Excellent New Years Eve Dinner & Amazing Customer Service!!

I had a fantastic dinner here with my girlfriend and sisters for New Years. We all enjoyed the four course menu, particularly the grilled angus sirloin which was delicious! The staff were very friendly and attentive, and provided us with great wine recommendations. It was also a great atmosphere in the restaurant for New Years with lots of other groups celebrating. A week after visiting the restaurant I realised that I had stupidly left my jumper at the restaurant. On enquiring with the restaurant, Ulla provided fantastic customer service by quickly confirming they had found my jumper and that they would be more than happy to post it to me in London. While I offered to pay for the postage, the restaurant team was kind enough to cover this themselves! I can't thank Ulla and the restaurant team enough for their fantastic customer service! Based on both the great food and amazing customer service, I would highly recommend a meal at Shelter. We will all be back next time we are in Helsinki.

Very nice plate to eat

Very nice restaurant at the corner of the harbor. If you sit at the window you have a great view. Restaurant is modern. Staff very friendly and seats are great. Dinner menu is limited with 3 starters, mains and desserts. And then a chef’s surprise menu. Food looks great and tastes even better. Portions are not that big but eating them is quite a flavorful experience. For 2 entrees, 2 mains and 2 wines we paid 115 euro.

We had a dinner here with family and friends. The tasting menu was interesting and we decided to try that. Unfortunately some persons in our group had limitations (no fish, no shellfish) so it turned out to be mostly rice dishes and root vegetables. Anyway, it was okay and the prices were reasonable.

The food is okay but it takes forever before you get it. We ordered a 5 meal menu and it took about 30-40 minutes between every meal. Considering that the meals are small, it is very frustrating to wait more than half hour for a portion. I will not go back there.

An early dinner on Saturday evening with a friend. Octobus was surprisingly hot and spicy, but perfectly prepared. I’ve not had this good pasta in a long time as my pasta with tiger prawns. White wine with the main course was a little bit too warm, even if a waitress mentioned that it had been stored in a cooler. The same comment regarding my friend’s glass of champagne - a bit too warm. Her white fish was also excellent. Personnel knows how to make cocktails! !

5 course Tasting menu is the way to go

We were only in Helsinki for two nights so I searched out two tasting menus. Shelter was our first night and the food was excellent. We did the five course tasting menu and the 5 wines pairing....the price was amazing and each dish was presented well and the quality was top notch. My favorie was the Beef tartar with truffle mayonnaise, pickled shitake mushrooms & parmesan....I mean come on. the restaurant is trendy with leaning towards an industrial interior and the staff was also great. Lovely way to spend an evening.

Disappointed at Shelter

My wife and I had several lovely meals during our few days in Helsinki. Our meal at Shelter was the single notable disappointment. The restaurant is in a nice waterfront location and has a hip “please look at me” feel — but as for fine dining it fell short. We had the 4 course tasting menu. The beef tartare was OK but nothing special as was the tomato carpaccio — just meh. The arctic char entree was actually very good and the only reason I’m giving 3 stars (and not fewer). The service is the biggest reason to avoid Shelter. We were simply forgotten for long periods of time. The few times we did see our server she seemed to be hawking dishes and drinks that we did not want. Avoid Shelter — there are many good dining options in Helsinki from market food to fancy.

Great quality & relaxed atmosphere

I visited Shelter with a group of friends on a Saturday evening. We all ordered Menu Shelter which is a four course menu and then a wine package to go with it. We were very satisfied with the food and the wines were all well chosen and matched to the dishes nicely. The staff was friendly and explained us the dishes and wines well. The atmosphere was very nice! The restaurant is stylish yet relaxed in a good way. It felt like a quality restaurant without feeling too fancy for a quite casual Saturday night. All things considered, dining at Shelter was a great experience. We felt very welcome and enjoyed the food and wines. I'm sure we will visit again someday!

My husband and I dined here during our 2 night stay in Helsinki and we were really impressed! We opted for the 3 course chef’s surprise menu upon the waiter’s recommendation (with one of us being no seafood). The food was delicious and the serving sizes were perfect for us. The wait staff were outstanding - when the food came out, one of the waiters put the seafood dish in front of the wrong person and when the other waiter realized they were extremely apologetic and generous in offering to take our drinks off the bill at the end. This was very unexpected but enormously appreciated! The vibe and location of the restaurant is really cool too. I would definitely recommend Shelter Restaurant!

Upon arrival-15 minutes before our reservation, we were told they couldn’t seat us because our table wasn’t ready. All tables were set, there were few diners, and several waitstaff standing around in the back. We were told to wait outside where you could get a drink. Luckily found the last seat outside and it was self-service from a bar with a line of people not necessarily going to the restaurant. Not what we expected. We were seated fairly shortly but it left a bad taste. The meal was great as was the service once we were seated and we enjoyed a wonderful Bulgarian wine imported by the restaurant. So mixed feelings-not sure if I’d return.

The setting is nice. Aperitifs are expensive, the “Naked Colada” cocktail is tasteless, dishes are expensive, minimalist but... good. On the other hand, the music of the bar next door is far too present. By the way, if you want bread with your dish, you will have to add another 5€ for two people!!! We are in Finland and it is the capital🤷🏻‍♂️

This was our first visit to Helsinki, we came on a winter mini break and we enjoyed a visit to Shelter which is located by the water and must be lovely to sit outside on sunny summer evening but was warm and cosy on this particular windy Saturday at the very end of November. It can be difficult to try and choose somewhere special for a meal remotely relying on the reviews of others, however, we were lucky and Shelter was a lovely experience. We were made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived and were looked after by friendly and attentive staff (specifically Jasmin but also others). They advised us about dishes on the menus and explained each dish to us as it arrived in impeccable English! They were knowledgeable about the wine and helped us choose three, all of which were excellent and went well with the food we chose. We ate from the al carte menu and everything was delicious, highlights including the tartare beef, butter nut squash and beef cheeks and also the bread pudding we shared for desert.

This is an upscale restaurant with a very limited menu and it is expensive. All of that is fine. But for that I expect good service, my meal to be correct and prepared well. The food was delicious but they brought the wrong dish to one member of our party, the were also a bit arrogant.

Nice place by the harbor. The menu consists of a fixed 3 to 5 course menu with wine packages or a la carte. After a bit of back and forth, we ended up choosing a three-course a la carte menu. We found that the waiter seemed a bit reserved and cautious. The wine was not opened at the table, something we do not often experience when ordering whole bottles. Beyond that, the service was pleasant, good and fast. We found the food to be very good. In a class of its own.
