If you'd like to go somewhere nice in Helsinki, perhaps even romantic, and taste some Finnish food with a twist this is the place. The restaurant is very close to the center and the staff is very responsive if you have any questions about your reservation. Yes, you do need to reserve! The atmosphere is very nice and relaxing, the service is impeccable, they have a great wine list or even suggested wine pairing course with your preset dinner. If you go for dinner you'd need to select either 5 or 8 course dinner (we settled for 5), each course is small but you also get a small samplers from a chief and their special bread. Bread was super delicious and I wish I could take it with me and eat every day, of course gaining a dozen pounds in return :-) The set is fixed but could be adjusted if you don't eat fish or meat, even specific meat. We were party of 5 and ended up getting 3 fish and 2 meat main dishes and they both were excellent! Besides the set itself, you could also get extra cheese set if you'd like. So I'd highly recommend the place for a special occasion, just prepare to spend about $150 euros per person. Note, there us also another restaurant next door literally, called Finnjavel Sali and it looks more casual so could be another option to explore.

I had the good fortune to be in Helsinki recently for work and met up with a friend who recently relocated here from Dublin. Wanting a nice restaurant, serving good Finnish fish, it was an easy choice to pick here. We arrived early for our Wednesday evening booking and were greeted warmly. Being told that the shops were still open, and there was no hurry with our table, we popped to the nearby shops, where I managed to buy a great rain jacket, helped by a very pleasant assistant. Anyway, to the meal! We were served by excellent and friendly staff who went out of their way to explain the menu and advise on wines. We both opted for the new set 4-course menu and were so pleased. Supremely confident cooking with outstanding ingredients. Everything was super delicious and we will certainly remember our evening with fond memories. Keep up the great work!

Ate on Sali side - took their menu with drinks pairing and added couple things to it myself. My favorites were smoked whitefish with mushrooms, ”toripiirakka” from terrace menu - which is traditional Finnish meat pie with tartar inside and the rhubarb pie with ice cream. Service was really attentive and friendly as well and paired wines and drinks matched well to the courses.

525 euro for two people is just way too much. The 5 course menu and wine package was good, but doesn’t match the outrageous pricing. The waiter even tried to up sell some caviar, venison and cheese to the menu for an additional 120 euros in total, more than doubling the menu price. For two persons that would have been then in total 760 euros. Never again!

This was my third time in Finnjävel and the food has been consistently good. Because I'm already familiar with the concept (traditional Finnish food with a modern fine-dining twist) the wow-factor isn't there anymore but obviously that's not a shortcoming of the restaurant. The dishes are beautiful and tasty. Service is fast, sharp and friendly. The Salonki venue is quite small – something I consider a plus – so it's easy to get the server's attention and it's not too noisy.

The restaurant is unpretentious in design with imaginative ceiling cover that reduces ambient noise. Set menu offers little choice of fish or meat but the quality of the small portions shows imagination , great attention to detail and first class service resulting in a truly memorable meal. Would like to return just for more dishes with wild mushrooms.Congratulations to the chef . Only disappointment is the limited wine list at prices that could be difficult to justify for visitors from most countries.

Finnjavel Salonki is an unforgettable experience, paricularly for finns who have memories of typical dishes eaten in 1960’s and 70’s. Finnjavel is serving them again, but naturally as a modernized gourmet version. Their 5 or 8 course menu can be recommended to anyone, who wants to understand the development of the finnish cuisine over the last decades. The Salonki, or Drawing room, part of Finnjavel is a top level gourmet restaurant with stylish decoration to the last detail and designed to support the menu story, which is a thought through entirety. All dishes and kitchen greetings are tasty and imaginative and supported with well selected wines. Also the personnel is ready and able to tell stories and background of the dishes, which makes the dinner a real learning experience. Truly recommendable.

This restaurant is located in the same building as the Taidehalli art museum. During our museum visit, we had just refreshingly cold beers here. The interior with hanging rag rugs from the ceiling offered visually more than most artworks in the museum. The food offered here is typical Finnish food with a twist to create a fine dining experience.

The concept is nice: bringing alive traditional Finnish food but with a ultimate modern twist. Service is friendly and professional. Two sets of wine pairings available. Plenty of space between tables, which is great during these COVID-times. They charge extra for bread, which is a bit odd in a restaurant of this level. All dishes were tasty and good wine matches.

Dined in Finnjävel Sali, which is said to be the cosier side. More simple and more affordable food. Service was bad. Friendliness and attention that one would expect in this price range restaurant were missing. The place and the foods were not properly introduced. We were not greeted at all when we arrived! Had to find the cloakroom and our table ourselves. Prices on the high side. Menu price was ok, no problem with that. But i did not expect to pay 5 eur per person for tap water, and >20 eur (total) for some pieces of bread. Were not informed beforehand that one needs to pay separately for the bread - the waiter casually asked if we wanted some like it was included. Sparkling wine was probably the most expensive I’ve had in Helsinki! Food itself was good, no problem with that. But i will not go again.

Not a service you expect from a restaurant like this. Average food, very disappointing service if you do not order better wine package or anything else (outside the tasting menu). Constantly pushed purchasing of "extra bread plate" and far too expensive sparkling water "offered" as a complimentary service. Would not go again, would not recommend. A bit disappointing experience, considering it was a celebration of my partners birthday and it has ended with a sad aftertaste.

Visited the restaurant as solo and had the four course menu together with the superior wine menu. Starter was excellent especially the curry marinated herrings and the potatoes. Second starter was the restaurant touch on the famous Janssons fristelser, apparently hated by the Finnish. Well….absolutely nothing to hate on this touch. Main course was smoked trout….smoked by the order, it was absolutely fantastic (wherefore the 5 stars given). Crisp skin and a sense full taste of fresh freshly smoked fish. Dessert was lovely as well, white filled chocolate with ice-cream. To end this excellent course, I ordered filter coffee with a (two) Finnish brandy, the waiter had no reason to be humble about about the brandy. Best coffee I had during one month business trip in Europe. Paid total 179 EUR, which is very reasonable and can recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit again if I have the opportunity.

Had a Friday evening dinner in Finnjavel. Menu with four different meals was excellent. Taste of Finnish raw materials such as meat, fish and mushrooms were pure and nicely fitted according to current season in fall 2020.

Of course I wouldn’t go here for dinner every night because it’s a treat, a place if you have something to celebrate. The food (five course menu) is excellent and local ingredients based. I thought the wine list was imaginative with a choice of very good wines reasonably priced. The sommelier was knowledgeable and knew exactly what to recommend. The service wasn't intrusive, so we could relax and enjoy the evening. Overall there was a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere.

We organized a board meeting at the private room in Salonki. The room was nice and quite adequate! The fixed 5-course tasting dinner was a winning success and very enjoyable. Our 'Raw salted deer' and the 'Potato gruel' were clear successes. The 'Pike perch à la Mannerheim' was, to me, the weakest component; very faint, mushy. Then, 'Mallard à la Suvorov' and the 'Tarragon carrot' were excellent. Our 'better' wine-pairing package proved quite interesting, with some very unexpected and unusual varietals. Service, after some unexpected, surprising initial friction, was excellent. Our waitress Hanna was very responsive and kind, learning her trade in a superbly promising way. A valued experience, to be repeated.
