After a very disappointing dinner elsewhere, we were wandering the streets of Helsinki on a beautiful summer's evening. Still hungry and annoyed about our dinner, we gravitated towards Gaijin once again. It has been our go-to restaurant whilst visiting Helsinki for years and we were...reminded that we should not swerve off the path in the future. We got there around 9 pm and got seated in the lounge which is our favourite spot. The kitchen closes at 10 pm Weds-Sat at the moment - check the times on their website. As we only went for snacks, we ordered the pork buns which were heavenly, hoisin beef and foie gyoza which were very good and the chicken katsu which deserves it's own review - it was amazing! I could've eaten so much more. Every element of the dishes just works so well together. Perfectly moist but crispy chicken, pickles, dressings, all wrapped up in shiso or lettuce leaves. Delicious! Service was excellent as usual. This place is worth every penny. My only wish is to live closer to Helsinki so I could enjoy Gaijin more often!More

I definitely not recommend place ! The kitchen closes at 22:00 in summer . Unbelievable! In Finland they complain they never have enough customers but they don’t know how to sell and the word service is a concept to delvelope!

Excellent experience! We ordered tasting menus and the wine packages (+coctails for aperitifs). All courses tasted good and sake/wine was perfectly paired with them. We had asked for table from the corner of the restaurant and that was good, because the restaurant is otherwise a...little bit crambed.More

We had a great dinner with friends. The food was really great and tasty. Especially Gaijin pork bun, baby back pork ribs, chicken 'katsu party' and red geisha dessert. The service was also good and the milieu pleasant.

I was visitng the place for me and my girlfriends 1st anniversary. We tried the tasting menu.. We had really high hopes and expectations cause i heard that the restaurant is owned by one of finlands celebrity chef. (did not check this informantion) Anyway, the...restaurant was not packed but we feared that if more people will show up there will be no privacy since the tables are so close to eachother. The tasting menu was 69 euros per person. The food itself was nothing special.. It was not entirely bad.. But it was definately not good. It was not according to the price. The serving was on one plate and we just had to go ahead and split it ouselves.. Which is pretty wierd.. The plating... There is no reason to even get into that.. Food was pretty bland and not working together. Like i said it was not terrible. Except the octopuss that was terrible, i think that my flip flop would have been easier to cut and chew. There was a feeling that most of the fish products were frozen and not fresh. The bao bun with the pork was good, that we enjoyed, but also kept waiting for the taste of the 'kimchi mayonaise' which we only did taste on the last bite. But anyway, ive had better bao buns in a 'fastfood' restoraunt for 8 euros per pair. We took the food with the drink menu which is 'paired with the food'.. Ulitmately the drinks are supposed to add to the taste of food. These pairings just did the complete opposite. (except for the dessert wine, that went together very well) The service was really bad. Every was carried out by a different waiter and ypu dont feel any connection to 'your waiter', and every waiter was more unproffesional than the other. For example- i went to the mens room and meanwhile the waiter had took the food to the table and already introduced the food with my girlfriend and went away.. My girlfriend had to explain to me what it is and all. Never seen that. The sommelier was the only person who felt somewhat proffesional and pleasing.. Altho i have never seen a sommelier crouching down while explaining the drinks. The conclusion is that we went there and i wanted to show my girlfriend some 'restaurant food', and in the end with every dish and everything i had to explain to her that it is not how it usually is so she does not get the wrong impression about 'fine dining' or restaursnt food' refer to it as you want. Was not a great first experiance for her.. The food and drinks and service definately was not worth the 300 euors we payed (tip included, cause we are nice people) Would not reccomend. There are definately better places that are a lot cheaper. Have to say that it was really nice of them to put a candle for our anniversary in the dessert.More

We went for the sunday tasting menu that was offered and cannot say anything negative with regards to the food being served, nor the service. I did find it however quite pricey given the dishes and portion size.

Very dissatisfied. Arrogant service and poor food. Not a restaurant to recommend. Little wine in the sommeliers wine pairing

Gaijin used to be my favourite restaurant in Helsinki. Lonely at the top! Used to be... I came for the incredible taste, always making up for the service which was never super. Despite many visits, I was never ever recognised as a returning customer, correct...service but rarely ‘from the heart’. New staff almost every time. Over the years, taste went down and price went up. Charging for water, for rice (no, not for a refill but for the rice which was brought without asking for it). You’re down for almost 10€ already just by stepping through the door. With some pain in the heart, I‘ll be looking for a new favourite next time in Helsinki. Farewell Gaijin...More

Had a really long business lunch here in Jan. I was looking for a quiet place that would allow us to discuss privately. Luckily Gaijin was quite empty at 1pm so we ended up enjoying a 2hrs tasting menu. Loved the full menu and will...definitely come again.More
