Weekend in Helsinki

We were in Helsinki and although we had the idea of eating Finnish specialities, on the first evening we chose this place because it was close to the hotel, while on the second we preferred to do an encore because the food was excellent, the staff was welcoming and very knowledgeable. The two young Italian chefs demonstrated great passion and mastery in carrying out their work. Well done! Highly recommended

Great starters and pasta apart from heavy use of salt

Friendly staff. Food was great, apart from the extremely over salted pasta (carbonara). According to 2 people who tasted it, it was almost uneatable. The other pasta was fine tho (cheese and butter pasta). Starters were also delicious. Pricing was very fair, about 20-25 per main course.

Fabulous service and delicious supper, visited twice

Staying at Pier4 but the restaurant could not find a table as they said they were busy and the reception team recommended Locanda Scappi. We arrived and they were also busy, yet found some space and offered us seats at the bar, then swiftly provided water and focaccia. On the first visit I had the Cavatelli alla Crudaiola with tomatoes and basil, my friend had carbonara. Food was great and service was amazing. Two days later we’d had a full day and didn’t even try the hotel restaurant and went straight back to Locanda Scappi. My friend had the same carbonara again, I had the Aubergine Caponata and Zucchine trifolate as a main. Once again the meal and service were excellent. Two minutes walk from Pier 4 and we’d highly recommend this restaurant.

Wife told to leave bar area

Sorry bit of a whine really, this restaurant is within a hotel complex, there is a small flower pot that separates the hotel and the restaurant plus the security door. This is more of a demonstration of a double standard this restaurant or a culture of the management / staff or could even be written into their lease for permission to do the following. First night as a hotel guest i was playing pool and fancied a drink, there is a clear sign that you cannot order from the hotel side, i walked around to the bar and requested a drink ( by the way the staff are very polite and nice people), but i was told that the hotel is a separate business they dont have anything to do with it and as such cannot serve alcohol to be consumed in outside of the restaurant. Which i fully understand and decide to sit in the bar area to drink my pint. But the issue arose when the wife returned to pool table from the the hotel coffee machine, walked around to me I the bar and sat down. The one of the nice polite guys came over and told her to leave, she is not allowed to drink a coffee on the restaurant if not purchased there. Again we understood, but the wife was very embarrassed and was made to leave, I quickly finished my drink to be with her and left. So far i think they were correct but handled a small situation and made it much bigger, i went back to laying pool then as i was leaving i noticed that a couple of the restaurant staff had taken food out to the restaurant via a small door and sat in the hotel common area tables. I dismissed this a small issue and wine to bed. But hey following night again coming back the hotel to play pool, we found as a paying customer of the hotel that there were no seats near the pool table because the restaurant staff and sous chef were dining in the available spaces. I wanted to challenge all of them as to why they embarrassed my wife over a cup of coffee yet they take up all the space i paid for to eat there dinner in a business they told me they were separated from. But as i have consumed 4 or 5 pints my wife told me to calm down and not make a scene, so i left it, Int’l now sober and seething in the Finnair Platinum Corner lounge heading of on the next leg of our trip. Disclaimer, yes the hotel or their lease may approve of this, but if so, really kick a lady out of a bar for having a coffee and embarrassing her, a good culture at a business would have simply poured her coffee into a suitable glass and allowed her to be with me whilst i drank my beer.

Average food, good fresh pasta, but vey poor service. Waiters don't follow adeguately the table (even if the restaurant was't full), don't offer any bread with the beef tartare and, when asked by the customer, bring some soft focaccia, the worst possible for the purpose. The poorest moment, after choosing the wine: waiter takes away the glasses from the table, and brings them back with the wine. As a general rule, a customer needs to SEE the waiter pour the wine from the chosen bottle.

We used the Dining by Amex including a starter and a main dish for two. I would claim that the quality of this place doesn’t meet the standards of Amex. The service was really bad. There were several bones in the chicken fillets for my entree and I sent the food back to the kitchen. None of the staff members apologized even once. We pointed out the unprofessional handling of the situation, and the incident was only apologized for when I expressed my disappointment with the level of the service. The waiters admitted that there should have been no bones in the dish, but they clearly did not understand that the situation should have been handled professionally. At first, the staff didn't consider any kind of compensation appropriate, but only after we demanded the compensation they agreed to give us the waters and extra truffles free of charge. Due to the poor quality of the service, I can't recommend the place to anyone, and I certainly won't be coming back here again.

How do you say disappointed in Italian?

After reading all the positive reviews it was time to give Locanda Scappi a visit. A very disappointing meal.. the one additional star goes to the one server who was attentive and extremely pleasant. The starters were decent but nothing to write home about. The main course was so salty, I felt the chef seasoned it twice.. Desert was "meh".. all for the price of 38€ per menu (excluding drinks). There is no atmosphere, unless you consider a train station as ambience.. people walking back and forth.. dogs, noise.. smoke.. Sadly, I will not be returning but I do hope that the restaurant takes these comments onboard.

Terrible ..

the food was extremely disappointing . start from appetizer- we ordered deep fried herrings bruschetta which was very average, herring was a bit too fishy , without the crunchiness. Then pastas we had Risotto al nero di Seppia( Black cuttlefish risotto ) which was beyond terrible to be honest. It was bitter , a bit watery and tasteless, we could fish out three small pieces of cuttlefish. We also had Cavatelli alla Norma ( pasta with deep fried aubergine/ eggplant ) which was ok. disaster comes to side dish - Patate Arrosto (deep fried potatoes) it was so dry and overcooked and oily . Tasted like the potato was pre-cooked and been sitting in the heated canteen pan for 100years. So dryyyyyy …It’s kind of impossible to cook the deep fried potato this bad… (Maybe chef was not in a good mood) We were so looking forward to add desserts at the end with another one or two wines, but after all the terrible dishes we had , we couldn’t wait to settle our bill and leave. One thing I’d like to mention is the service was really good. The waitress who looked after our table was nice and attentive .

Me and my family visited Locanda Scappi this summer. We were a group of seven persons, and although the restaurant was almost fully booked, they managed to arrange a table for us in only 10 minutes. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the food and service was great! When we left, I unfortunately forgot my readingglasses, but didn't notice until I was back in Sweden again... :-( I contacted Locanda Scappi and they had found the glasses and were very helpful and sent them to me!!!

Big disappointment.

Food was big disappointment! Even their signature dish was very basic, not mind blowing or even excellent. We were party of six and none of us were happy with our meals, which was not even close to real Italian food experience. We had one person with allergies, waitress acknowledged it, but in the end forgot it and the meal had to be prepared again. The service was slow, our waitress did not speak any Finnish and was not really polite. I simply cannot recommend this is you are looking for real Italian food experience.

Really worth of visit

First we weren't really impressed about the boxy interior of the restaurant, but soon noticed that there was no echo at all and the dinner experience was pleasant. Warning to avoid disappontments: There is no pizza on the menu. The service was excellent! You could feel that the friendly crew was experienced. The food was a good four star quality. Both beef and tuna tartars fresh, seafood pasta and sausage risotto were excellent as well as homebaked foccacia. At least sausages and pastas are their own products. We'll go back.

Waste of money and disappointment

The interior of the restaurant is very mediocre, we took pasta from cheese wheel (17 euros) with extra truffle for 5 euros per 1 gram as you can see from the picture that I took. Pasta was ok, nothing special at all but this 1 gram truffle on the top is a joke, it doesn’t give any smell or taste, I’m sure it’s possible to put more truffle and not for extra price because now it’s season and the truffle is not that expensive. The only advantage of the restaurant is friendly staff but I wouldn’t recommend this place for visiting.

Okay but no better than that

We came with high expectations since there has been a hype about this place in social media. Unfortunately we were quite dissapointed. Most of us started with Vitello Tonato which was really badly oversalted. We all said the same comment about that dish. Moving on to the pasta - tagliatelle con scampi lacked flavour and was very bland. Also for the price (26€) would have expected more scampi, the amount was quite ridiculous (there was hardly any). Crema Bruciata was great. Service was okay, but lacked charisma so to say. What I mean with this is that they were okay and polite but no more than that - no smiles, no passion, nothing extra what great service is all about. On average the place is okay but not so that we would return.

Only pasta good?

Stopped in for an early dinner. Vitello tonnato was good, but tartare de manzo was absolutely tasteless, unless plain raw mince is your thing. Not even a hint of any spices, nor salt. Octopus (polpa e ceci) tough, not tenderised enough. More under than slow cooked. Served with "all dente" chick peas. That could upset somebody's stomach. Fresh and big and nice mussels! The frozen-thawn langostinos only worsened the dish, why have them? The sauce was very good: olives and tomato. we duely complained about these things and some dicount was given on main courses. The waiter suggeested we try pasta nesxt tim because it´s good. There hardly will be next time. Desserts: Zuppa inglese was good, but was there any real mascarpone in tiramusu? taste3d more like vegetable based white cake topping/ filling if you know what I mean. Nice esprossos. Service was just fine and got tipped too (even if this is Finland) The wines were directly from ALKO the stae monopol store with some Finland) The wines were directly from ALKO the state monopoly store with some +200% profit margin. No Sommelier or own import from Italy? In Katjanokka there is very little non-fine dining options so they can thrive?

Late lunch. The food was magnificent. There are many wannabe Italian places out there but also authentic ones. This one is the latter : One can really taste chef's passion for good cooking. The service minded waiters managed everything even though the place was 70% full capacity. A definite return to this place! Thank-you for surprising us.
