Excellent cuisine and very genuine and friendly staff

The restaurant is quite small but very neat and peaceful decorated with light Nordic colours and wood. However was their quite noisy during our visit, the restaurant was fully booked and there was also a larger party with laughter and loud talking, why it sometimes was hard to strike up a conversation. The menu offers variety but without too many options and of course is there a Nordic feeling with ingredients like potatoes, lingonberries, cauliflower and reindeer. The service is very good and always with a smile. The waitresses talks passionate about the food and drinks also giving their suggestions and they feel very genuine and true. This is a place I would love to return to next time I visit Helsinki and I strongly recommend everyone to enjoy dinner here.

Best meal in Helsinki

We were looking for somewhere to eat dinner and thought we would try this restaurant. We were all very impressed - starters were the crayfish soup and green salad, both were very enjoyable, main course of reindeer- melt in your mouth and there was a fine balance with the vegetables, fish of the day - salmon which was also delicious. The suggested Cote de Rhone red was very complimentary and smooth to the palate. Dessert wine, also recommended, was a fine finish to a superb meal. This restaurant has been family owned for 33 years and that’s a testament to the quality of food and service. They also were supportive of one dîner needing to have gluten free options. We will definitely return. Many thanks.

Kitchen and service at a very high level!

A quiet summer evening in the center of Helsinki. We went out with a few friends and were recommended Restaurant Karljohan at the hotel. It was good! As a starter, a very delicious fresh green salad for some and an exquisitely delicious scallop dish for others. The main course was reindeer fillet for the 3 of us, and I have never had a better reideer fillet in my life. The fourth chose the dish of the day, a moose stew on mashed potatoes, also top notch. The wine advice was excellent, and you had the clear impression that both waiters and wine waiters were having a good time looking after the customers - it was simply nice to be around. It's not a very cheap place, but you really get what you pay for. Recommended!

Very very good!

Hello, it's been a while. Sorry about it. Yesterday we were eating in Restaurant Karljohan in our lovely hometown Helsinki city. We had a 5 course special dinner, and what a dinner. First we got vitello tonnato, witch is one of my all time favourites. An it was made to perfection. After that we had fried scallops with cauliflower pyre. Scallops melt in our mouths. And the pyre was like a cloud. Wow. Then come vorschmack, whits is a traditional meat dish. Actually it is from russia, but it was our marshal Mannerheis favourite and it's become like ours. It was the dish of the day. Excellent. It had been 3 days in the owen. That tells something. Before dessert we got cod witch had cooked just right. The flakes were there, just enough salt and vegetable kind of sauce tasty. Dessert was a dark chocklad bar and strawberry with basil - mascarpone quenell was surprisingly good. Okay, that's it! An all this was only 60 euros per person. Special thanks to the staff, professional, funny and friendly. We loved evert bit of it!

A gastronomical experience you don’t want to miss

They quality of the food and service was excellent. We had the reindeer, which was so tender and the accompanying sauce paired well. The shrimp scampi appetizer was scrumptious - perfectly cooked. The chocolate mousse dessert was a darker chocolate than most, giving it a deeper flavor profile. I went back a second night and had the duck which was excellent too. It is not a big place so reservations are definitely suggested.

Fantastic Lunch

I stumbled upon this place running errands and am lucky that I did. I only have had lunch there, but have been back twice. They have a nice salad with bread to start (self-serve), and a choice of several ala carte items. The service is awesome and the food comes quickly - which is nice at lunch.

Nice steakhouse

Nice steakhouse in Helsinki centre (just opposite the market buliding). Great stakes and burgers, not so good side dishes (soups etc). The place seemed to me a bit expensive, but this goes for the rest of Helsinki as well.

One of the best meals we had on our trip to Helsinki and Stockholm. For appetizers we had the shrimp and vorschmack. Both were great. For main courses we had the fried pike perch and fish cake - also both excellent. Great value for the meal as well.

The best!

Everything from the first minute was perfect. There was no possibilities to reserve the table online, so we called on the phone. The table was ready for us. Stuff, food, drinks-it is something. Starters-OMG. Main courses OMG x2. Thank you guys! We will come back the next time we are in Helsinki!

Cozy ravintola with great food and service

KJ is minutes from the Central rail station, but quaint and cozy in an alley. The staff gave us personal attention despite a large Swedish event there at the time. The scallops were a real treat and great fish too. The food is worth a trip to Helsinki!

We ended up here by chance. Small, very fine restaurant. Very personal, good advice, great regional cuisine, good portions. Very nice personal service. Good wine, we liked it a lot and can only recommend it. Overall rating: very good, recommended!!

Fantastic spot, a must-visit

This restaurant was so good, I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch and came straight back for lunch the very next day (and was warmly greeted by the same waiter). The food here is simply excellent -- fresh, well-executed and presented, full of flavour. You begin with a self-serve salad and bread, a perfect way to get started while you wait the short time this efficient kitchen takes to make your fresh lunch. The schnitzel I had on my first visit was wonderful, perfectly in tune with the lingonberries, capers, and herring garnish, and served on a silky hill of mashed potatoes. On day 2 I had a wonderful beef stew, so rich in flavour it was hard to restrain oneself from mopping up every drop of sauce with bread. The dishes were expertly paired with delicious wines. Service is warm and friendly. This is on my must-visit list for my next trip to Helsinki.
