We took the fried vendace with sampo which are small local fish that are eaten completely (the tail also so) This is dish number 8 on the menu in Finnish Attentive service The portions are large enough feel free to take a dish for two to start The restaurants is typical, local and in its juice

Local Finnish Restaurant with good food and atmosphere

Restaurant that mostly has local dishes based on the the fish vendace prepared in different ways. Vendace is a small local fish from the lake. If you have not tried it- pls do! The food is genuine and very good. I had one of the vendace dishes in a sour cream sauce. As dessert I choose pancakes- these you could die for! Fried in real butter served with jam ans whipped cream. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and "cozy", you feel very much like at home. The service is very good- they can describe all the dishes on the menue and they keep an eye on you and they are there when you need them.

Something for even those who don't like Muikku

The restaurant offers a variety of Muikku dishes, but also options without Muikku. The dishes are simple, but tasty. Even desserts can be recommended. The menu is available in Savo dilect and in English, our children thought it was easier to understand the English version. :) The restaurant's ventiolation doesn't work properly, the whole place is filled with frying smoke. Prepare to wash everything you're wearing after a visit. The smoke is the only reason I wouldn't go again.

We visited this restaurant due to our business trip (tables booked for a group for around 25 people in advance, everyone ordered from the menu and paid their own food and drinks). The menu itself is interesting (language wise, local dialect, a bit difficult to be understood by people from other regions from Finland). This restaurant is specialized in MUIKKU, so be prepared to eat it, smell it all around (even your clothes the next day...) The restaurant is located in the city center by walking distance. Since we visited this restaurant as a group (booked in advance) we had not much choice. Me and my colleagues were wondering what can we eat there... since some of us were vegan and some of us really just don´t eat this type of fish. However, we found a vegan dish (by asking to modify some dish from the menu), and for the non-vegan a sausage dish and a vegetarian dish - however, even if it was written in the menu, the vegetarian dish included a very salty MUIKKU on top of everything. You should go to this restaurant if you like MUIKKU. What ever they have apart of that is basically just chopped tomatoes or sliced cucumbers, some mashed potatoes. Those I can easily do at home, and add salt and pepper, too. Our table also had a local beer suggested by the waiter (I didn´t taste it) and a small glass of wine. My veggie plate and a 16cl red wine was around 26e. I had it, I paid my bill, but was not something special - not to be returned. The more special and remarkable apart of the food in this place was the blond dialect speaking wonderfull waitress telling jokes, explaining history... and taking the local dialect with a lots of humour.

We made a reservation at the restaurant over a month prior to our visit and we were truly looking forward to it as a central part of our mini vacation in Kuopio. Not everything went as planned due to the waitress being rude. Her impoliteness made me burst out in tears. The older and dark haired waitress was like a black hole, sucking in all the postive energy, leaving the atmosphere negative. Moreover, I’m a beer enthusiast and the waitress made me feel like an idiot for requesting good quality beer. On top of that, I felt like she was questioning my ability to finance the meal. I didn’t deserve to be treated the way I was as I was only being sincere and excited to be there.

I was recommended this restaurant by my Finnish friends how said it is the best place to try original local food and they were right. This place sells the local speciality of Vendance, a small fish that you eat whole as it is (no head and entrails but all the rest). It tastes good and it is a fun cultural experience, but I think I'm happy with one visit here. But it is a fast way to fill your stomach for a cheap buck.

Presented by the corner hotel as the best restaurant in Kuopio, similar to our quality trattoria for local cuisine, kindness, family run, all authentic. Finnish setting, retro ', full of good memories and rich vintages with moneyed customers. You can enjoy it for just a pint and a chat. You enter in rustic clothes. You go out satisfied. Food, the usual herring both fried and grilled with fresh boiled vegetables and mashed potatoes. Good sweet meringue with cream.

Interesting place with a long history. Decoration is of a period well passed. It honestly looking a bit worn and not in a good way. Price wise it’s ok neither cheap or expensive. Service is polite but the wait for the food to arrive was unacceptable around 50mins. This is too long even if it’s an iconic restaurant. Muikku portion is satisfactory. I would say the mash potatoes are the highlight of the dish. The side salad is lacking. Overall save your money and eat Muikku in the main square …

Ok vendace, service could improve

Traditional place to have vendace. Big portions. I have an impression that the quality varies from day to day. We have had good vendace here before and also now the portions was ok, but not exceptional. Also it took almost one hour to get the portions, so there was most probably some challenge in the kitchen. We also wanted to order desert, but because the restaurant was closing one hour later, we were not allowed to order desert. You can get similar vendace elsewhere, so to keep up to the reputation the restaurant needs to improve.

Not funny to see full tables and service colllapsing. Really hope it was just one time broblem but waiting one hour for simple snack food (muikku) and what Peoples when the kitchen can not provide good on time. We walk Off after an hour and the only excuse was that they had in so many People it was 50% full so I had to ask why they have so many tables. Fiid good value and Finland 5 stats service and waiting Timo zero 0

The oldest vendace restaurant in Finland

This restaurant is iconic. It was opened in the same house in 1931. The style of the restaurant is old-fashioned but food is delicious. They are a fish restaurant and they specialize in vendace (European cisco) food. Both vendace soup and shoemaker's stew were extremely delicious. Shoemaker's stew included mashed potatoes, vendace, bacon, onion, tomato, cucumber, lemon and dill. A table reservation could be a good idea here. The restaurant was almost full.

Very nice service and atmosphere. Staff speaks very nicely Savo language. And muikut are very good. Beer is fresh and cold. Lovely decoration and inspiring paintings and kind of Sea atmosphere. Location good near Kallavesi.
