service is friendly and there are obviously... More

After reading reviews over I decided to book a table for dinner. The menu is straightforward and not many choices. We stared with soup. Mine tomato and basil and my husband's salmon. Mine nothing to brave about but the salmon soup was delicious. Mains: meat balls and pork with mash. Both excellent choices. The wine list is a bit expensive... More

This place looks like coming from 30-40 years in the past, but in a good way. The menu doesn't have fancy things on, but focuses on traditional and hearty dishes. I have tried an excellent pike perch, prepared with an old recipe. The price is also slightly more convenient than the usually insanely high average prices in Helsinki.

Ate here with three friends on a Saturday, good job we booked as it was very busy. Lots of choice on the menu, portions are generous and good value. Our party wanted traditional Finnish food and we tried the pike-perch and meatballs. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The desserts were a bit small for the money, but still tasty. Would definitely... We were recommended Kolme Kruunua by a local, and we're extremely pleased that we were! Upon first appearances, the restaurant looks very cosy and humble. It's quite small, but the wait staff were friendly, efficient, and quick to seat us - our own waitress was attentive and the kitchen was quick to process our orders. My husband ordered the Reindeer... More

We went here because it had traditional Finnish food and was not as crazy expensive as the other places. We all got a traditional Finnish dish and they were really good. If you can afford it, the reindeer tenderloin was amazing! They have at least one option for gluten free, vegetarian and low lactose. The staff was friendly. It gets... More

It was busy on a rainy Tuesday evening and almost entirely populated by Finns which I think says a lot. Its well known ( at least by our Finn friends) for typical local food. Well I don't know if goats cheese sald is a local speciality but of its type was excellent and a huge portion for a starter and... More

Kolme kruunua, "Three Crowns", has a traditional Finnish menu with tasty meat and fish dishes. I chose reindeer stew, my friends had whitefish and duck. Everyone was quite content. This evening there was even live piano playing which made the atmosphere even cosier than usual.

Description
The story of Kolme Kruunua ('three crowns') began in 1952, when restaurateur Irja Örn (1910-1992) together with her husband decided to renovate their café and bar Liisan Baari and turn it into a restaurant. Many still feel that the restaurant serves the very best meatballs, "Pyttipannu" ('hash') and fried Baltic herrings in the city. The well-preserved interior of Kolme Kruunua was designed by artist Emil Ruokolainen (1895-1968), who was a renowned decorative painter in his time. His artwork can be found, for instance, in several Finnish schools and churches. In the restaurant, his craftsmanship can especially be seen in the beautifully polished mirror hanging on the back wall. The glass paintings decorating the windows of Kolme Kruunua were designed and painted by artist Fritz Hilbert (1898-1981), who later became the artistic director of the S. Wuorio decorative painting company. Kolme Kruunua is one of the few restaurants in Helsinki where the demographic of the customers ranges from twentysomethings to over 80-year-olds. Some of the elder customers who remember their fathers spending time at the restaurant, now, in their twilight years, enjoy the atmosphere of the place themselves. In mid-1990s, the old wine bar was replaced with a bar counter, but otherwise the original interior with its wood paneling, old lamps, glass paintings and glass decorations has been preserved.
